I liked the first two seasons of Sons of Anarchy, but I think Season 3 is aggressively stupid and I'm begrudgingly finishing it today. Should I keep going or stop here? [more inside]
I've come down with a full-on flu, and despite my best efforts, it doesn't seem to be going anywhere. I'm basically couch-ridden and very, very feverish. Help me find media to consume that won't weave itself into my horrific fever dreams. [more inside]
Can you recommend a sound system to hook up to a TV, our phones, and that also has a radio? [more inside]
What do you consider the most underrated TV show to air during the past year? [more inside]
My MiL is coming to stay with us in late spring. She's older and speaks no English. So to make the days tolerable while we're at work and her grandson is in school, I need to get TV set up for her. She's a bilingual Hungarian from Romania. Some of her very favorite shows are in Hungarian, her native tongue. But she still likes to watch the news and whatnot from home, in Romanian. What are the current options for shows from these countries together or separately? [more inside]
Please help me find this obscure comedic anime I watched ~7 years ago. It's definitely not Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei, but extremely similar in terms of comedy and characters. (Spoilers inside) [more inside]
Ok, so I posted this question a while back. I got some great responses and insight, however, I still haven't decided if I should purchase an Apple TV. [more inside]
I'm trying to find a humorous commercial for Levi jean that I haven't seen for years. Difficulty: 90's Australian TV. Google is failing me and this is driving me crazy!! Details inside... [more inside]
My parents love to look at and show off stuff from their 200+GB photo collection on the big TV in the living room. They currently use a last-gen AppleTV which works fairly well once you actually get into the folders list, but getting there sometimes takes 20-30 minutes with just the "Loading" spinning circle. Additionally, there is no way to zoom in and pan around on a photo, a feature they would love to have. Would the new Apple TV improve things? [more inside]
I work for a small, community-owned, fiber optic Internet and telephone start-up and we want to provide customers — and potential customers — with options on how to use our services to (legally) watch their favorite programming. Looking to the hive mind for suggestions. [more inside]
My company is looking to deploy flat screen TVs in all our branches. We have 15 branches in 5 states with no IT staff at any but 2 of them. [more inside]
My kids and I Iove "Good Mythical Morning," and watch it every night. For feminist reasons, I'd like us to additionally watch something just as funny and in the same style -- but with women hosting it. Suggestions? [more inside]
This weekend I played one of the Jackbox family of games. I think my family would love them and I'd like to give/have it available to play while we're all home for Christmas. Looks like I might have some technical issues--I need some guidance, please! [more inside]
There was a TV show, early 80s, probably on PBS. Short subject, less than 20 minutes, squeezed in between shows. It was all about Emerging Future Tech! Like microcomputers, art in tech, digital stuff. The host was Laurie Anderson. It has FALLEN off the FACE of the EARTH. [more inside]
In the past few years, most of my mainstay pop culture sites for movie reviews and TV recaps and reviews have shut down or declined drastically in appeal. I need suggestions for replacements to check out that aren't defunct, or sites I already know about that don't fit the bill; I'm not expecting a voluble community, as I'm happy with just good site writers with a good grasp on pop culture and an intelligent perspective. So not AV Club, not Fanfare, not Vulture or TVLine or Entertainment Weekly but somewhere new; a lot more detail follows. [more inside]
Clémence Poésy plays Elise Wassermann, the French detective. Several scenes showed her "going home" to a set of silver buildings (by the water?) in a French city. Can anyone recognize these? The city or the area or the buildings themselves? I want to find info on them.
Help! I have a scene from a movie (or possibly a TV show) stuck in my head, and I cannot remember from where it comes. A small country, whose primary export is stinky cheese, is at war with its neighbors. I'd thought it was The Mouse That Roared, but that's about wine, not cheese. [more inside]
My parents are staying with me for approximately six weeks while my dad undergoes treatment for cancer. We don't always get along especially well, and he's starting to feel a little bit bored/stir-crazy. We're looking for activities/entertainment we can enjoy as a family, especially movies and TV shows that tick all the right boxes. [more inside]
The PC, DVD changer, HDTV, receiver and 5.1 speakers, theoretically, were properly set up. They're not working, and other configurations aren't working! How can I get them working together? [more inside]
What was the name of movie set in early eighties about a bully and old black man in project building. The bully antagonizes all of the elderly residents. At the final boss scene, the old black man - the protagonist - creates some locking arm braces. He fights the bully and defeats him with a bear hug and locks the braces together. Then the cops come. And this kid about 8 years old started banging his forearms together like the old bully used to do. It was an afterschool special type thing.
On TV's Hannibal, how would you characterize the exterior of Hannibal's house? Architecture-wise, but also history-wise? A UK friend would like to describe/discuss it in her fanfic, but is unfamiliar with US architecture/history. Images inside!: [more inside]
In the late 70s or early 80s, I saw a TV show that involved a kid who wasn't supposed to open a glowing door. The kid reached for the door... he was about to open it... and at that point, I got freaked out and ran out of the TV room. My sense of terror makes it one of my more vivid childhood memories, and to this day, I often wonder what was behind that door. From these vague details, can you help me figure out what the show was so I can finally find the answer? [more inside]
Hi there Brilliants, I'm looking for examples of identity thieves in movies, tv, literature, comics, etc. Or for articles about techniques these thieves use. Even something like "Catch Me If You Can" is helpful. I'm looking for techniques that these thieves use. I am not a thief! I am just doing some research for a story to help out a student. Thanks so much for your help!
The recent FPP on Aziz Ansari, made me wonder exactly how much Indian Americans are under represented on television. According to the 2010 census, Indian Americans are roughly 0.9% of the U.S. population, but what percentage of TV actors are Indian American? The only statistics I was able to find on representation of minority groups lumped all minorities together. Can anyone point me to a good source for this type of information?
Help, help, I've dried up my supply of TV shows! What are some great, possibly under-the-radar TV shows that are heavily plot-driven? (That is to say, not episodic at all.) [more inside]
I just got a one-week Nielsen TV diary in the mail for November 5-12 -- including a crisp $1 bill to help grease the wheels. Yay! Unfortunately most of the shows I watch regularly, like Silicon Valley, Louie, Key & Peele, and Rick and Morty are on hiatus (or over) right now. I'm already planning to catch Last Week Tonight and Colbert's Late Show, but what other worthy television (that doesn't require a lot of prior familiarity) should I give my coveted (if minuscule) 18-34 ratings boost to? [more inside]
My husband left me out of the blue and my heart is hellishly broken and I am trying desperately to make the hours pass until it hurts less. I am looking for recommendations for tv or movies. I can't do too much violence or suspense or romance. I like sci-fi and fantasy, I like nature, quirky things and strong women. I watched a bunch of Elementary until it all seemed the same, then I watched Blindspot but I'm all caught up, then I watched The Lost Room and then rewatched Firefly for the umpteenth time, and Lucy, then some of Misfits. I read Ms. Marvel, I listened to the podcasts The Message and a bunch of The Black Tapes. I have Eat Pray Love cued up and then Howl's Moving Castle. I don't know if this is enough info to go on, but I need to get through the minutes and thought I'd ask. Maybe I'll watch the first season of Veronica Mars again. Help?
Hi Brilliants! Can anyone point me in the direction of a novel, article, documentary, film, tv show, etc. that is about Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners or S.A.N.E. nurses? I am doing research for a written piece. I'm mostly interested in what their lifestyle is like, any challenges they face, etc. Thanks so much for your help!
I can remember nearly all the details of this episode apart from what show it was and which characters were involved and it's driving me insane! [more inside]
I've always been more of a TV person than a movie person. Now I think I'd like to get more serious with my interest, and really delve into the history and theory of television, both in terms of the shows themselves and the industry behind them. Help me get started with this! [more inside]
Over the past few months I have been watching Gilmore Girls on Netflix for the first time - I never watched while the series was on TV - and for the most part, I have really enjoyed it. However I recently started Season 6 (out of 7) and have not been super pleased with it so far. Given that a revival seems to be in the cards, should I power through? [more inside]
The band Hot Chip recently posted a new video that uses archived footage from the 80's. I have tried in vain to find the original source for the "video dating" footage and the "Kids of Tomorrow" footage. I'm hoping someone on here has better luck/skill than me.
We have no cable and usually don't even know what sports season it is. But my wife is really excited about the Cubs/Mets series for reasons I don't completely understand. She asked me to get the games. Help? [more inside]
I've been a reasonably satisfied Verizon FiOS customer for a number of years, but they seem to be getting stingier with their discounts for existing customers. I've thought about doing the customer retention game again, but I'm not willing to call their bluff and go to another provider. I've read online that some people have had success canceling and signing up again under their spouses' name. Has anyone done this? If so, do they give full new customer discounts? Do you have to cancel service for some number of days, return equipment, etc?
Over the past few weeks our Samsung LCD TV has developed an odd habit after we turn it on. It will cycle on and off quite a few times before finally displaying a picture and sound (yesterday it took 25 minutes to come on). During the cycling the picture, if it displays, will be full of vertical lines (usually green or blue). There is usually no sound, except sometimes it will make a deafening screech that sends the cat running. [more inside]
I got an old rear projection TV for free — it's a 65" Toshiba 65HX83 HD. How can I calibrate this monstrosity? [more inside]

I've got a newish laptop (1.5 yr old, Samsung, Windows 8) that pretty much exclusively is used these days to stream sports to my tv via hdmi. I'd like a slightly more elegant set-up than I currently have, which has it sitting on a little stool next to the tv. [more inside]
I've reached my jerk quota in the real world, so I'm looking for some good TV shows (preferably on netflix or amazon prime streaming) that aren't about jerks. [more inside]
We had a black and white tv set when I was a child. We switched over to color at some point in the early '80s and we, along with tens of millions of other American consumers, never looked back. At some point, I suppose they must have stopped selling black and white tv sets [more inside]

I'm half remembering a comedy sketch, or possibly part of a sitcom but can't remember who it is or the final punchline! The set up is that person A is being increasingly sarcastic but person b doesn't recognise it as such and takes what they are saying as a straight answer. Im pretty sure it's British and Google has turned up a Monty Python sketch or the Big Bang theory (neither of which is what I'm remembering) Thanks Metafilter!
