Educate me on these crime statistics

The Wikipedia page on statistics about rape shows a very high crime rate for countries like UK, US and Australia in stark contrast to, say, India. The gap can't be explained simply by under-reporting, as that exists in all these countries (even assuming different rates of under-reporting). Is it because these countries have different definitions of rape? Or something else? [more inside]

What are some specifically American foods (less perishable is better)?

I have a Hungarian friend with whom I exchange a large gift box every year at Christmas. She's moving to Australia to study this March, and so I want to send her a little extra care package when she moves, as I know it will be a hard relocation. In the past, I've sent her mostly non-edible goods (except for coconut M&Ms, which she loves, and Tabasco, sambal olec and Sriracha, as she hadn't tried them and we both love spicy foods). She has sent me a wealth of specifically Hungarian treats, including Erős Pista (a Hungarian spicy paste), poppy and nut cakes, Hungarian chocolates and jams, and even lozenges. I'd love to send her some typically American treats in my next box, but I can't think of what they might be! Thanks! [more inside]

Sitcom about a former hero and former villain living in suburbia together

Okay, so there was this show (maybe on the USA network?) around 1990-ish, maybe. The premise was that a former superspy/secret-agent/hero had retired to the suburbs, and his former archnemesis moves into the house next door. They're still kind of enemies, but in a Simpsons/Flanders "friendly" way, instead of trying to kill each other like they used to. What is this show? [more inside]

The ancient Chinese developed a pun-based system of message-coding...

A (white, American) friend's parents gave me a clock as a gift, which in China is really not done. This was clearly not malicious, so I'm not offended and my parents are getting over it, but I'm wondering whether there's any way to tell them not to give this particular gift to any other Chinese people they may know. The problem is that I don't know any way to broach the subject that wouldn't call attention to their faux pas, and it's entirely possible that they just don't know any other Chinese people, in which case I'd much rather avoid embarrassing them. Should I say anything, either to them or to my friend their son?

Suggest a road trip of around 10 hours from Orlando!

Can you suggest some amazing places for me to visit within a ~10 hour drive of Orlando, Florida? I will be leaving Orlando on September 1st and have to be back either in Orlando or in Atlanta, Georgia afternoon of 7th September for my flight back to London, England. Is it really more of a liability to pack my own boxes?

I'm looking for moving/shipping companies to send a couple of boxes of books & clothes from Australia to the USA (as I'm relocating). While requesting quotes, one company strongly suggested that I hire them to pack my things for me as apparently US Customs get suspicious if the boxes were packed by the individual mover (me, in this case) rather than by a professional. I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere else and the US Customs website hasn't addressed this. What's going on? [more inside]
