I work in a large company with offices around the world, but with head offices in North America. Today, as I was reading a policy update, I came across the usage of the term "act as a quarterback". To me, this idiom seems to be a little biased towards North American workplaces (especially given that my company has a presence outside of North America), and can easily be replaced by "coordinator". But I'm not sure if I should let it go or to ask the copywriter of the release to consider using a different term to eliminate unconscious bias (and in the unlikely event that I do contact the copywriter, what would be the best approach) so I would like to see how everyone on Metafilter thinks. Thank you in advance!
LinkedIn offers users of its service three ways to post new information to individual accounts - share an update, upload a presentation or publish a post. I've shared many updates and when I click refresh, the post disappears while the post that was just below my post remains. I can scroll down hours and not see the update I shared seconds before. What happened to it?
This morning I was working on my computer, and stopped to take a break for lunch. I left my computer on--it generally goes to sleep after 10 minutes of inactivity. When I returned from lunch, my computer had unexpectedly shut down and had to be rebooted. Once it restarted, I noticed that it had updated several programs that have been prompting me for updates, like iTunes and Firefox. (I had purposefully not been updating them.) My computer requires permission from me to update programs like this, and it has never updated programs without that permission. Any thoughts as to what might have happened this time? [more inside]
So I have been working on my house and making it energy efficient. It is now time to replace the basement windows in my split level. One double wide window needs to be replaced with one that opens to meet code, but the other three single wide windows do not. Would I be better installing glass blocks in those three, not vented, or installing either a picture, slider, or another type of insulated vinyl replacement window? If I should do a replacement window, which type should I use? [more inside]
So, Adobe has abandoned retail versions of Creative Suite (and its component apps) in favor of Creative Cloud. This terrifies me. [more inside]
If I have an update already downloaded OTA but not installed on my iPhone, will updating through iTunes delete the OTA download once the update is done? I want to know this because I tried to install the 7.0.2 update on my iPhone 5S (running 7.0.1) and it was unable to verify the update a number of times when trying to install it. So I plugged it into iTunes and did the update through a Mac. Does the OTA download get deleted on the iPhone when the update is done through the Mac? I don't want to have the update taking up room somewhere on my iPhone.
If I've upgraded PHP on my Mac, should I now avoid all OS X Updates? I'm hosting a website on a Mac mini in a datacenter, and some of my software required a newer version of PHP than what's included out-of-the-box in OS X Mountain Lion. I keep getting the notification saying system updates are ready, and restart to install. But I'm scared it's going to overwrite my PHP upgrades and break everything. And it took me an insanely long time to get the PHP upgrade to work properly and play nicely with OS X Server.

Just reinstalled Vista in my laptop, and now the next step is to install MS updates, right? The thing is, I don't think now installing every available update from MS Windows Update is a good idea. What are the absolutely necessary updates to install, if any? [more inside]

I thought their was a service to do this but I can't remember the name, any ideas?
