I'm interested in starting my own business. I have a simple digital product I'd like to try selling online, with the expectation that it will sell very little but will give me a low cost, low risk way to learn a bit more about running a business. Looking in to it though, it seems almost impossible to figure out how to go about this without falling foul of any laws or regulations. How does anyone start a business in the UK? [more inside]
We've recently started using an online application system at the company I work for and we're trying to set things up fairly so that some hired employees (e.g., in an admin, management, or HR role) can review unsuccessful candidates' and new applicants' files. Are there any protections we should put in place (legally or otherwise) so that new hires or other employees in these privileged roles cannot see the notes on their own applications, the applications and notes of their hiring competition, or applications and notes of fellow new hires? General advice welcome as well, e.g., if there are any potential use cases or other reasons as to why or why not this would be a good idea. We have the ability to fully customise the online application system as we wish. This is in the UK.
My fiancee is planning to move to Chicago at some point later this year--if all goes well with our engagement, of course ;). She has a GDL (law conversion) degree (in addition to non-law undergrad and postgrad degrees) from the UK and is looking for advice, first and foremost, on the "lay of the land" and things to keep in mind in transferring environments. I live in the US and have followed the RIAA/MPAA suits closely. Over the years I have heard British news agencies report such-and-such as being charged with illegal downloading and wondered if that were even possible. [more inside]
I currently attend a top 2 law school in the UK (no prize for guessing which), and am interested in working in the US after I graduate. While I am aware that I will be eligible to take the bar exam in NY and California with a degree from a common law jurisdiction, would my prospects of landing a law firm gig be appreciably augmented if I go for an LLM (or perhaps even a JD) at a US law school? (YNML) We're purchasing a leasehold property in the UK. The lease for this property says "The Demise hereinbefore contained includes the following rights:- ... and the exclusive use of the parking space numbered 1 shown hatched red on the plan ...". Our solicitor has been saying that 'as the right is exclusive this does not form a legal right under common law and as such may be denied by subsequent Landlords.' I don't understand why this is an issue, and as it's held up our move, I would like to understand. Although I've asked my solicitor, I suspect Mefites can give me a clearer answer! BDSM filter: A friend in Northern England wants to use a private home full of kinky equipment to do stuff like rope workshops, hire for small private parties, a venue for munches, and couples hire. What's the most that is possible within the law, without requiring a license? I'm aware of groups such as bdsm and the law on fetlife but am having trouble sifting signal from noise. [more inside]
I have been told that publicly funded Universities in the UK are bound by certain requirements when they want to hire for a position: for instance, that the job be advertised for a certain amount of time, and the competition be open and on the merits of the candidates. What *exactly* are these requirements, and where can I read about them? I'm thinking specifically of Lecturer-type posts, if that makes any difference.
I moved to the UK earlier this year for work, and have recently bought a Vespa scooter. I had an unrestricted motorcycle license in the US (Illinois, specifically). I'm in the process of getting the Vespa insured, and am applying for my provisional license (with the aim, of course, of taking CBT and getting a full license down the road.) As I understand it, I'm technically allowed to ride on my US license for the first 12 months I'm here. I also understand that, were I a British citizen acquiring his first motorcycle license, I would not be allowed to carry a passenger until I'd passed the test for a full (not provisional) license. Does that rule apply to me as well? Also, do the 'L' plate restrictions change at all for my situation? [more inside]
I am an American national with indefinite leave to remain in the UK and have been here since 2005. I am registered self employed as a dominatrix - yes they seem to have a category for this at Inland Revenue - and it seems that in order to naturalise as a British citizen, I will need to send the Home Office a statement of accounts with my application! So there's no hiding it (not that I would want to). My question is - will being an out sex worker make them pause at granting me citizenship, because of the good character requirement?
What are the legal implications if I start a blog documenting the poor service my property manager provides, and asking others to share their opinions of this firm? I can speak for the factual accuracy of my own experiences (I have their letters and invoices etc, as well as my responses), but what about others? [more inside]

And, if so, can anyone recommend a good one in the UK, London area?
A friend of mine was offered a flat screen at his place of work to use in conjunction with his laptop computer. He declined because he is quite happy to use his laptop, and his desk space is at a premium. Later, he was given a piece of paper to sign waiving all rights to sue the company for an injury that might occur as a result of using his laptop. Would such a document actually carry any legal authority? [more inside]
