British Prime Minister Theresa May confirmed that leaving the EU would mean leaving the single market, and that both Houses of Parliament would get to vote on the deal. If the House of Lords believes it would be bad for Britain to leave the single market, could they prevent Brexit? How likely is this to occur? Could the Commons overrule them in this instance?
I'm looking for a bank account that works both in the US and UK. My situation - UK citizen, US green card. My main need at the moment - for folks in the UK who are dealing with estate matters to conveniently deposit sterling in the UK, which I can then access, should I need to, in the US or the UK. Thank you! [more inside]
It should be within a couple of hours of London by train, but not Brighton (we go there a lot). Probably for just one night--a Sunday. It's for my SO's birthday, so someplace romantic would be good although it's not a requirement. Recommendations for places to stay, restaurants and pubs also welcome. [more inside]
I've started the 2nd season of "Hinterland" on US Netflix (and thoroughly enjoyed the 1st season). My question has to do with how a Welshman (or woman) would perceive a Londoner's "Welsh accent." [more inside]
I'm going to be in London this weekend, and I would like to see a good play. There’s obviously a lot of great theater in the city, & I’m curious about both The Painkiller (Rob Brydon!), and The Master Builder (Ralph Fiennes!) but I don’t want to be over-awed by celebrity names. What would be a really good theater piece for me to see? Stuff that is experimental or in a basement back room, etc., is all just fine. Thanks!

I have 7 boxes (each 65cm x 40cm x 35cm) that weigh a total of 125kgs I need shipping from Liverpool, UK to Toronto, Canada as part of my Permanent Residence application. I've never done this before and I need company recommendations.
Since the UK elections last week, I've realized that I only really know the surface of British politics. It seems like a worthwhile thing to get deeper into, but recent events have rendered non-party sources rather...breathless, and official sources never actually talk about what they do or plan on doing directly. So, I turn to you all - where can I read good, in-depth information on the agenda of the major UK political parties?
My fiancee is planning to move to Chicago at some point later this year--if all goes well with our engagement, of course ;). She has a GDL (law conversion) degree (in addition to non-law undergrad and postgrad degrees) from the UK and is looking for advice, first and foremost, on the "lay of the land" and things to keep in mind in transferring environments. Hullo, I am trying to identify the names of these songs I learned to play years ago. According to my music book they are childrens' songs from the UK. Google (and Baidu, since these are from a Chinese music book) are not helping. Names and song lyrics are awesome. Here are links posted on Flickr (since YT doesn't wanna work with me): 1. Big Geese song 2. Calendar song

I live in the US and have followed the RIAA/MPAA suits closely. Over the years I have heard British news agencies report such-and-such as being charged with illegal downloading and wondered if that were even possible. [more inside]
The machine-readable code at the bottom of the id page of a UK passport (starting P<GBR) contains a name on one line, and on the second line a long string of numbers, lots of chevrons and then a two-digit number. My mum claims that this two-digit number indicates the number of people with the same name as me already registered as having a passport. This seems unlikely, but is there any truth in it? My extremely-uncommon and forever-mispelled last name—Huxham—happens to also be the name of a tiny village right outside of Exeter in SW England. My ancestors left Britain from the port of Plymouth on the other side of Devonshire, so I feel fairly confident this might be where my last name comes from. However, even though I have the means and the desire to visit this hamlet…what do I do there? Just start knocking on doors? Should I contact the parish priest and/or tourism board? [more inside]
About a month ago, a British company hired me to work 25+ hours a week for three months, with the possibility to go full-time after that if my coworker and I land a certain number of clients. (We're opening its New York office.) Payment is a clusterfuck. [more inside]
Highclere Castle has become quite famous due to the success of Downton Abbey. As a result, the castle is open to ticketed tourists on particular days over the year, mostly the summer. Now, this is all well and good, but for folks visiting from across the Atlantic, a loaded question arises: Given that Highclere in and of itself is a very small village, which of the surrounding cities would serve best as a base of visiting operations for a day or two? A few years back, my friend Russell (mid-twenties, American, white, male) was in Scotland, at a bus stop. It was late at night, he'd been drinking, and some guy (mid-twenties, British, white, male) came up and angrily asked him "Are you of Scottish descent?" Russell raised his hands and eyebrows in a confused "Whoa, no idea what you're on about" gesture and said, "Buddy, you got the wrong guy." The man then punched Russell in the face. WHY? [more inside]
On Friday I'm going to Birmingham (Sutton Coldfield) for three months (until early may) for an engineering internship. What should I know? What's the Birmingham area known for amongst Britons? What should I absolutely not miss in my down time? What social norms (at work or otherwise) might be unusual to me? What do locals do for fun? What parts of the city should I wander around in to get a sense of the place (and in which areas would doing so get me killed or served with an anti-social order)? [more inside]

As a child, I was an American expat, growing up in Scotland. This time of year I have many fond memories of Christmas Pantomines, Christmas Pudding, Paper Crowns & Crackers, 'Cadbury's Christmas Selection Boxes,' etc.' I also remember getting copies of year-end "annuals," particularly the 'Beano Annual' and the 'Blue Peter Annual.' There were many others, but I am at a loss for remembering their titles. What are/were some of the others published at Christmastime?
If Blair called for a referendum in Northern Ireland on joining Eire, which side would win? Has the higher birth-rate of Catholics made a difference? Is the increasing paramilitary disarmament indicative of a political climate in which a democratic handover could take place with an acceptably low level of violence?
