My job is transferring me from Chicago to London in the spring. I've certainly got a lot to figure out between now and then (much of which this forum has already been a big help with), but one specific question I have involves the purchase of a new computer. My current MacBook is definitely due to be replaced -- it's six years old, so move or not, I was planning on getting one sometime this year. Does it make more sense to buy one before the move or after?

I'd like to work in London but I have no idea where to start! I'm a British citizen, age 30, but I've grown up in Australia. I'm looking for any kind of work that pays the bills. Policy work would be especially nice (I have some experience there) but temping/office jobs would be fine too. Can you recommend me some agencies and websites where I can start, and also any other hints and tips for first-timers to the London/UK job market!
Thank you!

UK Art Supply filter: I'm an artist in New York, ordering supplies for a project that I will be doing in London next week. I'm trying to order online from UK-based websites as much as possible and have the supplies delivered to the work site, rather than shipping from the US. There are a few things that I'm having a hard time finding... particularly certain kinds of
tape.

UK (and especially London) folks, where should a returning US labor union staffer work in the UK? I’ll be returning to London (location non-negotiable) early next year after almost ten years in the US. I left the UK soon after I graduated (I’ve never held a career job there), and I’ve worked as a labor union staffer in the US, working my way up to positions with a good deal of strategic and management responsibility, but I'm absolutely open to a change...

In a few days I will be staying with friend's family in western France, at a house they own. I will be in the UK the next few days.
Normally I would bring wine or chocolates as a thank you for the accommodation, but France does these much better and cheaper than the UK (I am told). I am Canadian. What could I bring that would still be a great gift, that I could find in London? It should be something like food or drink, and something of benefit to people on vacation. Price about $50. The friends I am visiting are French/Canadian and appreciate quality/luxury

How does UK traffic law work regarding being responsible for speeding tickets for rental cars?
I have received a photo of the car that was rented under my name and that, on the Avis papers, I was the driver. However you cannot make out any kind of face or person driving the vehicle in the "photographic evidence" that the traffic cam took.
In the UK, am I liable for the cost of the fine, regardless of whether the actual driver at that time can be proven from their photo? I.e. because I hired the car, I must pay the fine? Would there be any chance between the Road Safety Unit and Avis that I would be in more trouble if I can't remember if I was the driver at that time, the photo doesn't help, and I don't know who of the people travelling with me was driving at that time either (even though they weren't registered drivers for the rental)?
