Seeking ACT-like Prose Fiction and Humanities Pieces

Hi all. I'm tutoring some students for the ACT, and wanted to find some good selections of prose fiction and humanities non-fiction to give them a sense of what they can expect on the reading section of the test. I had lots of ideas for prose fiction, but many seemed to involve something potentially confusing and controversial (abortion in Hills Like White Elephants, Tourette's Syndrome in Motherless Brooklyn, intersex identity in Middlesex) and most of the humanities writing I'm familiar with is high-level academic scholarship that is probably too dense for high school students. Need some help in setting up an informal ESL class

I've been informally tutoring my friends' kids in preparing for the New York State English standardized tests, and my friends have been happy enough with how it's going that they have now proposed another arrangement. They would like me to teach a beginning ESL class for a small group of their business's employees who are struggling with English skills. I would teach a 2-hour class of about 4-5 people once a week. My friends don't know what the going rate for that kind of instruction is in NYC, and I don't either. [more inside]

Please tell me about your experiences as an independent tutor!

I just very recently lost my full-time job, and while I bust my ass looking for a new permanent position, I'll need to find something to keep paying my rent. I have experience tutoring, but only through a large well-known test-prep company. I'd appreciate any advice from Mefites out there who have done private tutoring outside of such companies in the New York City area, especially regarding how you got started. [more inside]

How to charge for essay/general editing?

I have previous tutoring experience (as well as being an Ontario Certified Teacher). I'd like to get back into some tutoring/editing work on the side, but I'm not sure how to charge for what I'm hoping to do. I don't really have the time or the flexibility to offer one-on-one tutoring, so I was hoping to offer "editing online" types of services where someone would email me their work and I'd send it back in x amount of time with corrections, editing suggestions, etc. I've done this in the past for journalists, law students, etc. and it seemed to work well. Here's the problem: how do I set up a reasonable and attractive fee structure for this? [more inside]

Help me find this online Spanish tutoring site

A few months ago I found a certain online Spanish tutoring site I wanted to try out, but now I'm unable to locate it after much Googling. The site (which may have offered languages other than Spanish) had private tutors who conduct sessions via Skype. The main page showed photos and bios of the many available tutors, with star ratings and links to reviews written by students. As I recall, each tutor could set his/her own price. What site might this have been?

Help me teach an informal ESL class on writing?

Hi! I often eat in a certain restaurant, and one of the people who works there asked if I would help her with her writing in English. I am very happy to help, but I have no idea how to do this. She speaks very good English, but she said her writing is very bad. (Her first language is Spanish.) I am meeting with her (and maybe a few of her co-workers) for the first time this week -- any ideas on what we should do? I thought I'd start out with dictation, but any ideas would be much appreciated!

How to informally implement a sliding scale for tutoring services?

I am a math tutor in the walk-in tutoring center at the community college and I get asked by a lot of students if I do private sessions off-campus. I ask $20/hr, which I am told by my colleagues is a perfectly reasonable rate. However I realize that $20/hr is prohibitively expensive for a lot of people at community college, and I know that a lot of people I tutor could afford $30/hr or more. How do I tactfully offer a discount to someone who needs it while charging a higher rate to those who can afford it? [more inside]

Online Math Tutor

I'm a college student who is having some issues really understanding Calculus II, which is a problem as A) I am a Comp Sci major, and B) I need to take Calc III as well, and an advanced math elective as well. I've not heard good things about the school provided tutors, (IE, one is not too skilled at math, and the other is really smug and poor pedagogically) and while I could get a private tutor to help me, I was wondering if there are any good resources for online math tutors, like there are for online language tutoring over Skype. Does a directory of such tutors exist, has anyone had a good experience doing this (maybe even with names?), and how much can I expect to pay? [more inside]

Tutoring student with likely neuro problem isn't getting help. Course of action?

I have been tutoring a teenage student for several months and have observed some unusual things, some of them quite worrying. His parents asked me to help him get his online classwork done (he's in a full-time online high school). He had done next to no work on his own, but it seemed he was capable enough, especially with his math assignments, although he needed a lot of prompting and hand-holding for written work. However, he seemed to have trouble walking (odd gait, sometimes crashes into walls) and couldn't type or write very well (holds a pen very awkwardly, very poor handwriting, types with one finger and literally can't strike two keys at the same time). More worryingly, he can't seem to concentrate and often just stares off into space with his eyelids drooping. This problem seems to be getting worse, and on a recent day he told me he needed to "keep [his] brain absolutely empty to get rid of [his] tiredness." I get the impression his vision may be deteriorating too; he seems to have trouble reading text on his computer screen now, which I had not noticed until recently. [more inside]

Tutoring at university: What to expect and what is expected.

I've just applied for my first university tutoring position (English Literature) and just want to know a bit about what I can expect. Example: how much of the preparation/material is guided by the lecturer of the course you end up tutoring for? Tutoring, like lecturing, seems to be one of those things that have no set route for getting into. While I'm sure the pay rate for tutoring on campus varies from one university (and probably, from one course) to another, is there an applicable standard rate to keep in mind? Any tips and advice will be greatly appreciated.
