Why would or wouldn't a state legislature support public radio?

Some states provide zero funding to their public radio stations (either directly or via state education funds like, to colleges) while others give a lot (last year, Georgia gave public radio almost 15-million dollars). Who decides, the legislature or the voters, whether or not to support public radio in a state?

Help with State Laws Website

I've built a website that combines all state constitutions in one place. I want to build another website that puts all state laws in one place. But state laws change much more often than state constitutions. And although states make their laws available online (usually in the form of revised statutes), their word count greatly exceeds the total word count of state constitution. It took six months to build the state constitutions website. [more inside]

Will Cure Dengue Fever for Food!

So I've spent the past year and a half burning through my severance package as slowly as I could, accomplishing some things, learning some stuff and generally getting my soul back. Now I'm feeling the urge to find a job and do science again, but I'm serious about the do science part. Help me rebuild my resume to get something I can live with. [more inside]

Common freshman course on the history and culture of Chicago?

Is there a common course at one of the big universities in Chicago, that all of the freshmen take, which focuses on Chicago history and culture? Perhaps called something like "the Chicago experience"? I thought that this was done at the University of Chicago, but I cannot find it on their website. Could it be another school?

Pomona Students

I've just applied to Pomona, early decision. I'd love to go there, but I'm kind of clueless about what kind of student you have to be to get in (outstanding academically, just interesting, rich). Were you accepted to Pomona or another prestigious university, and if so, what kind of student were you?
