Overhead Ruby Knife Hone

I saw this knife hone once many years ago on a Youtube about a sandwich chef. I have been unable to find it online, or to describe it to my brother-in-law who is into such things. It was ruby, I presume from the color, and mounted above the work surface. [more inside]

Unusual feats of badassery

I'm looking for feats of skill, intelligence, or courage that fall outside the usual martial arenas (so, no beating somebody up). I would prefer written sources but will accept other media also. This is kind of vague, so let me give an example: I remember once reading a book where the protagonist challenges some alleged badass to slit his wrist and just bleed into a bucket. First person to staunch the bleeding loses. I'm not really interested in identifying the book, but rather finding more examples of surprising challenges like that. [more inside]

Her Cats Were Named...

A female detective had two cats, which she'd named Onanoff and Offanon. Some variation in the spelling is likely. This was Sci Fi radio program in the 80's. Anybody remember her, or her kitties? Super bonus points for a link to the archives, if it exists. Google won't even discuss it with me.

Their time to thrive

I'm looking for examples of plants, animals or ecosystems that suddenly thrive under relatively rare and occasional conditions. One example is the marine ecosystem of microorganisms, shrimp, tiny fish, etc that thrive on the corpses of dead whales. Another is the Australian eucalypts which regenerate after bushfires. Another example is pantry moths, which can suddenly explode in population when grain is improperly stored. Can you think of any other examples?

trying to have an unusual time in new york city

Trying to plan a honeymoon in New York City-looking for an affordable (150$ or under) hotel that is decent, in a good location for someone trying to find their way around the city, and maybe with some character(although the character is definitely not as important as having my own bathroom). I would really like some suggestions of good sites to see with a surreal or fortean/paranormal flavor. My fiancee loves to do grave rubbings(charcoal rubbings of old or unusual graves), so any pointers on what cemeteries would have the oldest gravestones would also be appreciated. [more inside]
