Please help my little union find an online platform for decision-making. We would like a secure way to dis/approve proposals and vote yearly for officers. Anonymous voting with a unique identifier is required. Bonus points for discussion capabilities and ease of use. [more inside]

What does it mean for a union to be defunct but not decertified?

Acquaintances who are currently graduate employees at the University of Kansas are very worried about an administration proposal to cut the hours GTA's/GRA's can work. From what I am seeing on social media, these acquaintances and the GTA/GRA community are planning on making a lot of noise to the administration and the media with some help from sympathetic faculty and departments. Basically, pleading and threatening. But, KU apparently *has* a collective bargaining unit for graduate students, GTAC, which successfully negotiated a single contract in 2001 before apparently becoming completely marginalized. It seems like the GTA/GRA community are basically unaware that a union ever existed. But, does the GTA/GRA community not still possess the protections of having formed and certified a union? It seems that the last contract expired in 2009, but I can't find anything about GTAC decertifying. Or does decertification happen automagically after some period of non-activity or lapse of contract? I have basic knowledge of labor law and NLRB rules and have done some additional research, but I can't answer these questions for myself or my acquaintances. [more inside]

Name that graphic style!

I'm fascinated by old union logos, especially the iconic IBEW (fist-and-lightning-bolts), Teamsters (two horses) and IWW (globe) insignia. I like the heraldic layouts, the modern-as-of-1920 visual style, and the heroic/futuristic/quasi-mystical iconography. You see similar features in Masonic iconography, logos for other fraternal orders (Lions, Eagles, the FOP) and in some older corporate logos (MGM and Paramount, the old American Airlines logo, Does this cluster of design features have a name? Where did it come from? What are some other good examples? [more inside]

What will happen to the volunteers?

An non-profit organization with staff and volunteers has been non-union for its existence. Because of proposed changes by its board of directors, staff have applied to unionize. Some staff perform the same tasks as volunteers, but volunteers perform the overwhelming majority of the core work of the organization. The ratio of volunteers to staff is about 35 to 1. First, can a non profit unionize? And second, if it becomes a union shop, what will be the status of the volunteers?
