Snacking around the world

Blogs about regional junk food and snacks? I'm mildly obsessed with regional junk foods, and know that there are lots of folks like me. Some of them must have blogs, either writing about the specialties of their own region or seeking out treats from other areas. Bonus points if the blogs are especially well-done or popular.

I'm in the U.S. but I'm interested in American and international snacks. Beverages count, as do regional homemade specialties.

Where the hell do I find Cornetto ice cream treats near Boston?

It's time for this shit to get real. Where the hell can I find a Cornetto in the Boston area? It's finally breaking 80 degrees out and my wife and I are yearning for the creamy deliciousness that is a cornetto. Every time the hot, uncaring sun beats down upon our sweaty brows we wail and gnash our teeth for ice cream relief.

Alternative suggestions are welcome, but we've tried many of the major US-alternatives, from Good Humor cones (also made by Unilever) to Nestle Drumsticks, but none of these nigh-nettos have the same light, creamy mouthfeel. Is there an American product that even comes close?

Ice cream treats is serious business and we'd be willing to drive 45 minutes or so to find an actual cornetto. We're already crazy enough that we have some spare Flake bars to stick in soft serve, so we're willing to go the extra mile.

Or should I just spend $19.95 for those OMG delicious (and pretty) shortbreads?

I want to make these cookies for Boyfriend and mail them to him. Which shortbread recipe should I use, and how do I paint the clover on to them? I shipped him a bunch of cookies for Halloween last year, and while he was very happy about them, some of the more elaborately shaped (and thinner) bats broke during the overnight coast-to-coast voyage despite many layers of bubble wrap and cardboard. So, this St. Patrick's Day, I won't be baking anything in the fragile shape of a clover, but instead I'll steal Dancing Deer's idea and just paint one on top of regular round cookies.

Problem: I've never really baked just regular round sugar cookies. Can you recommend a recipe? Also, regarding the white icing on the cookies: should I just use regular royal icing? And, of course, how do I draw the design on top of each cookie? Diluted green food dye and a clover-shaped stencil, perhaps (but would I do it while the icing was still soft or after it's hardened)? Thanks!

PS. I'll be seeing Boyfriend the weekend before March 17th and could just hand him the cookies if the hive mind deems them unfit to ship, but I delight in mailing him gifts when I'm not around.

I can't find liverwurst anymore!

Where can I score some old fashioned liverwurst in the Pacific Northwest? There always used to be rolls of liverwurst next to the lunch meats, but no more. And Amazon no longer carries Mother Goose Liverwurst; there's a "unknown when again available" note. Mail order is fine, if it's a reliable source. (And I really don't want to make it myself; I just want to smear it on bread.)

Puppy training 101.

Advice needed on a new boxer puppy--best training book and suggestions for training treats especially. My mom and stepdad just got a 6 week old boxer puppy. Neither of them has had a puppy in decades, and when they did they were country dogs (not trained). This dog will be an outside dog, but she's sleeping indoors while she's still really young. I've read about crate-training on this site, but I don't know if that's just for inside dogs. So far, she's peeing in the yard well, but pooping indoors and on the deck. My mom is being very patient with her, but wants to do things right.

We would like suggestions about books and training treats appropriate for such a young puppy. My mom was apparently overwhelmed by all the treats at Wal-Mart. (Small town, no pet store.)

What goodies do we need from Phoenix, AZ? Husband is going there for a few days in July, and we're trying to think of what treats he ought to bring back to New England - stuff we can't find here at home. Cactus Cooler soda and prickly pear jelly/candy are all I can think of. See's Candies would be wonderful, but would not travel well. Any other regional favorites? Thanks in advance!

Dog Treats

My dog loves dried sweet potato chews. They go for $20 a bag in the pet store even though the only ingredients are potatoes. It must be that I can make them at home for the cost of a potato. Do I need a fancy food dehydrator or can I just cut the potatoes up into thick pieces and put my oven on 200F for a many hours? Anyone have a specific recipe or experience making them? I didn't find any recipes on line. Thanks for your help.

clever ideas for a secret buddy

I'm looking for some clever ideas for treats for my ultimate frisbee "secret buddy." They need to be small (not much larger than a big candy bar) and inexpensive (~$5). I don't really know this person that well, but I would like to be more thoughtful than just slipping her a candy bar with a note saying "good luck!". I think puns are more than called for in this situation, especially if they relate to ultimate or geology.

Manhattan Same-Day Candy Delivery Service

Urgent: Help me find a business that does same-day delivery of chocolate or other treats in Manhattan. I need to buy some nice chocolates or other 'classy' treats for delivery in Manhattan tomorrow. It's probably too late in the day to do this reliably using overnight mail. In addition to the treats, I need to be able to enclose a personalized note, ideally one that allows for some length (i.e. not just 20 words). Online ordering is preferable.

Nom nom nom woof

Weird foods do dogs like to eat? A friend and I are considering selling gourmet dog treats at the local farmers' market. We're especially interested in incorporating unusual ingredients (fruits, nuts, veggies, popcorn, etc.) that will appeal to their owners. Problem is, neither of us have a dog. (We're thinking of doing taste tests at the local SPCA.)

Help us get started. What are some weird things that you've known dogs to eat, and that aren't unhealthy? (In other words -- suggestions like rubber bands and ink pens and socks and the like aren't all that useful.) And what are some non-weird things that you've seen dogs absolutely flip for?

Also, what about common supplements? Are they palatable to dogs? We know that garlic and nutritional yeast are often used as flea repellent, but do dogs like stuff like that? Which ones seem to be the tastiest?

Thanks.

Dogs and cats, snacking together...mass hysteria!

My dogs seem to like cat treats. Any harm in it? We've only had a cat for a couple of months, but we've had two rather cat-like dogs (Rat Terriers) for several years. So, we got the cat some treats to encourage her to do certain things (and a water gun to discourage others!). The only thing is, whenever the cat earns a treat, the dogs come running as well and do all of their tricks to try and earn one as well. I've been giving them the cat treats under the assumption that one or two a day isn't going to do them any harm, but I'm not sure. Anyone had any negative reactions with dogs eating cat treats I should know about?

Need a specific vegan rice krispy treat recipe

I'm looking for a recipe for Vegan Rice Krispy treats from a fall 2007 issue of the magazine Vegetarian Times. A couple months ago I cut a recipe out of the magazine Vegetarian Times for what were essentially a vegan version of Rice Krispy treats. I made the recipe for some friends, they loved them, I planned to make them again and stashed the recipe. Now it's time to make them again and the recipe has disappeared from the face of the earth. The Vegetarian Times website doesn't have the recipe online (their website sucks as a whole actually), my local library doesn't subscribe to vegetarian times and here I sit with all the ingredients (almond butter, brown rice syrup, vegan chocolate chips, brown rice cereal) and no recollection of quantities, etc.

I don't recall exactly which issue of the magazine the recipe came from but it was definitely this fall so I'd say probably the September or October issue. Naturally the recipe wasn't called "Vegan Rice Krispy Treats" but was instead Crispy Rice Squares or something like that. I've listed the bulk, in fact maybe all, of the ingredients above so if you have the back issues it shouldn't be too terribly hard to figure out which one it is. I would be incredibly grateful to anyone who could find and either post or email this recipe to me: info AT consuminglouisville.com

Chews for two moos?

What do cows like to eat? Soon I am going to be visiting a friend of mine who has two pet cows. I'll be bringing a 6-year-old who wants to feed the cows some treats. I asked my friend about the cows' preferences and she said that she'd tried all manner of fresh fruit and horse treats but her cows didn't like them.
Help me get ideas on how to spoil my cat.

My cat is dying, any ideas on how I can spoil the hell out of him in his last few months? Took him to the vet today, and his lungs got x-rayed. Hes always had asthma (as a result of being the runt of the litter and a case of worms as a kitten), but the prednisone we've been giving him to keep the attacks away weakened his immune system. There are white spots in his lungs that the vet thinks is cancer. I don't want to put my cat through a biopsy surgery and cancer treatments, hes already lived longer than we thought he would due to his frailty. So I've decided to just let him ride it out, and will put him to sleep when I feel it's time.

But until then I want to spoil him, let him have some nice things and make the last few months of his life as nice and comfortable as possible. Anyone have ideas of nice things to buy cats? I've never really gone past what was availible at the local pet store.

Thanks.
