Thanks to some ridiculous flight deals, a friend of mine and I are headed to Japan for two weeks. The catch/opportunity: the flight is next February. There's probably a bunch of really neat things to do in Japan that unfortunately have huge waiting lists or need to be planned well in advance, right? For once in my life, we are those people planning well in advance! So what neat things with long waiting lists should we sign up for now? [more inside]
Where is the coolest place I can visit in July or August? Primarily in terms of weather, but also the other type of cool! Preferably in the US, due to cost, but also open to foreign locales if the average flight might be $1000 or less, leaving from the Midwest. [more inside]
I need to plan and purchase the most complicated flight I've ever planned and purchased before. I am SUPER BROKE and SUPER FLEXIBLE. I'm hoping you can answer a few questions (inside) about how to plan this. [more inside]
I'd like to celebrate my SOs upcoming grad school graduation by taking him on a cute surprise trip. We are in the greater DC metro area and I would really like to get out of DC, but can only do one or two nights over the weekend. My SO is not much of city person, or else I would probably do NYC. Ideally it would be no more than 3 hours by car; or alternatively I am open to a flight or train ride that is not too long. We previously did Asheville NC and really enjoyed it. Charlottesville is close to what I think I am looking for, but we go there frequently already. Any ideas? My SO really enjoys things related to Architecture and Landscape Architecture if that helps.
My husband and I are landing in Chicago for the first time on Saturday, May 3rd and will be there until the evening of the 5th. One purpose of the trip is to visit my husband's father, who has been living there for the last year, but the other is to explore Chicago. We are staying at La Quinta in Downtown Chicago, mainly because we got a good deal on it through Hotwire. My husband's dad lives at the Streeter, in the Near North Side area. What should we see while we're there? [more inside]
This summer, I’ll be deciding whether I’ll be continuing with college, or if I want to leave and go into the real world and learn on my own. So I want to see the real world and get some perspective. What trips have you guys done that have been really eye-opening and meaningful? [more inside]
Next month I have a 10:30pm flight out of San Diego and all my mates are leaving in the morning. What lovely fun thing could I do that I could only do there? Or, never mind me, what would you do if you just had 12 hours in San Diego? [more inside]
My in-laws are flying in from India to Boston. They've never been to Canada and are curious to see the Eastern part including Toronto, Ottawa, Quebuc, Montreal. Do you have any recommendations on guiding tour companies which they may enjoy. (Please note, they aren't open to renting a car, so I'm researching guided tour options). Thanks in advance, -Z
Going on honeymoon in June to Paris. I have a friend who runs a business renting apartments in Paris for a month at a time, and he's just sent me the first two options. One costs 1390 Euro, the other 1250 Euro. Both are crazy good locations with crucial amenities like bathrooms. Is this about right, or should we ask for cheaper quotes? [more inside]

I've got a 5 week sabbatical next June/July and was thinking of taking my family (wife;3 kids) to see some of the national parks here in the US. I'm starting in Boston, and would like to spend time at the following: * Mount Rushmore * Yellowstone * Grand Teton * Yosemite * Grand Canyon * other I'm looking for feedback on the pros and cons of travel methods from place to place. Planes? Car rental? RV rental? Train? What are your experiences doing this?
In 6 weeks' time, my husband and I are quitting our jobs to go on a 2-3 month road trip around the USA before moving to Europe. I have some questions about travel/trip/health insurance for folks who may have done this or something similar. Is it sensible or possible to use travel insurance as our primary health insurance? I'm planning a trip to Paris from Boston for my family (wife, 3 girls 13, 11, 9) sometime over the summer. I don't know what I'm doing. How do I find the least expensive flights? Are there tricks to knowing when to leave and return? e.g. are there travel days that get better rates; leave on a Wednesday and return on Monday for cheapest flights? What's the minimum number of days we should stay to make it worth the trip? I was thinking 5-6 days. Is July better than August in Paris? Do you have a favorite place to stay while in Paris? hotel? b&b? youth hostel? Thank you!

My family lives in Tokyo, and I grew up there, but I now go to school in the states. My parents want me to come out to visit next month, but I'm a bit concerned about the radiation. They assure me that any increase in the levels is negligible, but I realize that there are many different types of radiation, and food grown in the Fukushima area is still being served in Tokyo. I just really don't want to be a victim of hindsight, and it seems for every reputable article I can find that indicates the levels are safe, I can find another that begs me to reconsider the first. I don't know what to do. I don't want to be paranoid, but I also don't want the whole family to be at risk if there is an overlooked issue.
Help me plan a long-weekend getaway in the Southwest. I don't have enough time to make it a road trip, but would like to drive down some scenic roads. I don't want to camp in the wilderness, but would like see a national park. I don't want a full native-american experience, but would love to buy some native american jewelry. Some shopping/dining would be cool. I want to take more photographs than I'll ever have time to upload to flickr. [more inside]

I hate fast instant coffee. I will be traveling by car from Toronto to Montreal. There are lots of stops where one can get Tim Hortons or McDonald's instant coffee. Unfortunately/fortunately I don't like their coffee. I can make good coffee at home. What type of thermos can keep it fresh and warm for a good portion of my trip?
Get Me Out Of My Travel Rut: My tour takes me to the beatific city of San Fransisco soon and while I visit about once a year, I usually end up going to same places/doing the same things. What's terribly new in SF? What are the fresh must-see shows, restaurants, nightspots, stores, or Things To Do. Ideally I'm looking for things/places that have opened within the year. Will have a car and able to make day trips out into the environs. [more inside]
My boyfriend and I will be visiting my dad in China for two weeks at the end of October, beginning of November. I've been twice before (my dad has lived there for the past 12 years), but this will be my boyfriend's first time. We'd like a good mix of city and rural areas, and are tentatively planning four days in Shanghai, four in Beijing, four in Guilin, and four in Yunnan. However, we're open to other suggestions, so what do you think? Too much time in one place, not enough in another? Is there another must-see area? What should we do while we're in those places? Any ideas are welcome!
