Help! I want to buy a tripod for myself for Christmas but I'm confused. I know what sort of pics I want it for, what equipment I'll use it with, what conditions I'll be in and how much I have to spend. I'd like to learn more about tripods. Whenever I visit a camera store or a store site, or Manfrotto's site, I'm bewildered, and I'd rather not be. Instead of asking for recommendations based on my criteria (as in previous questions here and here), I'd like to understand tripods (and heads) as a category so that I can figure out for myself what I need for whatever it is I have in mind, whether it's my digital SLR, a MiniDV video camera, or even a small apochromatic refractor or spotting scope. Are there any resources online, or any books, that I can start with?

What kind of tripod mount ring do I need for a Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6L IS USM Telephoto Zoom Lens? I bought a used lens, but it's missing the tripod collar mount ring. It looks like Canon makes a few different mount rings, and I can't figure out which one I need for this particular lens. Does anybody know? Even better, if you know where I can get one on the cheap. If there's an off-brand solution out there, I don't care who makes it as long as it fits my lens and works well.
