Catching Up on WPMU

I want to upgrade a WPMU (WordPress Multi-User) install from 1.3.3 (a year old) to 2.8.3 (the current release). Can I just upload and configure 2.8.3 and run the included upgrade.php script, or do I need to "step through" each release, upgrading each time (1.3.3 to 1.5.1, then 1.5.1 to 2.6, 2.6 to 2.7, and 2.7 to 2.8.2)? Quicker WordPress upgrades?

I'm trying to keep up with WordPress upgrades (2.0.2 just came out yesterday, and I was only halfway through upgrading 30 installs to 2.0.1!), but I swear there must be an easier way than the way I'm doing it. [more inside]
