I'm about to move one of my computers to Linux, but I don't know much about the various distributions. Can you recommend resources that compare the strengths and weaknesses of the various distributions, so that I can assess any relevant tradeoffs?

I am used to Mac OS X and I really like the default fonts, the way anti aliasing works and the default theme as well.
Now I am working with Ubuntu 8.10 on other machine, but it kind of frustrates me visually.
I'd like to ask general tips on how could I make Ubuntu more visually appealing. I have found a couple of
links about how to make fonts smoother.
That improved a bit, bit still not there yet. I'd like to hear from you what font you use, themes, etc...
So, what are the tricks you use to make your Ubuntu install beautiful?

I recently lost a raid array on a ubuntu 8.04 server forcing me to rebuild it from scratch and/or restore data from backup. (I have copies of /var, /etc, and /home) The problem is I can't seem to rebuild the server so that it works exactly the way it did before, this is killing me!! (fyi... I inherited this system). My specific problem seems to be with Samba. I'm looking for help in two different ways... help 1) either figure out how to restore this system with what I've got backed up. Or fix samba so it works. See details below:

For the purposes of using Amarok on my laptop, which can not be told that my music folder is located in a shared folder on my media center (as far as I can see), I need to permanently mount the shared music network folder in Ubuntu. They don't make it very easy it seems. Have to use a bunch of comand line editing to get it done? Come on Ubuntu!

So i partitioned my pocket 320gig USB drive and installed the lastest ubuntu. My intent was to use it like a live CD to virus scan windows XP worksations (to avoid imaging). Odd thing though, I can not access any data on this drive when running WinXP. in windows, it tells me that the drive isn't formatted. I checked the drive and see the Ubuntu partition, the original partition and a small 1gig partition I assume was created during the Ubuntu install. Grub loads when I restart the machine and boot from USB and Ubuntu runs fine.
Is my data irrevocably lost? I was thinking of deleting the MBR, but I figure that'd just make the drive useless. ideas?

I'm using Terminal (Ubuntu 8.04x64) right now to overwrite a 500g external hd with random information. There's been no action aside from a blinking cursor (by itself on a line, not in front of any prompt) since I entered the command yesterday afternoon:
[
sudo dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/sdc bs=8m]
I understand it's going to take a while to finish. In the meantime, is there any way to monitor the progress of the operation?
