I am currently working in the USA on a J-1 "Cultural Exchange" visa. It expires early next year and my host organization, a non-profit, has expressed that they'll be happy to sponsor me on an H1B visa before then. My question is: would the terms of the H1B visa mean that I'd be tied down to working for this one organization for the duration? Or once awarded the visa would I then be able to search for a position at another organization? [more inside]

A friend from the Eastern European country I grew up in asked if I would sign and submit an invitation so she can get a tourist visa to the U.S., where I reside. She intends to look for illegal work when she gets here. My immediate reaction was "No way!" with a few expletives thrown in, but I don't want to hurt her feelings when I crush her hopes. My German-citizen best friend and I have been talking about him emigrating to the US for a few years now, and now that he's about to graduate from college, we're getting serious about it. So far, it looks like the best route is a graduate degree program, but money is a problem with that (namely, he doesn't have any). This doesn't have to be exclusively how he gets here, we're open to any suggestions. [more inside]

My mother has over 100 Indian saris in her closet that she would like to get rid of. She would really like to donate them to some organization that could make use of them. We live in the US, so just taking them to Goodwill wouldn't work. Are there any thrift stores or charity organizations in the US which cater to a South Asian community and/or would accept the saris? Would anyone even want them? [more inside]

With regards to psychotherapy, a common opinion I've noticed on MetaFilter is that Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy is perceived as being the most efficient way to go, in addition to being one of the very few therapies likely to be reimbursed by health insurance. However, this may be coming from a largely American perspective. As such, I'm curious: What are some major features of psychotherapy in countries other than the United States? [more inside]

I can't for the life of me find a picture of a particular road sign, which I consistently misunderstood as a child. It's a traffic sign in North America that I saw many times as a kid but almost never any more. It was a yellow-orange sign with a "no" symbol and some random-looking detritus behind it, which I later understood to be a crumpled can. Probably a "no littering" sign, but a search on that or like terms seems to turn up nothing! A pretty silly question, I know! I ask partly because when I was a kid, I thought the item behind the "no" sign was a mouser from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

I'm relocating to the US (from the UK) in a couple of weeks and having concerns about health insurance. My husband's employer covers health insurance for him, but to cover me as well we must take out the 'family policy' for $500 per month (if we had 4 kids this would be a great deal, but apparently it's the same price for the whole 'family' even if that's just me. This seems crazy to me, not sure if it is normal!). Is my alternative plan crazy? Health insurance companies confuse and scare me! [more inside]
