What tune did the French bloke play at Allingham's funeral?

At Henry Allingham's funeral, what branch of the services did the French bugler or trumpet player represent, and what piece did he play? Please have a look at/listen to the video here:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8175751.stm

Fast forward to about 3:53 (or indeed listen through to the grandson's very nice speech) where it cuts from the coffin in the church to the pallbearers carrying it out. At that moment a trumpet (or bugle) player starts up and plays a nice short call.

My question is simply:

Who is the bugle/trumpet player, and what call is he playing?

It is NOT the Last Post as we normally understand it in the UK. It is NOT Reveille ditto ditto. Most of the press coverage is simply confused in this area and near-worthless (er, with all due respect etc). I'm hoping that someone actually knows this tune. What's its name? Where (gulp) can I find the sheet music please??

*After* the trumpet player to whom I'm referring, two Royal Marine buglers did indeed play the Last Post. But it's not the same guys, not the same tune. I'm not asking about them.

The bloke I'm asking about is wearing a uniform unfamiliar to me, but the MoD press release and a couple of other sources say he's French. The RM guys are immediately to his L in the closing moments of the video. They are holding standard pattern British military bugles and he's got a more trumpetlike instrument. We can't be sure what it is just on a look so it could be technically either, just a different pattern, but I'm preferring to think of it as a trumpet. (But this is NOT a question about the instrument type, and it is NOT about valves. Honest.)

So, he's French military chap - what is he? That's one thing. (I don't mean I want to know his name, rank and serial number by the way - I mean what service/whatever does he represent? In other words, what uniform is that?

The other thing is - what call does he play? It's not the Last Post. Or specifically, it is not the British Infantry Last Post as played at 99.999% of such events, and as it's about to be played by those two Marines. I don't think it's the cavalry LP either though I do not have it to hand. I think it may be some non-UK tune of equivalent effect. The Last Post begins on a written low C and goes up to the G; this tune starts on that written middle G and goes up to the C above. (Yeah OK it's really in Bb but let's not fall out over that.) What is it? That's the crucial bit of my question.

Can you help please? Are you by any chance a member of the French military? Can I bribe you with croissants for your buglistic knowledge? All suggestions gratefully read! Thanks.

How to start with Balkan brass

Trumpeters: Help me find the right trumpet. Music-lovers: some Balkan music recommendations, please. Although I've only played trumpet once in my lifetime, I was a fairly accomplished trombonist in high school.

Lately I've taken such an interest in Balkan brass music (from personal listening as well as from concerts at club Barbes during my visits to NY) that I've decided I would love to learn how to play trumpet, specifically in a Balkan style. Depending on how much I get into this hobby, I might attend the Guča brass festival next year.

Before I'd consider forming a group (I live in Minneapolis) I'd like to have some chops (of course).

How much would it cost for a good trumpet? I don't need anything particularly fancy, and I know that in this style of music older, sometimes-shabbier instruments are preferred. Can you recommend any brands? Ideally I'd like to spend under $400. Are there any good "starter" trumpets?

Additionally, any recommendations on further listening would be appreciated. I've listened to some Boban Marković as well as more contemporary groups using Balkan brass (Balkan Beat Box, Shantel, etc.)

Thanks!

Bye Bye Baby

Question about dentition and brass instruments After 40 long years, it looks like one of my two remaining baby teeth is giving up the ghost. I asked my hurried dentist how long the process takes from start to finish - he said about a year. I asked if he knew if there were issues playing trumpet through the process - he didn't understand and answered instead the question "can I play trumpet with the post?"

I'm an active amateur player (I gig about a dozen times a year) and I need to know what to expect as far as playing is concerned during the transitions.

I've found a few scant things via google, and a request for participants for some research from the International Trumpet Guild that hasn't been published.

Any anecdotal experience?

Good songs utilizing the trumpet

Please suggest a few songs (rock,punk,alt-country,indie,country, I hate using labels, but please no blues or jazz or classical) that incorporate the trumpet. Doesn't have to be the main ingredient, just part of the song will do. For some reason, when used in this vague context, it sends me into a solemn, pensive place for a while. Thanks.

Musicians in "Mixed Marriage"

My music theory professor challenged our class to identify a married couple where one plays the violin and the other the trumpet. His theory is that the personalities of violin and trumpet players clash. Can anyone name a prominent musical couple where one plays a bowed instrument and the other brass? I would imagine that a saxophone player or drummer would be equally incompatible with a string player.

What's the song in that UK CSI advert?

CSI and CSI Miami reruns are being advertised on a UK Cable station with an urban/hip-hop song filled with a neat trumpet refrain. What is that song? I didn't pay attention to what station(s) was running the advert, but I've had the trumpet bit in my head since I returned to the States. I've tried adtunes.com as well as other advert searches, google, and absolutely no luck.

All I remember:

Seemed to be an advert for reruns, not original airings, of CSI: Las Vegas and CSI: Miami. A yellow graphic would outline the main characters in a freeze frame and display a cutsie gangster nickname, like Gil "The Brain" Grissom or whatever. All during that cool trumpet refrain. There were some muted hip-hop lyrics nearing the end of the commercial, so I think it's urban/hip-hop/rap and not a more traditional brass-instrument genre. Was playing 2 weeks ago on Virgin cable.

Trumpet-playing in the century of the Interwebs

I haven't played trumpet since I was a senior in high school in 1994. Recently, I picked up a good used student horn on eBay and am excited to start practicing again. Trumpet players of the green, I ask you- what are your favorite websites? I've done some rudimentary googling, but haven't found anything that exciting. I know there have to be some fabulous resources out there, and I bet that people playing the horn now frequent some of them. If you're one of those people, what advice do you have?

Also, if you're in the same boat (or were), I'd love to hear your advice on picking up an instrument after a long time away. It was incredibly gratifying to unpack the horn and play a scale right off the bat, but I also know I'll need a lot of work to develop. That's why I want to find some good resources online.

Also also, since I can't sign up for high school concert band again, what are the opportunities for adults to play in public? Again, I'm not so much looking for a list (I can find that out myself) but I'm more interested in hearing from folks who are actually doing it.

Recent pieces for solo brass instruments?

[New-Classical-Music Filter] What are your favorite pieces from the last few decades (or have you written anything) for solo trumpet, trombone, bass tbn, or tuba? Seeking scores and/or recordings to study (online availability would be a huge plus). Small-chamber works, other than brass quintet, would be great too. Asking because I haven't written for brass insts. except in orchestra/large-ensemble contexts, and I want to explore solo/chamber writing for them. Yes, I'll also get what I can from newmusicjukebox. Thanks!

Help me find this cassette-taped brass band

An old, copied cassette of brass music needs your help: what band is this? The cassette tape belongs to my dad. He’s crazy about it, but it’s a copy of a copy of a copy. That means that the quality is really poor, so I’d love to be able to order him a copy of the original as a Christmas gift. However, because it’s a copied-copy, none of the original packaging or liner notes are anywhere to be found.

There is, however, a tracklist scrawled on the back of the cassette. Given the religious nature of the songs, as well as the general feel, it might be logical to assume it’s a Salvation Army band. Here’s the tracklist:

I Go to the Rock
Leaning
He Lives
Jesus Saves
We Will Stand
When the Roll is Called Up Yonder
There Is Power
When We All
Love Lifted Me
Victory in Jesus
Jesus Medley

The music is contemporary and upbeat, and the arrangements are bombastic and jazzy. Trombones and trumpets are the featured instruments, but they’re backed up by a drum kit and a piano, and sometimes a sax can be heard. The musicians are all incredibly talented, with note-for-note perfection and a great deal of improvisational solos showing off their top-notch training.

It’s a live recording – audience clapping and conductor remarks can be heard. Hopefully it’s an officially distributed copy and not a bootleg, because otherwise that might pose some trouble. The conductor has a fairly strong American accent – perhaps Washington?

The word “Hendon” is scrawled in the margins, as are the words “Enfield” and “Metro”. However, these markings may belong to side 2 of the cassette, which seems to be unrelated recordings of straight-laced brass marches.

I appreciate any responses, thoughts, comments and leads you can offer! Thanks so much for your help.

Christmas carols by brass quintet?

Recommend unaccompanied brass quintet recordings of Christmas carols on CD. I love hearing well-arranged Christmas carols played by brass quintets; but it's hard to find a good recording on CD, and it's damn near impossible to sort out legitimate brass quintets from those featuring vocals or rhythm sections. I thought AskMe might yield a few suggestions.

No lyrics. No bass, and no drums. Christmas carols, not original fare. However: Trombone quartet instead of brass quintet? Even saxophone quartet? That's cool. Basically, I'm looking for interesting, small-group horn arrangements in traditional style (not jazz). Got any recommendations?

What song is this?

Songfilter: This one is kind of a long shot, but can someone tell me the name of this rock song based on my sloppy transcription of its notes? I've been looking for this song for a while and I have the main riff stuck in my head constantly. I'm pretty awful at converting real sounds to a music staff, but I tried today anyway. I've heard this song many times on the radio in the past couple years so if you don't have anything else to do and you have a keyboard next to your computer or Cakewalk or something, it sounds something like: (in 4-4 time, with commas separating measures) F C C# C, C# C# (dotted) C (1/8th note) C# C, F C C# (dotted) C(1/8th note), G (dotted) G# (1/8th) C# C
F C C# C, C# C# (dotted) C(1/8th) C# C, F C C# (dotted) C (1/8th), G (3/4) G#, C# (1/2) C (1/2), C (whole) .
The notes are all in the same octave, I should mention, C being the lowest. Also, I think it is a trumpet performing it and there's vocals in the song somewhere. Does that skillessly rendered piece of music mean anything to anyone or is it just nonsense. If anyone can make sense of it (or point me to a better way of presenting it) I'd be very grateful. I've heard this song often enough to make me think that many of you probably know it. Thanks for looking at it anyway.

Hey, youse Jazzholes: I'm in need of some cool jazz (not 'lite' jazz or muzak) with a muted trumpet; brushes on the snare are optional but nice. Something that feels Kind of Blue, maybe a sultry Near Myth (with a horn instead of Bill Smith.) What's cool and new with jazz anyway? Sure, I love the Bad Plus, but I keep going back to the old stuff...
