What does UPS Ground charge for a one-time pickup at my house if I don't have an account? And is it a per-pickup or per-package charge? I have wasted an hour trying to figure this out on their website, and their cost calculator isn't clear either. I seem to remember about 5 years ago pickups were free but you had to get on the next day's schedule.

A company was able to send us (domestic U.S.) a board game by something called "UPS Ground S.D.P." Black label, all handwritten, no billing details on the label, and a tracking number like "K58375718" which is absolutely untrackable on the ups.com website. What is this? How come almost everyone else (and myself) uses the large UPS shipping labels and 1Zxxxxx tracking numbers but they don't?

I have two UPS boxes (APC CS 500 and APC ES 500). Both have this issue: I have two machines plugged into it. I shut the power off. What's supposed to happen is that the UPS is supposed to power the boxes for X number of minutes on its battery, but what actually happens is both machines shut right down in that second when the thing(s) go(es) to battery. Any ideas why? Isn't that... wrong?

If I have a power cut when I'm not at my computer, my UPS will keep my computers running until Windows can close down automatically and gracefully. But how do I get my Maxtor network storage to shut down? The UPS interface allows windows to call software before it closes...what software do I call to close my drive down? Or is the drive safe if it has its power cut off?

Today the UPS guy dropped off some ground packages at my door. Problem is, they for the former occupant of the house, not me. I shouted after him that the packages weren't for me, but he couldn't be bothered to stop. (He HAD to have heard me.) I don't know how to contact the former occupant to tell her I have her packages, and I don't know the new address to tell UPS to send them to. I tried looking on the UPS webpage, and it isn't much help. They don't look like anything vital (a small package each from Target.com and Amazon). What should I do with these things? Hang on to them a few days and see if the former occupant comes knocking on the door? What if she never claims them?

When a person chooses to send a package via UPS or FedEx, and s/he chooses not to opt for the premium one- or two-day delivery, will the carrier hold the package (rather than delivering it) at the nearest hub for a day or two to spite the tightwad shipper? In other words, if they could deliver it faster than promised without incurring extra expense, do they still delay the parcel's delivery so the service isn't any faster than promised?
