Is it really that risky to take a GPS unit to Russia?

This travel advisory from the State Department website, dated 1998, states that the use of GPS units is highly regulated in Russia and that it is risky to bring one unless it is fully documented. Now, GPS units are a lot more common today than they were in 1998. Do I really have to worry about this? I am planning a multi-country trip and I could mail myself the GPS ahead of time to my post-Russia destination if I had to. I am an amateur photographer and I use the unit to tag the location of photos I have taken.

Options for staying connected to the Internet while traveling outside the US for extended period of time.

I'm going to be traveling outside the US for the next year with my laptop and was wondering what the best options are for internet connectivity. The itinerary isn't set, but it will be a mix of Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and South America. I'm a freelance web developer and will be working remotely part time to support my existing clients during my travels. [more inside]

Trying to avoiding a cat-astrophy

Two options, neither ideal. Wondering what AskMeta's amazing cat experts feel would be best for my two cats: joining me during my two-month assignment in Chicago, or staying in New York but with a cat-sitter who may require bringing their cat into our home. (more details inside...) [more inside]

If we can survive the honeymoon, the actual marraige should be a breeze.

Road-trip filter. I am in the process of planning a rather ambitious honeymoon. He and I are canoeing in the Boundary Waters area of Minnesota for a week, which is exciting enough, but we are also planning to drive there. From Mississippi. And tent camping on the way. [more inside]

What was the boat journey to Paris like way back when?

What was the boat journey up the Rhone (and the Saone and down the Seine) to Paris like in the old days, before the internal combustion engine and the damming of the river? Where were the portages? How long did it take? Any resources greatly appreciated, from memoirs to histories to (well researched) novels, online or off.

What's a 6month adventure that will pay for itself?

I would like to quit my job and go on a self-sustaining adventure. By self-sustaining, I mean that it would mostly pay for itself, cost very little, or both. I have money saved, but I will need it as a buffer when I return to the real world and look for a job again. For argument's sake, let's say I can put $1500 toward this adventure. My time frame is 2 months to a year. I'm open to anything from being a frieght train hobo to volunteering in a far-away country to flying to Sweden and finding a job washing dishes. [more inside]

on the road again

In late May, I'll be driving with a bunch of friends in an RV from Sacramento CA to George WA and back for the Sasquatch Music Festival. I've only driven as far north as the Oregon border before, so I'm looking for recommendations of interesting places to stop - your favorite diners, pie shops, waterfalls, hot springs (improved or not) and other oddities of northwest highway culture. I'm familar with many Northern California hot springs (I really like the one in Sierraville), and would love to find other very inexpensive and informal places like that.
