I have a new job that requires a lot of continuous, fast typing on a laptop. I'm already experiencing repetitive-strain problems with my left shoulder blade -- a chiropractor did some work on it but it's still bothering me and I don't want stuff like this to be a deterrent to my ability to do the job. It's an independent contractor gig, so I'm responsible for all ergonomics decisions and medical costs I might incur. Sort me out, MeFi. Give me some very specific actions I can take that won't cost much money. [more inside]
Why was I hearing random, constant clicks when I ran audio thru my Mackie PROFX8 8-Channel Mixer into my Macbook Pro? The clicks sounded very much like the sound of someone pecking at a typewriter in the distance. The feed left the mixer at the Main Right/Main Left Balanced outputs thru a cable that then combined both channels into a single unbalanced stereo mini. Unorthodox, granted, but I've never encountered that kind of "typing" noise before. Any advice on what was causing it and how to avoid it?

I'm a writer with a (hopefully temporary) condition that prevents me from typing much. I need someone to turn my handwritten edits/revisions into updated Word files, so I don't have to type. Where and how do I find this person? [more inside]
Putting two spaces after a period/?! is out of favor now, and apparently has been for a while depending on who you ask. How did you break yourself of this habit? Even typing this I was thinking about it and still had to go back and correct each one! [more inside]
I am super hard on keyboards. I have killed 2 fancy ergonomic ones and more cheap keyboards than I can count in the past 4 years so I have decided to splurge on a nice mechanical keyboard, that can hopefully stand up to my destructive ways, well that and I really like the clicky clacky sensation when I type that you don't seem to get on modern keyboards. I have read various forums & even an old question on the green and all I have done is confuse myself so looking for some suggestions. Thanks. [more inside]
My right hand and arms have slowly been developing an ache or cramp over the last two weeks that gets worse when I use a trackpad or smartphone. (I'm right-handed.) I'm also starting a software engineering internship tomorrow. What should I do to keep my hands okay? [more inside]
Up until a week or two ago, my phone's predictive text function predicted not just which word I was typing, but also which word I was likely to type next. It used an algorithm which not only paired common words, but which (and this is the important bit) also learned which words I used frequently. Now that's not happening any more. Predictive text is still working, but it doesn't seem to be learning my vocabulary any more. How can I make this work again? [more inside]
I have to spend all day on the computer for work, and a lot of writing is involved. Lately, I've noticed twinges of numbness in my fingers, and I'm worried it's the beginning of carpal tunnel syndrome. I'm trying to be careful about good posture and taking breaks, but I would really love to stop typing so much. Is there any software out there now that will take dictation from me and actually do a decent job?
What am I doing that makes my computer suddenly read all inputs as though the Shift key were pressed, and how do I make it stop? [more inside]
My hands and my wrists really hurt doing any activity that engages them, I don't see my doctor for until December 29th, and I have things I need to get done involving my hands. Looking for some ideas/short term solutions to keep functioning until I see the doc next in a couple weeks. [more inside]
I would like to send Christmas letters, including one to a girl I like. There's only one problem: I have terrible handwriting. It's really, really bad. I've worked on improving it my whole life, but my motor skills just can't seem to pick up on the knack of writing properly; my words honestly look like the scribbles of a child, and unless I take care are sometimes illegible to other people. For this reason I much prefer typing things, but I feel that much of the sentimentality is lost if a letter is typed. Is there any way for me (through cool program, font, or other method) to send something that's typed that gives the same impact a written letter would? [more inside]
Given a word, is there anyone who has come up with a metric for type-ability? Like "feed" is easier to type than "quit"? Is there some term I should be googling?

I love the idea of doing everything electronically - easy backups, filing, being able to search, etc. Problem is, I much prefer the tactile experience of writing on paper. I have this delusion that I'm not able to be my "full creative self", whatever that means, unless it's with pen/pencil. I know that's just procrastination/laziness talking, but I am curious: did you struggle with this? Did you find something that made the typing process as enjoyable as writing, or did you just train yourself out of wanting to physically write? [more inside]
My Mac's 10-year-old bluetooth keyboard is acting up, and I'm pretty sure that it's death is imminent. I'd like to find a replacement, but Apple long ago stopped making full-sized wireless keyboards -- what are some good alternatives that exist in 2013? [more inside]
Based on this thread, touch typing has changed people's lives. I have been watching my fingers type for more than forty years, so I may not be able to make the change, but I'm willing to put forth a good effort. What software-based training program is likely to be effective to help an adult fast finger-typist become a fast(er?) touch typist?
I've tried a number of times to learn to touch type properly - usually about this time of year - but it never 'sticks'. I'm mid 30's, and it's really starting to bug me. [more inside]

How do most people type here ? (And on the internet in general?) Are most people touch-typers? Do people get trained at school these days? I use about three fingers on each hand but am pretty fast nevertheless. I have seen a lot of "bashers" and "peckers" in my time. I am just wondering what the "norm" is these days.
A friend is a writer and journalism major who types a lot every day. Yesterday they noticed that the right hand is mis-hitting some of the keys, causing spelling errors. No other problems or symptoms, and right hand only. My friend just turned 57, and is physically active and fit- softball, yoga, walking. Curious what could be causing this very annoying problem

I recently bought a SteelSeries 7g and I just love it. My only gripe is that it's wired... I've looked around on the net for a wireless mechanical keyboard (ie. one with clicky keys) but no luck. Does anyone know of something like this, whether bluetooth or RF-linked? Otherwise, would it be possible/feasible to mod my 7g with the components from a wireless or BT keyboard?
