My wee, sturdy iPhone 4 is reaching the end of its unnatural lifespan. I plan to get a new phone in January and cannot decide from these options: 5s, 6, and [unknown Android capable of seducing me]. Difficulty level: Canadian; have a decent month-to-month phone plan now and don't want to settle for less; smallish hands. [more inside]
I'm considering doing a major computer upgrade - CPU, mainboard, and video card. Is Windows going to completely shit the bed after I do this? [more inside]
My Mac is (and has been) prompting me to update software. Every time we get past the "Agree" or "disagree" prompt, the window tells me it can't be installed on "Macintosh HD." There is 300-some GB of space. Any ideas what's going on? [more inside]
FML. I upgraded my iphone STUPID ME and now it is stuck with a prompt that just says "iTunes." I don't have a computer available, and I have to meet people in a few hours ... phone is our only method of communication. PLEASE HALP
I want to spend less than $400 to buy a fully functional new desktop. Regardless of the CPU it would have, I want to be able to put in an i7 later on. I want to be able to add more RAM and a powerful video card without having to get a new case or power supply. HDD should be at least 1TB. It can start with 4GB of RAM, since I plan to upgrade. If it's 4GB i'd prefer it to be on a single stick. I would also prefer Windows 10 to be already installed.
I have an “early 2009” Mac Mini that I am nursing along. It’s not my main computer but I do use it enough to want to keep it running smoothly. Last year, without putting a lot of thought into it, I upgraded to Mavericks from Snow Leopard. I noticed a hit in speed even though the reviews I was reading after the fact said the opposite should happen. Whatever. So this past weekend, I thought it’d try it again with a clean install. [more inside]
In the past, every time I've upgraded Windows (3.11 to 95 to 97 to XP to 7) I've done a clean install. For the first time, I'm considering upgrading (to Windows 10) with an in-place (overwrite) installation, not a clean install. My Windows 7 has been acting badly lately, probably due to various registry cruft. Does an in-place install take care of that, or is all the registry cruft carried over, and should I do a clean install instead? (A clean install would involve many hours more work)
I’m thinking about finally making the switch to a Macbook, but an older version. Is there any reason why this is a bad idea? [more inside]
So I just made the decision to keep my old 2002 Subaru Outback rather than buy a new (to me) car. It's a great car and runs well, so I should be able to get another few years out of it. But it occurred to me that one thing that would significantly improve my enjoyment of the car is if I upgraded the audio system. Problem is, I don't even know what possibilities are out there. Can you look at my list of wants and tell me which are possible/what I should buy? [more inside]
I need to upgrade from Mac OS 10.7.5 to OS 8 to use a tool for work. Should I just go ahead and upgrade to OS 10.10.3? I ask because the 10.7.5 works just fine and I'm inclined to leave well enough alone unless as now when I need a later version for work. Is the upgrade (to whatever version) buggy, complicated, worth it? Thanks. [more inside]
What is the best way to upgrade my PC for the next few years? [more inside]
I am about to try and put a jellybean rom on a 2010 cellphone presently running android 1.6. An updated version of android isn't going to change the hardware though, so I need the lightest apps available. Or perhaps it's even better to not upgrade and there are markets with old versions of software or new software for old OS verisons? Join me inside please. [more inside]
It's time to upgrade our iPhones and I feel that I lack a PhD in rocket science or whatever is required to decipher AT&T's policies and get the best deal. Help? [more inside]
My vintage 2008 Macbook is eagerly gazing at the pasture that has been beckoning it for a few years now. I have replaced the hard-drive and maxed out the RAM, but the poor little guy is simply ready for a well-deserved rest. So - what's next for me and when? Macbook Pro? Air? iMac? iPad? Difficulty level: incorporating moderate music production, Netflix, general web use, somewhat limited funds, and massive over-thinking. [more inside]
I'd like to make this as easy as possible without getting any new software or apps. But, if I don't have any options, I would be willing to get apps/ software (I have a Mac). It's about 3 years of communication over txt. [more inside]

Way back in 2005, I wrote an essay in wiki form using MediaWiki 1.5.1 on my website's third-party server. I did not upgrade it, and consequently it got broken when the server upgraded to an more advanced version of... well, I'm not sure what broke it, but probably MySQL, or PHP, or something. It's no longer supported. The database with its content still exists. Is it possible to get it back? How would I go about doing so? [more inside]
I plugged my iPhone in to my computer and it says you need to upgrade your software. So the phone was updating to iOS 8.1.1 and it errored out. It says upgrading failed, you need to restore to factory setting and you will lose all the data. So I tried to upgrade again and it failed again. I took it to the geniuses at the apple store and they said there is no hope of recovering my data. Does the hive mind know of a way??
I have a 2006 Mac Pro 1.1 (specs below the fold) which I understand can't be upgraded to current OS versions without a CPU replacement. I'm not sure if I can replace the CPU, or if that would even be sufficient to upgrade to a current Mac OS. How hard would it be to change the CPU, and what is my best option if I can't / won't change it? [more inside]
First, this is not a gigantic deal. I have all my data backed up via CrashPlan, I do most of my computing on a MBP Retina that's about 6 months old, and I've hardly used the Mini at all in that time. My question is what I can best do with the doorstop my Mac Mini now is. [more inside]
I just got a new video card, the Gigabyte R9 270X. At 297mm it's too big for my current case! I would love suggestions on the best case to upgrade to. [more inside]
Normally I’d solve this by myself, but a severe bout of depression is making it impossible for me to think clearly. I’m so overwhelmed I’m barely keeping myself from bursting into tears at work. I’m basically asking AskMe to proofread my plan, point out vital information I’m missing, and let me know if there’s anything else I haven’t considered. Please keep your responses simple--providing links to websites with directions is fine, so long as you're sure that those instructions are RIGHT. Details inside. [more inside]

Fellow hams, do any of you have an '86 or '87 callbook? I'm trying to figure out when I got my technician-class license with an eye toward the upgrade to general class. I was licensed under the old rules, complete with credit for my novice-class code speed. But I don't remember when that happened. The call is KAØIIU. Appreciate it!
I'm on Verizon and have been stuck with an iPhone 4 (yes, the original 4) for what feels like the better part of 2 years. My Verizon account says I'm not eligible for an upgrade until December. What are my options to upgrade now without breaking the bank? [more inside]

I have a MacBook Pro from 2009, with a 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo and 8 GB RAM. I am running Mavericks on it, but I find that it can be slow when it is accessing the disk a lot, and it runs hot. It meets the minimum spec for Mavericks but I am thinking that I am over-stretching it. I am planning to upgrade the 500GB HD to a 1TB hybrid. Would this be better able to run Mavericks or should I think of stepping back to something like Snow Leopard when I change the hard disk?
I accidentally added a line of source for Utopic to sources.list. And later my system can't get into GUI. While trying to fix the problem I accidentally typed in command sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade. So tragedy happened: my system was upgraded to 14.10 utopic daily built! which I don't want! what's worse, becuase it was upgrading from 12.10 to 14.10, a lot of dependency can't resolve, and many services stopped working. The worst thing is, I still can't get into GUI. What should I do for this circurmstance? I'm a newbie in Linux/Unix. Thank you very much!!!
My Nexus 7 (2012) seems to have bitten the dust. Should I replace it with a bit of cash I have set aside, or would this be a bad idea now it's been around a while? [more inside]
This seems to be a harder problem to solve than I expected. My venerable Umax Astra 4450 scanner has a transparency cover -- it has a large area which lights up to scan transparencies and such -- but it doesn't have drivers newer than Windows XP. Running XP is less and less of an option these days. So, I'm shopping for a new scanner with a transparency cover...and I'm not having much luck. Suggestions? [more inside]

Short version: My web site needs to be updated from Joomla 1.5 to a newer version. But it's running an old template that isn't compatible with newer Joomla. I have a cat. My girlfriend is allergic to cats (previously). I'd like to get a Roomba, since we've noticed that regular vacuuming with my HEPA-filter vacuum helps a lot. The theory here is "set robot to vacuum at 9am, come home at 7pm to cleaner apartment (with dust settled, since the roomba ran at 9am, not 7pm). [more inside]

My early-2007 Macbook Pro is still going strong, besides the fact that it gets very hot and that the battery is kaput. The biggest problem I have with it is that the OS (v.10.5.8) is far enough out of date that I can't update most of my software, and have a hard time acquiring new software. Is it worthwhile to upgrade to the latest version of OS X, or would I be better of just springing for a new mac? [more inside]
In 2007 or so, I built a Drupal site for a client who is a local media personality. The front page is a blog of his latest activities. The rest of the site serves as an archive for about 150 photos from his career, with a handful of videos and mp3s. He's ready to upgrade the site, so it's time to bring him into 2013. [more inside]

Can I simply physically replace the 1366*768 LCD in my HP EliteBook 8440p with the 1600*900 part and have the laptop autodetect the new screen and show the proper resolution? Put simply, is HP 594090-001 plug-and-play? [more inside]
