Public transport from portland to scneic places?

Is there public transport from Portland to scenic places along columbia gorge or to canon beach? I want to bring my wife to Portland with me on a business trip but she doesnt drive and doesnt want to do any guided tours. She wants to experience natural beauty and quietness. I remember my trip to canon beach and down the columbia gorge which I found to be wonderful but she would need to be able to get to all these places on her own using public transport of some kind. Does anyone know if this is possible? Any advice? Thanks!

Just moved to London, now I want to leave.

I just moved to London from California last month and I'm keen to make the most of my time here by hitting as many European cities as possible. I loved being able to use farecast, farecompare, etc to see where I could go each weekend in the US and where the ultra low fares were to be had. Is there a similar service in Europe? Any way to be notified about cheap weekend fares from the UK would be fantastic. Thanks to the hive brain. - Alex

Mt. Washington travel advice

Mt. Washington, NH, lodging: We are planning a family trip to the NE this fall, and one potential stop (at my request) is Mt. Washington, New Hampshire. A cursory search makes it appear that the upscale Bretton Woods resort is the only lodging in the immediate vicinity. While we are not averse to staying there, are there other, cheaper options in the area? [more inside]

Where should I travel to if I don't want to sightsee?

I really want to get away from my house to finish up some screenplays for a May 1 deadline. So where can a not-so-rich person go for the last two weeks of April that will allow much peace and quiet while being both safe and warm enough to wander around in short sleeves night and day. Suppose a cost of around $1500--the cheaper the better--including return airfare to Toronto. Note that I like seclusion but I also don't drive so it needs to be someplace close to the necessities.

First there is a mountain then there is no mountain, then there is

I'm going to japan from march 9 until april 6, and I want to climb Mt Fuji, from the bottom to the top. How much snow should I expect? How cold is it going to be? Do I need to bring boots and 3 layers of technical outdoor clothing or a warm jacket and sneakers? My lonely planet says its doable, but thats pretty much it. [more inside]

Spain or Pain?

Panic is in the house. My wife has planned a trip with our 13 year old daughter from the US to Spain. They leave on Sunday afternoon from JFK. Tonight while gathering her passport, we realize that her passport expired 1 year ago. (A minor's passport is only valid for 5 years.) Assuming cost is not an issue, is there anyway for my wife and daughter to make the trip legally on Sunday? I am looking for practical advice for someone in the NY tri-state area.

Flying with hot dogs

For a friend: Can I bring a pack of hot dogs on a plane to China? That is, are there any regulations that would prevent me from doing so, and will they still be good after ~36 hours? They're Hebrew National all-beef, and I'd put them in cargo.
