Please recommend your favorite 7 passenger vehicle

I'm in the market for a used 7 seater vehicle. I'm trying to avoid a minivan because, well, it's a minivan, but worst case scenario i will settle for a minivan. The model i have my eye on is a Mercedes R350. Unfortunately for me they have been discontinued so finding a decent used one with relatively low miles at a decent price point $20k or below is proving quite hard in the Seattle area. As such i'm open to any other recommendations. Please tell me why you like your 7 seater or suggest to me any other options to ferry around 3 kids and an occasional straggler or 2. Thanks

Aggressive Sales Tactic, or Understandable Common Practice?

I am shopping for a used car, and I found one which passed most of the points in my initial inspection. When I proposed meeting the owner and the car at a mechanic for a complete pre-purchase inspection--for which I offered to pay--the owner said he'd only agree to the inspection if I gave him a $500 deposit. The deposit would be non-refundable if the car passed the mechanic's pre-purchase inspection. [more inside]

How can I get the best price for my clunker?

It's finally time for me to part ways with my 16-year-old car. I've picked out a new car, and had my existing car appraised for a trade-in. Unfortunately, the dealer's appraisal came in way lower than the Blue Book value, allegedly because of two warning lights (ABS and Airbag) that would affect the car's ability to be sold legally in Virginia. Is it worth investigating other options for selling my clunker, or should I just take the dealer's offer? [Details inside] [more inside]

Mazda & Honda owners – what annoys you about your car?

Mefites! I asked for used car recommendations a few months ago and got many helpful answers. Since then, I've narrowed down my list to either a Honda Accord, a Honda Civic, a Mazda3 or a Mazda6 - and now I want to know what is annoying about those cars. Help me double-check that all my car-buying-ducks are in a row?

Sweetie and I are in the market for a used car in California. We found, via a used car display agency, a car that we both like. Difficulty level: Private seller, plates and registration from South Carolina. Can you help us figure out what our fees will be and how they might differ if the car were registered in California? Need to buy new (to me) car. Budget is $6,000 cash. Advice?

I know very little about cars. But now I find myself needing to buy a car to replace my decrepit 1999 Chevy Prizm. I can pay cash up to a maximum of $6,000 (including all surcharges, taxes, etc.). I'd rather not get financing, as we're still paying-off my wife's car. [more inside]

Is certification "really" extra?? Used car price negotiations..

Found a car I like that is listed, as a certified vehicle, with a certain price on the dealer website. New Old Car filter

I'm shopping for a used SUV. It's harder than I thought because I have specific requirements, essentially that it be exactly the same as the SUV I've driven for the last several years, which is a 1996 Ford Explorer XLT. I love it, but it's reached it's retirement. [more inside]

Buying a used European car for $5k or less after a car-less decade: y/n?

Used car filter: after a decade without owning a car, I'd like to get back into the game. I'd prefer to spend $5k or less. I understand this means older cars/higher miles. I find myself drawn to early 2000s VW Golfs/GTIs, late-90s BMW 300 series, '90s Saabs, early '00s Volvos. Are any of these types going to be substantially more reliable or cheaper to maintain than others? [more inside]

Buying a used car in California, then moving to Minnesota

Separate from an independent inspection, what to do/look for in used car

Our car saga continues (1, 2). We took some test drives over the weekend, and it's likely we'll make some moves in the near future to buy an Outback or Forester. Any tips for getting a used Outback in Massachusetts?

Our mechanic has fixed our car from last week's question, but now I think we'll probably just get another used car. The Boston winters have convinced us we'd like something with good handling in ice and snow. We're not really SUV people. Because of their reputation for reliability (and ubiquity in the region), we're leaning towards a used Outback. Is a 2001 VW Turbodiesel a Bad Idea?

I might have a chance to buy one from a friend. It only has 120k on it, one owner, who has put a lot of work into and has a good maintenance history (and a reliable local mechanic who has done a lot of the work that she recommends). I need a car mostly for commuting, don't want to spend a lot of money, and in a few years, could afford to sell it and get something new. What is the best used car for the money?

I am buying my first car. I am thrifty so I'd like it to be used because I think I will find the best deal there; I just don't like the idea of spending all of that money for a rapidly depreciating asset and I'd rather buy it after it has already depreciated some. I am looking for one of two types of cars, either: 1) A sporty, but economical car (think Honda S2000, Mazda Miata) 2) A long lasting electric/hybrid (ie Nissan Leaf, Toyota Prius, Corolla, etc) Please let me know what your suggestions are, along with any caveats to buying a used car. I do not know much about cars. Should I bring a friend who does or hire a mechanic to inspect my car before purchase? Also, where is the best place to find a good deal? Thank you all.

What should I tell the customs agent about the $$ value of my car?

We will be importing a 2004 Honda Accord into Canada this weekend, I hope. We must pay taxes (16% of value of the car!) when we bring it in. It is up to us to put a value on the the car and hope the customs agent accepts our assessment.
