Letter of recommendation from department graduate?

I'm considering applying to an MS program in statistics at a competitive school. A guy I've worked with holds a PhD from the statistics department at that school, and I think he'd give me a pretty good recommendation if I asked him for one. But I'm unsure whether or not that's a good thing to do, as this fellow isn't a professor. [more inside]

Final-year Marketing student Worries

I am fourth-year student, soon graduating with a Marketing Management (BComm) degree from Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada. This University doesn't exactly have an amazing reputation, especially for its Business Management program...It isn't bad, but it isn't great. I think the institution is good and I enjoyed (for the most part) my years here. I'll probably be graduating with a 3.5 GPA. Tell me mefites, how can I improve my chances for meaningful, successful employment when I'm graduating from a university with a lame reputation, a less-than-amazing GPA? [more inside]

What are some useful directions for grad school?

I'm an engineer with a career in software and I recently finished an MBA from a good school. I'd like to keep the learning going, preferably in something that complements my background, but I don't have any specific direction in mind. I guess I'm hoping that someone might suggest something that's entirely off my radar. What should I be thinking about? [more inside]

What's the deal with the MSL degree?

Goes by several names: Master of Studies in Law, Master of Legal Studies, Master of Science in Law. Wikipedia says: "a master's degree offered by some law schools to students who wish to study the law but do not want to become attorneys." I'd never heard of such a degree until recently -- is it present in the public consciousness? I read MBA or MFA and I have intuition for what those involve, but not so much MSL. [more inside]

What was it like to be in college on 9/11/2001?

What was it like to live on campus at a residential U.S. college on Sept. 11, 2001? How and when did news spread about the attacks? How did students around you respond? Did people flood outside, gather in small groups indoors, congregate at television sets? Did professors cancel class, or set rigid attendance requirements? I'm interested in generalities as well specifics. What was the mood like on that day and immediately afterward? How did the pulse and the life of the campus alter that day? Especially interested in colleges and universities NOT in communities that were directly attacked.

Best printer for artists in a networked Mac lab?

What would be the best price-conscious inkjet printer (probably at or below $600 though if that's unrealistic, let me know) that can be networked easily to Macs in a school setting for artistic purposes (think high print quailty in color and b/w, low cost ink refills, possibly a high quality scanner as part of it, ideally able to print bleeds or pages larger than 8.5x11")? I've been told that Epson and HP might be good brands for this, but Brother's been mentioned as well...

How long to get ADHD diagnosis?

I've never had insurance before and am getting it soon. I have seen counselors in the past and have been told that I might have some sort of ADHD and maybe depression. I do have trouble in school, especially in math and science classes. In order for the disability services at my school to provide me services, I need a licensed psychologist or psychiatrist to evaluate me. How long after I sign up for one of these will I start seeing him or her? How many sessions are there usually before they can evaluate me properly? I need to do this in a span of 4 months for spring semesters classes so I can receive accommodations. Is this asking too much? Will it be too quick? [more inside]

I want a new job. I'm not well qualified. What can I do?

I've been working a data-entry job for almost two years now. I got it as a temp position shortly after finishing college. It became full-time a year later. I graduated from a good school, but late, and with mediocre grades in journalism, my major. I stuck to the temp job because I bombed out of freelance work. This failure aggravated my self-loathing and convinced me to abandon journalism, for which I have shown little talent. I abandoned it for a dead-end job. I would like a job with better chances for promotion and with better pay. How, if at all, do I find such a job, considering my mental health, which sabotages each stage of the hunt, and my poor qualifications, which don't help? [more inside]

How can I make my work experience relevant for a job in academia?

I am in need of some help... I've just completed an M.A. in Anthropology, I'm trying to pull together a CV for a job teaching as an adjunct professor or community college professor. I don't have professional teaching experience, even though I've got loads of experience teaching to my peers in graduate seminars. (I'm also not sure how to convey that, other than in a cover letter.) I've got some of my written work (Academia.edu), and one of my presentations on YouTube. I'm in the process of revising some other papers to put on Academia.edu... Hoping, I suppose, that displaying my work will make me a better candidate. Now, here's the question: How can I make my existing (non-teaching!) work experience relevant to applying for academic jobs? [more inside]

How university works in the UK

This has escalated quickly

Son of 1066 had early acceptance to a university six hours away. And we've been planning for him to go there since early December. Last week he decided he now wants to go to the local university and live with me. Acceptance is a given due to his grades. This is going to save me tons of money. The problem? I have had basically zero social life for the past sixteen years because I only had him on the weekends (no regrets). But I was really looking forward to meeting some friends and possibly even dating. So how do we go about transitioning from part-time mom and kid to full-time, loving, supportive, independent mom and adult son/roommate? Advice on any aspects of having a relative/roommate would be appreciated.
