I’ve been researching a lot, and have read time and time again, that during interviews, you’re also interviewing the employer to see if you’re a “good fit” together and that you should never seem desperate for a job, but rather, you should pretend money is no object and you’re only there because you think it would be fun, etc. The question is—how do you do this when you are in fact desperate for money and you need a job ASAP? (long-winded details behind cut)

I have a feeling that I am going to be laid off at my review next week. Since I suspect that this is coming, I would appreciate any suggestions on what I should say at the review and also, what the next steps I should take are, particularly things that I may not think of or overlook during the somewhat emotional time. Further details on my particular situation inside...

I'm badly depressed and anxious. And I've got the worst job of my life - I'm 42, so that's saying a lot - complete with a boss I despise and who seems to despise me. My therapist thinks I should quit. Um, hello? Realistically, what can I do? Special flower BS inside.

3.5 years out of college and I'm still looking for permanent work. I've sent out a ton of resumes, and have had a few interviews, but can't seem to get anything to stick. What am I doing wrong? What can I do better? How do I fix this?

I'm trying to fill out my bio section which anyone who clicks my name on the blog, and I'm wondering if there is a casual and witty, but sincere way of writing it to let people know that I'm available for unemployment (or should I mention it at all)?

Is it possible to draw unemployments benefits in Georgia, while having a LLC and the business making money, but not paying myself?
I got laid off in Atlanta around July 2009, but I had a nice severance package and got paid bi-weekly till December 2009.
Around September 2009, I formed an LLC and made a couple thousand through the end of 2009. I am filing taxes for the LLC as needed.
So far this year, I've made a bit more, but I'm wondering about unemployment benefits. I have never withdrawn any money from the LLC bank accounts into personal accounts at all and don't plan on it for a while.
I can't figure out from the Georgia DOL website if I can get unemployment benefits under this situation. Anyone have better google-fu skills or know otherwise?

My friend has been in a job in NY State for close to 2 years. From the start her salary was substantially lower than she felt she should be paid and she was verbally promised a bonus which never materialized. Nevertheless she stuck with job. Now, the company is going down the tubes. Many people have been laid off. She's been hoping for many months to be laid off herself so she can get unemployment benefits to aide in a transition. But, for a variety of reasons -- mainly that she's a very efficient employee -- she hasn't been let go. This stressful climate of layoffs and, with it, an increase in workload for her, has made it a very inhospitable workplace. She wants to quit ASAP. But she also doesn't want to miss out on unemployment benefits. What are her options? More inside...

My boss told me that my group will be moved off-site in the next month or two. The new location is about 1/2 mile away from the people that I interact with multiple times daily. Can I get unemployment if I quit?

I'm a post-Ph.D. (not computer science, alas, but history) and have decided to seek my fortune outside academia. I have lots of experience organizing and researching and analyzing and presenting and teaching all sorts of things in all sorts of contexts, and have made my CV into a resume that shows I'm not just another egghead. Unfortunately, I'm coming up empty handed after several months of a full-court press, and I'm thinking it's time to contact headhunting/recruiting agencies that might be interested in someone like me. I'd love your thoughts and suggestions on which firms to contact in the New York area.

I am a professional person and will be "downsized" from my current company next month. Since I am changing professions in the meantime, it may take 4 to 6 months to secure my next place of employment. Financial resources are my concern. I have 6 months of mortgage payments saved up, and no other debt beyond monthly utilities, cable, internet, etc. I do have savings I can draw from, and I am considering applying for state unemployment benefits. I may get a small severance package from the current employer. Would it be wise to seek a line of credit while I'm still employed? Would this put my house in jeopardy should it take longer to find work? Are there other resources I should consider?

I've been unemployed for a few months, and have been actively looking for work, with no luck. All I have to go on are classified ads and limited online resources. I have two sneaking suspicions: 1) there are lots of jobs that don't show up in those venues, so how do I find them? and 2) HR departments are generally an impediment to getting a foot in the door, so how do I get past them?
