Boot ubuntu to the commandline

Due to my work laptop dying, I installed the gui on my Ubuntu 11.10 server. No biggie except that it seems to have messed up the video mode. My LCD just displays an error. How can I get around this? [more inside]

How to get my Dell Ubuntu server to boot from a different drive?

I have an Ubuntu server. It's a Dell PowerEdge with a PERC 6 RAID controller. I'm trying to get it to boot to a different drive, and grub doesn't seem to be cooperating - it appears to attempt to boot to the correct volume and partition and then bonks out when mounting /proc - what gives? Mount Fail, help me climb it.

Dear PC, I swear I won't ever mess with your partitions again if you just this once...

Oh crap! While attempting to clear, reformat, and merge my ubuntu partition with my primary NTFS Windows partition, I somehow managed to give the GRUB boot-loader brain damage. Now I can't boot in to either partition need to fix this before my girlfriend comes home and sees that I've rendered her computer useless. [more inside]

Boot Problems with CD Drive

My Dell Inspiron 5100 Laptop will not boot from any burned Live CDs, and in Windows XP the CDs appear blank. Other computers will load from the same LiveCDs, and my laptop will boot from the Dell diagnostic CD that came with the computer. Please help. [more inside]
