I upgraded to Sierra on my iMac. Immediately the printer and computer couldn't communicate and I couldn't scan (printing worked, though). After many long and many conversations with Mac and HP tech support, we figured out a workaround. Now, I just noticed that when I print multiple page Word documents, it only prints 2-sided. The Print dialogue box no longer has the two-side box option. I've again talked to Apple and HP and have looked online into known issues between Sierra and Word, all to no avail Any ideas, anyone? Thanks.
I have phone screen issues that are making phone life very difficult. Should I suck it up until I can upgrade in May 2017? Should I pay to get the screen fixed? Should I get a refurbished phone for the mean time? [more inside]
I'm trying to wire up our Burning Man bikes with rechargeable USB batteries as opposed to bulky, wasteful, PITA AA cell batteries. I'm having trouble finding something that will output the right voltage. Halp? [more inside]
I bought a Dell XPS 13 9343 about a year ago. I've managed to pretty much fill up the 128 GB capacity of the SSD already. I am contemplating upgrading the memory, which leads me to ponder: Am I crazy to attempt this myself? If so, what should I do instead? If not, what type of memory should I install? Also, what do I do with the SSD currently in my computer if I install a new one? [more inside]
The only thing preventing me from upgrading to Windows 10 is the new built-in Photos app. The Photos app from Windows 8 is exactly suited to my needs, and I would like to keep it. Is this possible? [more inside]
I'm buying a new laptop, and have a choice (via work) between a 500GB but faster (7200) harddrive, or a 1TB hard drive that is slower (5600). I'm fairly certain I'm going to go with the faster drive as I will need to do some video editing, but I'm worried about the size of the memory (precisely because I'll be doing some editing!). Any advice? How hard would it be to expand the size of the drive if I find that I am, indeed, in need of space? I have a couple of external drives, but I don't know if they get me ahead at all as they're the slower speed as well... THANKS! :)
My Mid-2010 Macbook Pro, which currently runs Mavericks, has been fuddy-duddying around as of late. Beachball city. As such, I finally pulled the trigger on upgrading my hardware: I bought a new SSD (the Samsung 850 EVO 500gb 2.5'') and 16gb of RAM. I'm preparing to install the SSD, and am trying to figure out how best to migrate my data from the old hard drive to the new one. I'm also wondering whether now would be a good time to upgrade to El Capitan. Help? [more inside]
After its upgrade to Windows 10, my desktop no longer has sound. I had 8.1 until this afternoon, and had sound from the computer, NOT through additional speakers. Is it possible to restore this sound functionality under the new system? [more inside]

I have a Macbook Air that is happily chugging along on OS 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). Obviously, I haven't upgraded the OS in, well, ever, which hasn't really been a problem. However, lately, I'm starting to get little issues here and there, where I can't use a particular app or software because my OS doesn't meet the minimum requirements, etc. My biggest concern about upgrading is whether my computer has enough oomph to handle the newer, bigger OS or if it will just get bogged down. I'm about to update my Thinkpad430s from Windows 7 to Windows 10. I always create partitions on my hard drive and store all data separately from the main Windows installation. Do I need to back those partitions up before upgrading or is backing up the primary partition sufficient?
I'm trying to stay off contract in order to keep my unlimited data plan, but I also want to get a new phone. I've never purchased a phone off-contract so this is kind of uncharted territory. [more inside]
I ended up with the responsibility of managing the computers at our office. For a ten person staff with fairly simple computer needs -- only a couple of us routinely use anything more complex than Microsoft Office -- is Windows 10 the right choice yet? [more inside]
My wee, sturdy iPhone 4 is reaching the end of its unnatural lifespan. I plan to get a new phone in January and cannot decide from these options: 5s, 6, and [unknown Android capable of seducing me]. I'm considering doing a major computer upgrade - CPU, mainboard, and video card. Is Windows going to completely shit the bed after I do this? [more inside]
My Mac is (and has been) prompting me to update software. Every time we get past the "Agree" or "disagree" prompt, the window tells me it can't be installed on "Macintosh HD." There is 300-some GB of space. Any ideas what's going on? [more inside]
FML. I upgraded my iphone STUPID ME and now it is stuck with a prompt that just says "iTunes." I don't have a computer available, and I have to meet people in a few hours ... phone is our only method of communication. PLEASE HALP
I want to spend less than $400 to buy a fully functional new desktop. Regardless of the CPU it would have, I want to be able to put in an i7 later on. I want to be able to add more RAM and a powerful video card without having to get a new case or power supply. HDD should be at least 1TB. It can start with 4GB of RAM, since I plan to upgrade. If it's 4GB i'd prefer it to be on a single stick. I would also prefer Windows 10 to be already installed.
I have an “early 2009” Mac Mini that I am nursing along. It’s not my main computer but I do use it enough to want to keep it running smoothly. Last year, without putting a lot of thought into it, I upgraded to Mavericks from Snow Leopard. I noticed a hit in speed even though the reviews I was reading after the fact said the opposite should happen. Whatever. So this past weekend, I thought it’d try it again with a clean install. [more inside]
In the past, every time I've upgraded Windows (3.11 to 95 to 97 to XP to 7) I've done a clean install. For the first time, I'm considering upgrading (to Windows 10) with an in-place (overwrite) installation, not a clean install. My Windows 7 has been acting badly lately, probably due to various registry cruft. Does an in-place install take care of that, or is all the registry cruft carried over, and should I do a clean install instead? (A clean install would involve many hours more work)
I’m thinking about finally making the switch to a Macbook, but an older version. Is there any reason why this is a bad idea? [more inside]
So I just made the decision to keep my old 2002 Subaru Outback rather than buy a new (to me) car. It's a great car and runs well, so I should be able to get another few years out of it. But it occurred to me that one thing that would significantly improve my enjoyment of the car is if I upgraded the audio system. Problem is, I don't even know what possibilities are out there. Can you look at my list of wants and tell me which are possible/what I should buy? [more inside]
I need to upgrade from Mac OS 10.7.5 to OS 8 to use a tool for work. Should I just go ahead and upgrade to OS 10.10.3? I ask because the 10.7.5 works just fine and I'm inclined to leave well enough alone unless as now when I need a later version for work. Is the upgrade (to whatever version) buggy, complicated, worth it? Thanks. [more inside]

My vintage 2008 Macbook is eagerly gazing at the pasture that has been beckoning it for a few years now. I have replaced the hard-drive and maxed out the RAM, but the poor little guy is simply ready for a well-deserved rest. So - what's next for me and when? Macbook Pro? Air? iMac? iPad? Difficulty level: incorporating moderate music production, Netflix, general web use, somewhat limited funds, and massive over-thinking. [more inside]

Way back in 2005, I wrote an essay in wiki form using MediaWiki 1.5.1 on my website's third-party server. I did not upgrade it, and consequently it got broken when the server upgraded to an more advanced version of... well, I'm not sure what broke it, but probably MySQL, or PHP, or something. It's no longer supported. The database with its content still exists. Is it possible to get it back? How would I go about doing so? [more inside]
I plugged my iPhone in to my computer and it says you need to upgrade your software. So the phone was updating to iOS 8.1.1 and it errored out. It says upgrading failed, you need to restore to factory setting and you will lose all the data. So I tried to upgrade again and it failed again. I took it to the geniuses at the apple store and they said there is no hope of recovering my data. Does the hive mind know of a way??
I have a 2006 Mac Pro 1.1 (specs below the fold) which I understand can't be upgraded to current OS versions without a CPU replacement. I'm not sure if I can replace the CPU, or if that would even be sufficient to upgrade to a current Mac OS. How hard would it be to change the CPU, and what is my best option if I can't / won't change it? [more inside]
First, this is not a gigantic deal. I have all my data backed up via CrashPlan, I do most of my computing on a MBP Retina that's about 6 months old, and I've hardly used the Mini at all in that time. My question is what I can best do with the doorstop my Mac Mini now is. [more inside]

Normally I’d solve this by myself, but a severe bout of depression is making it impossible for me to think clearly. I’m so overwhelmed I’m barely keeping myself from bursting into tears at work. I’m basically asking AskMe to proofread my plan, point out vital information I’m missing, and let me know if there’s anything else I haven’t considered. Please keep your responses simple--providing links to websites with directions is fine, so long as you're sure that those instructions are RIGHT. Details inside. [more inside]

I have a MacBook Pro from 2009, with a 3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo and 8 GB RAM. I am running Mavericks on it, but I find that it can be slow when it is accessing the disk a lot, and it runs hot. It meets the minimum spec for Mavericks but I am thinking that I am over-stretching it. I am planning to upgrade the 500GB HD to a 1TB hybrid. Would this be better able to run Mavericks or should I think of stepping back to something like Snow Leopard when I change the hard disk?
I accidentally added a line of source for Utopic to sources.list. And later my system can't get into GUI. While trying to fix the problem I accidentally typed in command sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade. So tragedy happened: my system was upgraded to 14.10 utopic daily built! which I don't want! what's worse, becuase it was upgrading from 12.10 to 14.10, a lot of dependency can't resolve, and many services stopped working. The worst thing is, I still can't get into GUI. What should I do for this circurmstance? I'm a newbie in Linux/Unix. Thank you very much!!!
