For career and appropriate tech: Should I be an electrician or plumber?

I'm currently in the application process for the plumbers/pipefitters and electricians unions in my area. I'm trying to decide which one I'd prefer, if I get a choice. I like that both are licensed trades where I could work on big industrial/commercial projects but also have good residential skills. Also, I'm interested in alternative/appropriate/transition technology -- and I'm wondering which trade would give me more versatile skills for that sort of application. Any advice on which trade might give me more skills to make appropriate tech? [more inside]

Economic Fantasy And The Anti-Anthem.

Settle a bet: Friend claimed that Terry Pratchett's "Going Postal" and "Making Money" where unique in the fantasy genre for dealing so much with the economics and " white collar" systems of a fantasy setting. I said that couldn't be true but couldn't think of any examples ( they abound in Sci-Fi, but we're talking wands and robes here, and the Baroque Cycle is only kind-of-fantasy). So, what are some examples of fantasy novels where things like labor unions, mediums of exchange, guild politics, trade imbalances, commodities markets, hostile takeovers and government regulation are both explored and woven into the plot? What do you know about being management in a union environment?

I may, in the future, have the opportunity to move to a management role in a union environment at a state university. Some state universities have professional unions and some have service employee unions. Do you have experience working or managing in an environment like this? How is it different from working in a non-union academic environment? If I were to make a move like this, how could I be the best manager for both union and non-union people possible?

Help me learn more about the labor and leftist movements via audio

I'd like to learn more about the history of the left, particularly the far left, particularly as it relates to me, a late-20's north american male. I'd love to learn more about the left, labor, unions, communism, socialism, labor laws, etc., particularly in what factors and machinations gave and took away rights and freedoms. Here's the kicker - I'm really, really hoping to find them in audio format so I can learn while I exercise. Audiobooks, podcasts, lectures, etc. [more inside]

Credit Union Law...

[US banking law filter] So my credit union 'forces' me to deposit checks, payable to me, into a savings deposit account (share deposit account), rather than my checking account. I'm not sure they should be doing this. Lots of gory details inside.... [more inside]

Did the transatlantic union merger mean anything?

Two years ago the American United Steelworkers and the British UNITE merged to form what was then referred to as a transcontinental "super union". I can find all sorts of articles before and just after this occurrence, but very little follow up. This isn't particularly surprising: Labor news in the U.S. barely gets any coverage. But does anyone know how the merger turned out? [more inside]

How is SEIU pissing off every other labor union in the United States?

[Labor union filter] U.S. labor unions are fighting, and most opinions point to SEIU as the bad guy in a couple specific conflicts - that between SEIU and UNITE HERE, and that between SEIU/UHW and the NUHW. I think I agree that SEIU is the aggressor, but I can't find enough information to really decide. Please tell me what is going on between SEIU, UNITE HERE, and NUHW. [more inside]

Unions
