Exactly as it says above - can someone explain what makes some USB cables better than others? [more inside]
My cheap Dell laptop has finally lost both of its regular USB ports. (Sooner or later you jerk either the laptop or the mouse, and the little plastic rectangle snaps off where the USB plug connects to the laptop.) If I buy a USB-to-HDMI adapter, could I plug my mouse into my laptop's HDMI port? Or if I go to a repair shop, will they be able to fix the USB ports?
Does an A-A USB serial adapter cable exist? I know I could get two A-DB9 USB serial adapter cables and gang them together. But I want USB A-A. The objective is to run a serial terminal between two linux computers over USB.
What program should I use to burn my mp3 music files onto a USB drive and equalize them? If I simply copy the files off my computer, the volume is variable from one song to another, so I need to have the ability to equalize. I used to have Nero, but it doesn't function on my newer Windows 7 computer. [more inside]
I need a wired USB computer mouse that is reliable, doesn't use a ball (so optical / laser) and has a scroll wheel. Bonus points if the mouse is also stylish. I'm willing to spend up to $50—(probably) not any higher.
I'm putting together a digital file to give as a gift to several family members (think, digital scrapbook-type thing). If I were copying the file to a CD, I could make a nice case cover/label to go with it. But, if I'm putting the file on a USB drive, what could I do that would be similar? [more inside]
Fixing a computer for a church friend. I'd like to easily create a bootable usb stick from my other computers... windows and mac... but everything I've read makes it seem like a daunting process. Is there a utility out there to easily burn a rescue usb stick ? thanks.
I have a pair of active powered studio monitors with balanced inputs, and am looking for a USB DAC to drive them. [more inside]
I have a MacBook Pro. When I connect my iPod Shuffle or my GPS watch, they will charge but will not "show up" as a device in iTunes or my GPS watch program. [more inside]
I have, over time, acquired a handful of external USB hard drives. Terabytes full of stuff... The problem being, I don't really want to pay to have them on all the time, if I don't need them. It occurs to me it would be nice to have a simple, elegant way of having your computer keep an index, of sorts, of what you store on your external devices, even if those devices aren't powered up... and then having it either power the device up, or prompt you to do so, in order to access the files you need. Is there a Windows-friendly solution for something like this?
I have a computer with a headphone jack on the back. Is there a good way to plug in headphones from the front - USB or otherwise? [more inside]
I'm looking for a super lightweight MP3 player (and FM radio maybe?) with a long battery life to take on a long distance camping/hiking/cycling trip. [more inside]
I use Macs. I use a flash drive to carry powerpoint presentations and other documents that I need to access on PC's running various flavours of Windows, which are not mine and I will not have administrator access to. Is there a way that I can protect/encrypt the drive in a way that will let me use it on both systems, without having to pre-install software on the Windows system? I do not need government-grade encryption, just something that will stop casual snoopers accessing the data if I lose the drive.
After years of use, my wonderful Logitech laptop speaker has finally broken; one of the two speakers is making a loud fuzzing noise. I'd like to find a replacement, and welcome your suggestions! [more inside]
Can you suggest a reputable place to order bulk flash drives online? There seem to be lots of wholesalers online, but I'd rather pick one that isn't a scam. They need not be fancy and we don't even need a whole gig of memory, and I don't care if they're misprints, mismatched, or ugly so long as they work. We're trying to get the cheapest possible for student use in a middle school. I would need around 30 of them. (The students can't use an online file storage, nor can they burn CDs.)
I'm trying to set up several micro USB charging stations in my house and car, and I'm realizing that I retain very little from 9th-grade Intro To Electronics. Set me straight on how current works? [more inside]
I bought an Ethernet/USB adapter for my Dell laptop which doesn't have a USB port. Every few minutes the computer will make the "usb was disconnected sound", and then after about 3 seconds, it will think it's plugged back in. This causes a disconnect in my internet. Why does it do this? How can I fix it?
My wife's UP band quit working. When she called tech support, they told her that they had found that some of the devices would quit accepting a charge from the plug-in, and only accept a charge via the computer. She chuckled, but tried charging from the computer and it worked. Can anyone explain to me what's going on here?
My son is trying to record his voice along with his piano and he needs a microphone/usb setup to record his voice. He wants to sing covers of songs by Coldplay or Adele, if that helps. (this question is eight years old so it seemed like it was time to re-ask.)
I'm wondering if there exist any (portable) consumer electronics devices - so like music player, mouse, flashlight, audio recorder - that take any chemistry rechargeable AA or AAA batteries, and can recharge them right in the device. [more inside]
I have about 100 brand new very high quality USB drives (between 8gb and 256GB...most of them are the larger end). What can I do with them? I bought them thinking they were going to fail, and I was going to go through them. But I found out that high quality shit doesn't fail within 6 mos. [more inside]
I have a car with a factory stereo which has both an aux jack and a usb input, but no bluetooth. Is there a commercially available device which would connect to an android cell phone via bluetooth and the car stereo via the usb port? My objective is to use the car stereo as the phone speaker. I do not need to stream music from the phone to the stereo. I know there are aux jack devices, but they require periodic recharging. A usb device should be able to operate indefinitely off usb 5V power
Just got a new internal hard drive for my PC and would like to copy files from my netbook to my PC's new hard drive. [more inside]
I have an external Blu-Ray drive very similar to this one (I think it's the same, but I'm not 100% sure), and I'm trying to figure out what voltage it needs from an external power supply. [more inside]
I am thinking about putting in a new outlet with some built in USB chargers where I usually charge my devices. Is this a good idea? Also, I have heard there is a huge difference in quality in these things but I have no idea how to figure out what to get. Anybody have any advice?
I've got a Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini (GT-19195/ Android 4.2.2.) with a Samsung USB/power cable that until two days ago was able to connect with my laptop (Windows 7) over USB. Now however, after a firmware update, the computer no longer sees my phone nor does the phone see the computer. What's going on and how can I resolve it? [more inside]
Let's say I want to highlight a piece of text and hit a button and have it place the text in quotes (or within code) and tweet it, is that possible? I'm on the newer OSXs. Curious about using either a cheap USB numeric keypad or a cheap USB controller like the Korg NanoKEY2 Slim Line. Is this possible?
I need to buy a replacement charger for my bluetooth transmitter but I don't know how to google what I am looking for. Help! [more inside]
Today's world demands high security devices, like an aggressively self-destructing USB drive. I would like advice on the possibility of creating such a thing if one wouldn't mind offering wisdom. [more inside]
I am looking for an external, portable DVD drive that plugs into a TV (via USB would be most convenient) and functions like a standard DVD player, while also connecting to a laptop to play CDs/install software. I can only envisage using the drive to watch DVDs on my TV, rip CDs and install software, so the ability to write to disk is not important. [more inside]
I have a laptop (Toshiba A105 S4344) with a windows xp install and a bootable USB clip with Win7 on it. I want to put Windows 7 on the laptop. If I take the hard drive out then the USB clip boots fine (but has no hard drive to install windows on). If I put the hard drive in then it runs windows off the HD even though USB boot is ahead of it in the BIOS startup order (and when I put a blank hard drive in then it complained it couldn't find the windows startup files). And when I try and insert the HD after loading Win7 off the USB, the installer can't see the hard drive. I've checked the BIOS and there aren't any secure boot/UEFI shenanigans going on. I will probably end up burning the win7 install onto a dvd, but does anyone know why the Toshiba would be overriding the boot order?
I'm in need of a 4-port HDMI/USB KVM switch, and I'd much rather get a good one than a cheap one. Any recommendations? [more inside]
More and more cell phones opting for waterproof construction (yay!), and each of them seem to be doing their own thing as far as waterproof connections. Is there any movement afoot to standardize these things as they become more widespread? [more inside]
OK, this is odd: I recently bought (online) a little (portable/spare) USB Mouse (fitted with a spring-loaded, self-retracting cable-tidier). Fine. The mouse arrived today, along with a Yellow, Plasticised-wire (pipe-cleaner type thing), which has a cute duck face at the end of it, and a strange forked-tail. No other explanation. (Easter, perhaps?!), but I suspect it's some kind of mouse cradle to hang off a laptop... I don't get how this might be used, but wondered if anyone here could explain what it was / it's proper usage to me. Ta
The usb just stopped working on my Asus zenbook UX32VD laptop, running windows 8.1. Device manager shows no problems with usb (or any devices), and I have tried plugging in several different usb devices (my mouse, flash drives) to check. The built-in touchpad still works. Can anyone suggest how I might fix it, or what has happened? Thanks. [more inside]
I have a Casio Tonebank CT-670 keyboard. I bought a usb-midi cable. I've tried connecting the cable to pc. I get the red light power on for the cable. But can't get any lights to turn on for midi signaling. Is my midi cable broken, or is something wrong on the midi keyboard or pc end. I tried all possible setting available in Fruity Loops and still no sound coming through on pc end. When I push a key on the keyboard should the midi cable light up that a key has been pressed like in this video at the 3 min mark? It doesn't does this mean the cable is broken?

I have an old HP Pavillion (I think) laptop. It has two standard USB ports, and then two others that are almost the same size as USB ports, but not quite, and any USB items I plug in do not get recognized by the computer. Anyone have any clue what they might be?

my galaxy s3's usb charging port is loose with every cord I have, and only works in certain positions, (and charges slowly even then) so I'm looking into alternatives, including Qi charging or repairing the port. Advice needed. [more inside]

I used to have an iPhone. You could listen to music with it. You could plug it into my basic USB car stereo and it would play music. I now have a Google Nexus 4. It will play for about 30 minutes, and then stop. If I'm lucky, it might deign to play a few songs in the car. I must be doing something wrong, right? [more inside]
Has anyone ever tried one of the USB plug-in things sold as "soundcards"? Last night's lightning storm ate my motherboard sound ports and I have no alternative. [more inside]
My laptop has been having problems recognizing USB devices recently. Either it takes a really, really long time for the device to be recognized, or it's recognized nearly immediately but the device doesn't perform correctly. For example, I have a wireless bluetooth mouse that used to work, but currently the USB receiver is recognized (it makes the connection sound) but it doesn't read input from the mouse. I attach my phone, and either it's not recognized at all (despite making the connection sound) or it's recognized as a CD Drive instead of as a removable drive. No major changes to the system recently, aside from having the Norton subscription that was on here run out and replacing it with MSSE. The problems started before switching the AV software, however. It's a Win7 64 bit system. Other information available if needed.
16 gig capacity or higer would be nice. I don't care how it attaches to the keychain, just want one that won't break off in 2 weeks or 2 months. Sturdy it must be. What do you recommend?
My computer's rear panel USB ports periodically stop working -- even after replacing the motherboard. I'm at the limits of my diagnostic abilities here. Has anyone ever seen anything like this? [more inside]
