Where to find an unfinished wooden tray in Minneapolis/St. Paul?

Where to find an unfinished wooden tray in Minneapolis/St. Paul? I'm looking for a decent, unfinished wooden tray so I can lay mosaic on the surface and then finish it to match my mother's kitchen. I want a decent sized tray (about 17" x 14" or more)

I already have checked JoAnn's craft section and Michael's (In Apple Valley/Burnsville if that makes a difference), but the ones they had were too small and the wood used was very thin and balsa-like (far too weak to support tiles), and seemed strictly for decorative purposes. Whereas I want one that can actually be USED to carry things.

I plan to check Mosaic on a Stick tomorrow and Clay Squared doesn't seem to sell wooden surfaces, just tiles and whatnot. Are there any stones that I've left unturned locally?

I already found some shops on the internet as a last resort, but I have a thing about touching and holding stuff before buying (personal quality control).

Biology Teacher Certification in Minneapolis-St. Paul

Want to become a high school biology teacher in the Twin Cities (Minneapolis-St. Paul). The problem seems to be that no school offers this certification. In my mid-forties, I am looking to become a high school biology teacher in Minnesota (I have undergrad and grad degrees in biology). The only program I've found so far is at the U of Minn and runs on a cohort scheme, meaning I can't even start until Fall 2009. Life's too short, I'm too old and too broke.

So far, every other school in the area has proven to be highly christian and highly averse to certifications that might lead to teaching evolution, i.e. no biology.

Are there any sane, rotating admission programs to obtain a high school biology teaching certificate within 100 miles of the Twin Cities? I'm particularly interested in anyone's personal experience with these programs.

Taipei comes from a big family, apparently.

Browsing through the ever-informative Wikipedia, I stumbled across something bizarre: Taipei, Republic of China has a ton of sister cities, including every Central American capital and a surprising number of very major American cities. Why does Taipei have such an aggressive city-twinning program? Is it related to the Republic of China's status being in international limbo, or to the former close relationship between Chiang Kai-Shek and the United States?

Curl-savvy stylists in the Twin Cities?

I am looking for a hair stylist in Minneapolis/St. Paul who is good with curly hair, including color, and will tell me what will look good on me. My last stylist was awesome. She was very good at suggesting cuts and colors that she thought would work for my fine, moderately curly hair and she was almost always right. She stopped cutting hair, though, so I had to move on. I started seeing another stylist at the same salon and she's very nice but last night she murdered my hair. I can't even tell what is wrong with it exactly, but I know it's not good and I think it's because she didn't take my hair texture into account. I don't even want to go back to her to get it fixed. I'd prefer someone in the east metro but if they're that good, I'll go anywhere.

Selling a book from the middle of nowhere?

Help on how to sell a really awesome rare book my wife and I found at a library sale. While perusing our college's library sale (all books $1 or less), we came across a book my wife had been looking for for about 10 years: Annie Allen, by Gwendolyn Brooks. This book is very, very rare -- the lowest price on Alibris is for a volume that, judging by the description, is all but falling apart with no dust jacket, and it's listed at $80. Copies with tattered dust jackets go for upward of $250.

Well, this copy is pristine. Insanely so. In spite of being at a library sale, it must have been donated since there are no library markings of any kind. Other than a couple of tiny tears to the jacket, it's perfect, and the book itself (not the dust jacket) literally shows zero indications of wear.

This brings me to the problem. We both wish we could keep the book, but selling it would be better for the time being, given our status as poor college students. We unfortunately have NO IDEA where and how to sell it and get a fair price. We listed it on ebay (you can see the auction here, not because I expect mefi to have a bunch of big spenders but so you can see the quality of the book) here. As you can see, though, we've gotten no bids, which I somewhat expected: Ebay is a terrible place for rare books, and they go for far below their value, especially if they're a niche item.

So how do I sell it? I don't have a seller account on alibris or abebooks, nor do I have a bunch of other books to sell, and I think anyone would be dubious about a seller claiming to have -- as their only book for sale -- a rarity like this.

We live about 3.5 hours from the Twin Cities, which would be the nearest place we could take it to a bookshop to sell it. Does anyone know of a good place, or is this just going to lead to us getting royally ripped off? Is there another way to do this that we're just not thinking of? Help us, o ye gods of rare bookitude!

Twin Cities Turtle-spotting spots

My wife loves Turtles. Can anyone tell me where best to go, in the Twin Cities area, to see turtles in their natural habitat? We're looking for (Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA) metro area parks, rivers, lakes, etc.; where we have a good chance of spotting wild turtles basking. While we're on the topic, any tips about the times of day or of year that are most favorable for spotting turtles will also be most welcome.

Restaurants and Hiking in Twin Cities

What are good restaurants and hiking trails in the twin cities area (for a visiting Houstonian to go to)? My aunt is going to be visiting us in the Twin Cities for a week. She will be staying with my parents in Highland Park (I myself now live in Minneapolis). So far, we have some ideas for what to do, so I don't need general 'things to do in the Twin Cities,' which has already been asked anyhow. She has told my parents that she would like to go hiking at some point, so I could use some suggestions for good hiking trails nearby. They're not looking to really leave the Twin Cities area, so within a 30-45 minute drive from Saint Paul would be good. Also, my parents would like to take her to eat somewhere that has food she will not be able to find in Houston. If you've read the thread mentioned above, you'll see that I obviously am recommending Punch Pizza, but I'd like some more ideas. I'm looking for anything that is available here, but not in Houston if you happen to be familiar with both areas, or just food in the Twin Cities that is absolutely superb and of a quality that will be hard to come by anywhere else.

Best (luxury) Apartments in the Twin Cities? Moving to the Minneapolis area in a month, with no housing set up yet. I plan on rolling in on a Saturday with a UHaul and signing a lease.
Best gay bar in the Twin Cities metro area, Minnesota? To clarify: my mid-tour leave from Afghanistan* is coming up and I need to get laid with a fierceness. I grew up in Minneapolis but came out in Madison so I really know nothing about the Cities scene. I'm halfway between musclebear and fatbear, and not really effeminate at all (although I don't mind effeminate fags). I'm in my mid-20s and don't really like sleeping with anyone much younger or older than me (think 3-4 years either way).

I know this is a pretty predatory question but I have had zero dick since I joined the Army in May '05 and it is wearing me down. Thanks in advance.

Looking for personal recommendations of quiet coffeehouse-type study spots in the Twin Cities. With the Winter Olympics in full swing, I am no longer able to withstand the temptation of the television in my room. Free wi-fi is a must, late (11pm or 12am) hours on weekdays is a bonus. Anywhere in Minneapolis or St. Paul will work, although the closer to downtown Minneapolis or the Macalaster/St. Thomas area (Grand and Snelling in St. Paul) is preferred. Some local joints I've already found that I enjoy:
Dentist in the Twin Cities?

DentistFilter continues: Recommendations for a good dentist in the Twin Cities? I'm currently in need of rather extensive dental work, especially replacement for a mostly-missing incisor (but also several cavities and a root canal or two, I'd imagine). Since it's my incisor, of course, I'd like to find a dentist who will take proper care of it and won't be too condescending about the state of my teeth. (Is reasonably-priced too much to ask for too?)

I'm thinking that some kind of a little alternative school, perhaps in the inner city, would be a good place to look?
I'm an electrical engineering student at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, and I'm looking for a local brick and mortar electronic components retailer.
Anyone I've ever talked to mail orders pretty much everything. Mail ordering is great, especially with 1/2 day turnaround times with Digikey, but I'd love to be able to walk up and down aisles.

TalkCinema experiences?

If you have subscribed to or otherwise attended Talk Cinema showings (preferably in the Twin Cities) would you recommend it to others? There are two aspects to this question: First, generally speaking, have people had good experiences with TalkCinema? And, second, is there anything about the regional showings (remember, I'd be attending in Edina, MN, rather than NYC or LA) that is notable? The website makes the series sound pretty cool, but $14 is pretty steep for the upper midwest.

nytimes crossword reruns?

Does the NY Times ever rerun its crossword puzzles? I started doing the NYT crossword today (no. 0531) in my local paper and it seemed oddly familiar. After filling in some more squares, I KNEW that I had done this crossword before, and within the past two months. I figured it was just a mistake, but the other local paper has the same repeat puzzle. Would they actually repeat crosswords in the Times and not expect obsessive puzzlers to notice? I haven't been a junkie long enough to really know. And if anyone who gets the NY Times could confirm that this is not just a mistake in both local papers, that would be great. The clue for 1 Down is "warhead weapon, briefly."

Trustworthy financial planner?

Can anyone recommend a trustworthy, reasonable financial planner in the Twin Cities area? We are looking for a financial planner, but are having a hard time deciding. We have looked at all the big names, but think we are missing out on the independent financial planners. There are load of sites listing questions to ask a planner but those questions seem quite general. Does anyone have any personal recommendations, or specific advice on what to look for?

Where can I buy a good suit in the Twin Cities?

After getting by without needing a suit all through college, I'm finding that that dog won't hunt in the real world. And my suits from high school all don't fit. Where can a person buy a good suit, as inexpensively as possible, in the Twin Cities? Are there any secret discount stores I can go to? I know about Mens Wearhouse but that's about it. I walked in there and was shocked to find how expensive they are, and I was baffled by how many choices I had. Which brings me to my second question: what's a normal price range for a good suit, and what should I look for in one?
