I'm a huge fan of Twitter and surprised how quickly they're going to IPO from the announcement just a few weeks ago (the IPO is supposed to happen tomorrow). I have no idea where to start, when to try and do this, how the process works for a layman. Is there any easy way to buy a couple hundred shares of the stock on the first day? [more inside]
There used to be a service that took your stared tweets, and make them into a book. I can't find it now and it would be awesome for all the family stories and comments I've saved over the years... [more inside]
Once upon a time it was pretty easy to access twitter feeds in an rss reader. But a few months back ( in June I think ) twitter stopped supporting the rss api so now it's not so simple. What options are available for accessing twitter through rss? In the extended explanation I'll list what I have tried so far. Thanks. [more inside]
My old, dormant Twitter account recently started sending out direct messages to everyone on my list with spammy stuff. This happened within the last hour, and I just deactivated the account. The password for the Twitter account is different than the password for the email account that I set it up with. The password on the Twitter account hadn't been changed, and no tweets were sent from it (only DMs). Is this likely a third party app jacking the Twitter account (and therefore isolated) or should I be concerned about the establishing email account as well? I ask because this is my primary gmail account.
Twitter and Tumblr feature trending or hot tags/news. But is there a way to find the most read/shared news story associated with a certain tag/news topic? [more inside]
Summify (not to be confused with Summly) was purchased by Twitter and shutdown almost two years ago. I still miss it. News.me was touted as a viable alternative, but it no longer seems to be in active development and none of the alternatives seem to offer Summify's top-notch filtering/curation. [more inside]
I don't have cable or the ability to stream live TV, but I watched the first two seasons of Breaking Bad on DVD and have been following a lot of info about it via various podcasts and have my own predictions. Tonight during the series finale, I'd like to follow the show plot-point-by-plot-point live during the show. Are there any twitter feeds that are likely to do this? Spoilers are A-OK and expected and desired. Nothing held back. Who should I be following tonight? Also, what time does it start? (I'm in the Central Time Zone US.)
I am about to launch a project that I think will get a lot of attention. I have personal/business social media accounts already, but do I need a second set of social media accounts just for this project to keep my personal/business ones from getting cluttered?
Why does each YouTube video have a special 'Share this video' link, at the http://youtu.be/ domain? Is there a meaningful difference between using the link provided and just copying the URL from the address bar? [more inside]

My husband and I have recently started using smartphones. We have each installed the Twitter app, and it worked great for several days. This morning, any link we click diverts us to a site called Linkbucks. Has this happened to any of you, and do you know of any fixes? We do have the pre-loaded, free version of Lookout on our phones and it has not helped so far. [more inside]

I have a photograph in my Flickr feed that has proved very popular on Tumblr and other young-person social networking sites. I have a personal connection to the picture and so, when I see it posted without credit, I have been enthusiastically submitting DMCA takedown notices to remove the image. Yesterday I saw it as someone's Twitter avatar. They had cropped out most of the photo and added a stupid mustache to the picture. I submitted a DMCA notice; Twitter's response was to ask me if it didn't fall under fair use. I don't think it does. [more inside]
I've used Tweetdeck on my Android phone for as long as I can remember, but I read they were phasing it out a few months ago (since Twitter bought them) and as of lunchtime yesterday my app has finally stopped updating. Any suggestions on what the best app out there is? I'd like it to be free, but don't mind paying a few bucks for a really good app. The phone is a Samsung Galaxy Nexus, so it should be able to download anything.
For a Twitter account I'm thinking of setting up (tweeting interesting things I pick up on a police scanner, basically), I want the ability to quickly tweet from a map interface, with the tweet being geotagged with a chosen location. Does a service like this exist? [more inside]

I'm curious about a phenomenon I've observed many times on Twitter. In the reply threads of tweets by Justin Bieber and other pop celebrities, you see a enormous amount of nearly content-free chatter by superfans ("Follow me please", "I love you", "OMG", etc). What's puzzling is that in the majority of cases, despite their inane content, the accounts posting this stuff seem to have enormous numbers of followers (many are 5000 or 8000+, more than many actual public figures), despite only following a modest few hundred accounts themselves. Where are all these followers coming from? Is this some sort of Belieber-specific phenomenon?
Seeking replacement for Echofon for Firefox. This little Twitter client sat unobtrusively as a button in your browser and would pop up a handy, no-frills pane to check recent tweets. Unfortunately, it no longer works. I'd love something similarly lightweight that integrates with your browser (I use Firefox for Mac), though if a browser-integrated client is impossible to find, I'd welcome any suggestions for good, simple Mac-compatible Twitter clients. Thank you! [more inside]
I need to monitoring a few social media accounts (on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram) for a short period of time. Is there a service I can use that will give me a feed of just these select accounts, without giving me a feed of all the accounts I follow/am friends with? [more inside]
The powers that be where I work are reluctant to use Twitter because they think anything they tweet will get spammed. Help me convince them they're off the rails on this! [more inside]
Twitter is breaking shit because they hate their users/want to monetize. I used to use Tweetdeck to send out coordinated facebook and twitter posts for work; I'd like to avoid using two different programs (doubling my work). HootSuite seems close, but for semi-irrelevant reasons, not currently an option. I run a Mac. What are the best options out there?

For a while I've been using Echofon as my Twitter client. It's got some things I don't like, but I always assumed they'd eventually get fixed. However, Echofon has discontinued support for the desktop client, opting instead to focus on mobile platforms. I'm looking for a replacement, since some features in Echofon have inexplicably stopped working and obviously won't be fixed. Anyone got suggestions on a replacement? [more inside]
How useful is Twitter these days? I work in an advocacy-type job at the intersection between law, politics and a giant, sometimes heavily regulated industry. I really need to strengthen my connections, and I'd also like to raise my organization's profile online. Social media is obviously one part of the arsenal -- but is Twitter a worthwhile starting point? I only have so much time in the day to devote to this, and I could instead focus my efforts on blogging for a moderately well-trafficked niche group blog. I'm not so much interested here in driving traffic to our website, but rather to entering more fully into the conversation online.

So, I've recently inherited the community and social media role for the company I work for. II am trying to get a handle on web content and which content has, overall, the best stickiness. Sites like YouTube, Tumblr, Flickr are, as near as I can tell, mostly visual. Blog and microblogging sites like Wordpress and Twitter are word based. Quora, Reddit and Metafilter are information sharing communities. Podcasts and music sites like MySpace or Soundcloud are, for the most part, sound focused. And then you have sites like Facebook and Google+ that are trying to combine the best of all of them. A team from our office is heading over to a number of China cities and they want to be active on social media the whole time to promote it. But given that China blocks twitter and Facebook, I need some workarounds. Is there a client like Hootsuite or tweet deck or buffer that ISN'T blocked? And what are my other options? Does instagram work? What about Linkedin?
I have been combing the social networks I use trying to find a way to link two of them. It's not a big list; Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Soundcloud, and Wordpress. I know about IFTTT and Hootsuite, but I'd prefer to not use third party apps if possible. Facebook and Twitter of course, connect to almost everything. But I'm also trying to figure out how stuff I upload to Soundcloud can be posted on LinkedIn. And likewise, I can't get LinkedIn posts to show up my Facebook business page. Is it just not possible w/o 3rd party apps that will make posts I don't need? If there is a way, can somebody tell me?

I'm really tired of social media; I've grown to find all of it (FB, twitter, etc.) endlessly boring. Prolly not going to shut it off altogether. [more inside]

I read this somewhere filter. A few years back, I read a very detailed description of a well known journalist (working at Reuters, or AP or something - it might have been Anthony De Rosa) who explained in great detail how he managed his Twitter and other (social) information streams to find original sources and be on top of breaking news. I would like to find that specific article again. [more inside]

I've created a promotional video for my website, which is currently listed as a Metafilter project called Conversus. The purpose of the video is to show how I can (with Google Translate) translate any conversation from most languages to most languages. I want to do this as part of the interview services I offer. In this video, I explain how this works by creating people using synthetic voice software, I give them names and I interview them. Since they are not real, am I being unethical if in a Twitter post, I say, "Rodney, Svetlana, Ying, Niles, Maria, Bridget, Nanette & Hassan talk about being interviewed."? I've been a journalist for a long time and ethics is kind of hard wired in, so I'm just checking a broader opinion base.
