Help me buy a diesel pickup truck with 200,000+ miles.

Looking at 2002 Chevy 2500 HD 4x4 Diesel, 220,000 miles. I'm told truck diesel engines like this last 500,000 miles. I'm new to diesel and buying a truck with that much mileage on it. What warning signs should I be looking for with either the engine or the chassis? [more inside]

What would be involved in converting an old SUV into an electric vehicle

This is just a thought experiment at this point, and probably will remain so. In the back of my mind I have the idea that when my old SUV finally gives up the ghost I might rip out the internal combustion drivetrain and convert it to an electric vehicle, possibly with a removable range-extender generator. Setting practicality aside for the moment, can you help me envision what this would involve? [more inside]

How might I squeeze a little extra mpg out of my old truck?

1994 Toyota 4Runner with bad muffler/tailpipe – what to do?

My 1994 Toyota 4Runner (V6, RWD) has a bad muffler and/or tailpipe. It runs loud, but not undriveably loud. Today I took a good look under there for the first time since buying the truck (pictures within) and I would like some advice on the best and most cost-effective way to proceed. Bonus mystery switch question at end. [more inside]

Cargo van options with decent gas mileage?

I'd like to find a newish, reliable cargo van with under 100,000 miles, good gas mileage (at least 15+ city, 19+ highway), and a high top. The first two are strongly preferred, the high top could go either way I suppose. My budget is under $18K. [more inside]

truck tailgate mods

My question involves truck tailgate fancification. What I'm asking for is are there kits that help you to transform your existing (boring) tailgate that opens by just folding down into one that opens by swinging sideways? Perhaps one that if you had your tailgate sawed in half, both sides would swing open sideways (meaning it opens in the middle, sort of like a set of french doors)? [more inside]

Help me remember this movie...

I'm trying to remember what the title of this movie was. I think it was made in the 1960's or 1970's in the U.S. I remember watching it on TV on the Sunday Matinee show in the 1980's. The plot involved this millionaire who wanted to attack the Soviet Union, he had a small force which was to attack Russia by driving trucks across the polar ice cap. All I can remember was that in the end of the film his plan is thwarted by the Soviets, who send planes to bomb the ice, and the trucks sink to the bottom of the ocean. Any ideas?

How much knowledge do you need to keep antique/vintage cars running?

I love old cars from the 50s and 60s - especially pickup trucks - and I've always dreamed of owning one. Unfortunately my auto expertise is limited to oil changes and, vaguely, what a carburateur does. I assume you have to have a lot of knowledge to keep an antique car running. Then again, they are much simpler machines than modern vehicles. Right? Where would you recommend picking up the necessary know-how? [more inside]
