Tell me about living in Leeds or Cardiff!

My husband and I are considering a temporary relocation to the UK from Canada - he plans to apply to various MA programs at UK universities in the next year or two. We’d love to learn more about life in Leeds and Cardiff as they are two cities with programs he’s interested in. We’ve read previous AskMeFi threads on Cardiff here and here. [more inside]

Giclée printer in the uk

I need to get 4 roughly A3 sized giclée prints produced from my own digital artwork for an art show and I'm looking for a printing company in the UK. I really need them by the end of the coming week. I live in a rural area so I need somewhere that does mail order. There is a general print shop in my nearest town but I don't think they'll be able to do the quality I'll need from an ordinary print (although I could be wrong I've done this before) I've tried a couple of companies with other things but I was not happy with the quality of one and the other has still not delivered a week after their quoted turn around time. Does anyone have any recommendations?

What's the best way for a UK company to pay American worker bees?

About a month ago, a British company hired me to work 25+ hours a week for three months, with the possibility to go full-time after that if my coworker and I land a certain number of clients. (We're opening its New York office.) Payment is a clusterfuck. [more inside]

Riding a motorbike in the UK on a US license: What are the rules?

I moved to the UK earlier this year for work, and have recently bought a Vespa scooter. I had an unrestricted motorcycle license in the US (Illinois, specifically). I'm in the process of getting the Vespa insured, and am applying for my provisional license (with the aim, of course, of taking CBT and getting a full license down the road.) As I understand it, I'm technically allowed to ride on my US license for the first 12 months I'm here. I also understand that, were I a British citizen acquiring his first motorcycle license, I would not be allowed to carry a passenger until I'd passed the test for a full (not provisional) license. Does that rule apply to me as well? Also, do the 'L' plate restrictions change at all for my situation? [more inside]

My Job As A Sex Worker and British Naturalisation

I am an American national with indefinite leave to remain in the UK and have been here since 2005. I am registered self employed as a dominatrix - yes they seem to have a category for this at Inland Revenue - and it seems that in order to naturalise as a British citizen, I will need to send the Home Office a statement of accounts with my application! So there's no hiding it (not that I would want to). My question is - will being an out sex worker make them pause at granting me citizenship, because of the good character requirement?

Five years ago I immigrated to the UK on the basis of ancestry. I am now applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain. Alternatively, can anyone recommend the best forum on which to ask such a question? [more inside]

chocolate in the UK

Is my sense of taste changing with age, or have chocolate bars become disgusting lately? It now seems massively oversweet to an oppressive degree, plus some other intense taste that might be salt, and with very little chocolate-ness. It's become a sort of 'why would I eat that?' thing for me. Cadburys, Nestle, Thorntons (!), Mars, Rowntrees, Ferrero roche, and especially Guylian. I haven't splashed out on luxury chocolate recently so don't know if they're part of this taste disappointment syndrome. Is anyone else noticing the same thing? Why might this be?

Cross-border marriage - what are the issues?

Due to a series of very bad events, my wife and I have ended up employed in two different countries. We are both American by nationality and university professors by profession, currently employed in the Netherlands. Her new position, for which she is applying for a visa now, is in Scotland. She cannot have her old job back, and I do not have a position in Scotland. So we are both foreigners in the countries in which we are employed, and we are (or, rather, will be soon) employed in two different countries. What are some of the immigration issues we need to consider here? [more inside]

Lloyds UK bank account suspneded while I am in the USA!

Hi all, So my UK Lloyds regular bank account was suspended while I was in the USA and now they want me to show up in a local branch. I have spent three days on the phone explaining to them that I cannot because I am in the USA at the moment. They insist that I do and until then all my funds are frozen! Nightmare! It looks like I will have to fly home just to show my face at the branch so I can access my funds. Anyone had anything like this? Do I really have to fly back to the UK just to ID myself? Thank you!

What's broken: shower, tank, pump, thermostat, boiler, or all??

I live in rented accommodation in the UK. The hot water is scaldingly hot. The radiators burn to touch. The shower temperature is hugely unreliable -- scalding or freezing. The landlord is worried that a plumber will rip him off, based on bad experiences in the past, and unwilling to pay to investigate. Can you help me understand what's going on? I'd like to put my landlord's mind at rest regarding plumbers, and set his expectations regarding likely diagnoses and solutions -- and hence cost. I also suspect this situation is wasting energy and hence driving up the cost of heating bills. I'd like to persuade the landlord that fixing it might be a good idea. [more inside]
