How do I remove or retract songs by my band that were uploaded years ago and are now for sale from multiple outlets on the internet? We sound different now, for one, but more to the point, we're not seeing any revenue from this, but someone must be. [more inside]

Four years ago, Aaorn asked after "free software that will let me set up a document dropbox on my web server. Basically I want to upload files and then have them be available -- through a nice-looking interface -- to users of my choosing." TooManyGadgets recently posted a question that brought DropBox to my attention, and after littleme was kind enough to share a DropBox beta invite, I wanted to revisit the original question. Obviously, there are lots of free scripts that offer the ability to do server-based file-sharing, but which is the best (security + ease of use, with free preferred but not necessary)? [more inside]

There is a file that I want to upload somewhere so that an infinite number of people can download it for free and without having to first sign up/become a member of anything. There should be no download limit and no expiration date. The file in question is less than 1mb in size, and is completely legal.
Any suggestions?

Railsfilter: I need to write an addition to an already-existing Rails app to allow it to accept large files (and some trivial metadata) uploaded from a Processing (Java) client I've written. The Rails app already supports this behavior via a web interface. I can see a few of the trees, how do I fit them into the forest and get a pair of working apps? [more inside]

Webcam software for dialup. Is there a reliable program that can, every 15 minutes, open a dialup connection, FTP a pic, and hang up? We're trying to monitor a livestock pen at a rural property where there is no high speed. I have been trying Spycam but it won't go for more than 3 to 10 hours without generating a system error. I'm using a Logitech Quickcam Chat.

A client wants to enable fiile uploads via their web site. The web site is hosted outside the company and the files need to be uploaded to their FTP server which is hosted within or on-site at the company. Thus far all the components I've looked into upload to the web server. Is this simply the only option? Can anyone recommend a good component or alternate method? PHP, ASP are fine.

TechSupportFilter: When I upload (perfectly legal) bittorrent files at speeds greater than about 13 kbps, my Comcast internet connection gets completely swamped, and I'm unable to surf the web or download email. Comcast tech support has been out three times over the past month, and they're still scratching their heads. But I get the feeling they don't exactly know what they're doing. Does anyone have any idea what might be going on, or what further tests I should run to find out?

I have to set up a relatively simple photo sales site for a friend (as the only halfway tech person she knows). It doesn't need much - a basic basket/lightbox, accounts for customers and some relatively automated way for her to upload. Is there anything fairly off-the-shelf that will do this, or do I need to hack about with things like the opensource ecommerce project? Anyone know of good packages?

Those of you who have gotten way into Bit Torrent: have you found yourself wishing your internet connection had a fatter upstream pipe? According to this FAQ: "Sometimes, limiting your upload rate will increase your download rate ... If you are seeing very high upload rates and low download rates, this is probably the case. The reason this happens is due to the nature of TCP/IP -- every packet received must be acknowledged with a small outbound packet. If the outbound link is saturated with BitTorrent data, the latency of these TCP/IP ACKs will rise, causing poor efficiency." [MI]

I'm looking for some (free) software that will let me set up a "document dropbox" on my web server. Basically I want to upload files and then have them be available -- through a nice-looking interface -- to users of my choosing. Searching Google and Sourceforge hasn't found me anything useful yet, although bytehoard is about 25% of the way there.
