I have a non-automatic turntable for the first time (Systemdek IIX), and it has a decent cartridge and stylus on it. Sometimes I leave the room when a record is playing and can't get back before the record ends. How harmful is it for the stylus to be in the (spinning) runout groove for a while? How long is a while? In short, should I always remove the stylus from the record before leaving the room?
I would like to buy a record player as a gift and have a soft budget of $150. Where do I begin? [more inside]
I have a Toshiba SR-F770 turntable, and I'd like to check the cartridge alignment for the first time, but I don't have a copy of the manual and the online sites offering it for download seem sketchy. I read this article but there are a few things I don't understand. [more inside]
I recently inherited a collection of interesting vinyl records, and I want to buy a record player so I can enjoy them. The rest of my audio setup is very digital, and I'm not interested in buying an analog speaker setup. I want to both listen to the records live and record them to digital audio. What kind of record player/turntable should I buy? [more inside]
I have an old late 60's / early 70's console stereo system and the turntable is broken. The thing is a beast and it's impossible for me to bring in somewhere for repair. I've asked everyone I know, but no one knows of any place that makes house calls. [more inside]
Finally, after 10 years I'm visiting new York City again. I guess the city have changed a lot. I'm there for about 10 days, and I'm really into used records. Can MeFi recommend good shops for used (or not) records? Perhaps other shops for turntable lovers? Thanks.
Some moons ago I found an online vinyl record store that seemingly had hundreds of thousands of records for sale for dirt cheap. I cannot seem to find this link in my bookmarks nor can I locate via standard Google searches. Since I lost my hidden gem, I was wondering where everybody else purchases their records. Musical tastes are varied, but mostly lay in the rock genre with jazz and classical right behind. Thanks!
I want to stream music from my turntable to a Sonos. Is it possible to stream from a phono preamp's RCA line out to a Sonos device? Bluetooth transmitters allow me to treat RCA line out as a Bluetooth source, and I believe I can receive this as an audio source on my Android phone, but is it possible to then send this signal on to a Sonos? Or, and this begins to look like an unstable kludge, do I need a Bluetooth transmitter from the phono preamp's line out, and then a Bluetooth receiver at the Sonos device's RCA line in?
So i finally got my turn table hooked back up and got a phono preamp. Awesome! But now i'm having mysterious interference, and receiving radio signals on it(!?!?)... [more inside]
(1) What's a cheap just plain record player that can output via rca cables? (2) Anyone know any good software or apps for doing that on a PC or mac? Just figuring something might already exist to detect different tracks. [more inside]
I just bought a new cartridge for an old record player, installed it as instructed, and sound is only coming out of one channel when playing a record. [more inside]
Hi! Over the weekend, the receiver/speaker combo I use to listen to vinyl and my iPhone (cobbled together from stuff friends didn't want anymore) reached a critical point of sounding crappy. Can you help me find a replacement? [more inside]

I have a Califone 1450K record player. It plays older records beautifully, but it skips around on a few newer ones. Why? [more inside]
I bought a turntable and the sound is a disaster. I think I should just buy a new stylus but is there anything else obvious I might try first? [more inside]
Having spent years spent listening primarily to MP3s and Internet radio, we've been thinking about taking the big, clunky, 90s-era stereo components off of our living room shelves. However, one of those components is a turntable, and we'd like to have the option of occasionally playing our vinyl. We were thinking of a retro-styled portable turntable like this Crosley, but it looks like the non-weighted tonearm and styli aren't so hot. Are there any portable, suitcase-style turntables out there with decent tonearms that we can fit with a good cartridge? Our primary concern is that our records stay in good condition.

BoingBoing posted two recommendations for "good, relatively inexpensive [turntables]...Music Hall's MMF 2.2LE and the Pro-Ject Debut III". They're $499 and $389 respectively. What models would give 80 per cent of the bang for 20 per cent of the buck? I'm a listener, not a DJ.

I would much rather listen to Pandora through the speakers in this record player than my Insignia computer speakers. The record player has an RCA input on the back, so can I just get a 1/8" stereo-to-RCA adapter and plug it in? [more inside]

Please recommend to me a new turntable with the following qualities: sounds great to a non-audiophile, less than €400, available in Europe, has a 33/45 switch and auto-stop at the end of the side, and 33cm or less in depth with the cover off. [more inside]
While listening to some records this evening, I realized that the tracking force on the tonearm was never properly set, and when I checked it on the balance scale, it was crazy high. It's been like this for years. Is the cartridge damaged? [more inside]

Gah! I'm at my wit's end. My brand new Audio Technica AT-LP120 USB turntable was working great, but all of a sudden decided to stop making music and make blaring noise. Listen to this video; is my stylus borked, or is it something else? Tried adjusting everything to no avail. I'm holding on hope that I didn't destroy the stylus though, because occasionally it will make good sound.
Is there anywhere in Vancouver, BC that I could purchase a Crosley suitcase-turntable (or something similar)?

This is likely a dumb question. :) But I have this little microwave. Both the glass turntable and the plastic wheel thing are broken. The microwave itself works fine and heats things up. Short of dripping stuff down into the motor enclosure where the wheel+turntable would normally sit, can I use this microwave normally long-term with no worries? I'm assuming that the only difference is the food would be unevenly heated (I could manually turn), but I just wanted to make sure the turntable motor business wasn't connected to anything else. Replacements would cost more than the microwave at this point.
I am in search of a dedicated speaker system to listen to my LP's. Doesn't have to be too fancy, but I like nice sound. Any help is GREATLY appreciated. [more inside]
What's a good cartridge recommendation for a home listener with a Technics SL-1200? I'm currently using an Ortofon Concorde Nightclub and would like to try something new. Currently listening to a lot of jazz, but there's everything in the stacks. Thanks.
I picked up my first record player (Rega P1) and the sound seems off, like it is being played in a large hall. Every album I play has them same, full bass feel, even when I turn off the subwoofer. What's going on? [more inside]
I plan to put 3 actors on a 6' wooden turntable (which I will build myself) for a video shoot. Have you done or seen something like this before? Is my turntable design workable? Is there a better/simpler/safer way to do it? Details follow. [more inside]
I just bought another record player from a charity shop (this one cost £7). When I got it home i noticed that it doesn't have a plug so i can't turn it on. My theory is that it came as part of a hi-fi and that it plugs into the hi-fi and draws power from that. Is there an adaptor i could get or something?
I bought a record player in a charity shop for £5. turns out it's a vintage beogram 1500. as far as i can tell, the only thing wrong with it is the stylus has fallen off |as evidenced by this|. I've looked around but all i can find is a replacement cartridge for £80. do I need a stylus specific to that turntable or can I use any old stylus? (i'm not overly concerned with sound quality) Also, it occurred to me that, under the same logic that records are better than cds, laserdiscs are better than dvds (you can get any film online so the only reason to buy a physical copy is for the packaging). How easy is it to get hold of cheap laserdiscs and laserdisc players?

I like my vinyl records. I want to make digital files out of them. What are my options ... which don't include a new turntable and, preferably but not absolutely, don't require my computer and stereo to be in the same room? I'm on a Mac.
