A milestone birthday is coming up. Would appreciate hive mind advice on celebrating solo. Snowflakes inside. [more inside]
I'll be traveling with a friend to meet my sister and her husband in Hawaii over Christmas. It's the worst possible set of dates, I know. But it is the only set of dates which works. I'm looking for help in choosing between islands and hotel/hiking recommendations. I'm also looking for recommendations in Honolulu. [more inside]
Planning to buy an unlocked Android phone US / Amazon for regular visits to the US, but also need it to work in several other countries if I just buy a sim on arrival. I do not need roaming or to receive calls to a US number in other countries. There are a gazillion different answers on different websites. Anyone have a pretty good idea if I'm OK with this one? Coming to San Francisco next week for a conference and staying near Union Square. Looking for restaurant ideas for quick breakfasts, hour long lunches, and long lingering dinners within walking distance. I eat everything, and while cheap is good, good is more important. The only other time I've been in the city your recommendations for Bi-Rite and Tartine were spot-on, so let me know where I should go next. [more inside]
There are early rumblings that my cousins might start planning our next family reunion (an every four years thing) in Italy for summer 2018. How can I best start saving now to make this a possibility for me, a person of modest means? [more inside]
I'm applying for permission to attend a training workshop in Austin, TX, from Aug. 21-25, and I have some transit questions for Austinites!: [more inside]
I'm heading off for my first semi-solo road trip with kids (and my mom) from either DC or Winchester to the Jacksonville/St. Augustine area of Florida. We are planning to take two days and stop every few hours for a break, preferably somewhere scenic and fun for the kids. [more inside]
I will be spending 4-5 days alone while wife is in a conference during the day in Hamburg Germany, Since the highlight of Hamburg seems to be a huuuge toy train museum (Miniatur Wunderland), I wanted to know if there are day trips (via train) I could take to neighboring cities/countries (berlin?, Paris?) that might be feasible or recommended to get the most out of my trip, but be able to get back at night.
I'm leaving for an ambitious 2000 mile road trip through eastern Canada later this week. I've been on road trips before, but this one will be the longest. What are your tips for staying comfortable and not bored to tears during long car rides? I have a pile of podcasts to listen to and some company to converse with, but I'm sure that there are things I haven't thought of that can make the trip more enjoyable. Thanks!
I just fell madly in love with Amsterdam. I'd like to go back in December (mostly because it's easiest for me to get away then). Of course, I have no idea what Amsterdam will be like in December, so I'm turning to the hive mind. I'm also looking for some specific advice on where to stay. [more inside]
Hey Me-fites, I'm dipping my toes into the pool of time travel novels. My main character is going back to 1984--because I want to write about 1984 Vancouver, pre Expo, pre Olympics, when it was a hick town on the far edge of the world. When my characters back in time, he's going to check out some bands, preferably pre-famous, you know, $5 cover, one of three acts, tiny clubs, etc. So, oh wise ones, what band should he find himself seeing?
Can you recommend a natural-beauty vacation locale that will be warm over (American) Thanksgiving? International destinations are fine but total travel time needs to fit into 5 days. Snowflakes: no (or not just) beaches, hiking should accommodate a range of fitness levels.
As seems to be the trend around here, my wife and I will visit Reykjavik in October. However, our flight gets in to Keflavik very early. Any suggestions for entertainment in the mean time? Additional questions inside. [more inside]
There is no # or way to do this listed on their site, but I need to speak with someone. Please help if you can. [more inside]
I'm about to be in Miami working at the comic convention from the 29th to the 5th. I'll be working at the Miami Beach Convention Center, staying at the Hyatt Regency on 2nd, and for every day but the 5th will only have a few hours free in the evenings. On the 5th I need to be in Ft. Lauderdale by 3, but I have the morning free. I am expecting to dislike Florida in a multitude of ways, but want to remain open minded and have fun and learn something despite that. [more inside]
I am departing this Friday (three days!) for a three week trip to Guatemala, the first two weeks of which will be spent at Escuela Montana. Hooray! Then my dad got involved. Uh-oh! Many, many cautionary e-mails later, I am considering hiding under the bed for three weeks and just telling people I went to Guatemala. Esperanzame, Mefites! [more inside]
I will possibly be in London in August, and would like to take the time to not only see Oxford, but to spend a day or two in a smaller, more peaceful town or village. What are my best options? [more inside]

I will vacation in Taiwan shortly, arriving late afternoon on Saturday, June 18. I have a reservation at the W Taipei from then until Thursday the 23rd. That Thursday, I figure on leaving Taipei and traveling to elsewhere on the island, maybe taking the train down the west coast to Tainan and Kaoshiung, then returning to Taipei or Taoyuan the night of Saturday the 25th and catching my flight out the morning of the 26th. My interests for the trip include food, contemporary and traditional art and culture, food, areas of great natural or architectural beauty, nightlife, and food. [more inside]
Help me solve my transportation conundrum! [more inside]
My landlord needs a couple of days to fix some stuff in my bathroom so I booked a last minute trip to Toronto this week, from Wednesday to Thursday (coming via train from Montréal). My birthday is also coming up shortly + I recently hit an investment milestone so I would like to treat myself a bit! [more inside]
I'm in Italy for a little while and figuring out the restaurant customs — including purchasing a liter of flat or sparkling water at each meal. Today, I was still a little thirsty but had to run, and asked if I could take the half-empty (glass, but obviously commercial) bottle. The server said I couldn't, and I asked if the same was true for plastic bottles. She said that, in either case, it's not appropriate to take leftover water. What's up with that (assuming it's generally true)?
A friend and I are taking a trip tomorrow to Lyon (from Berlin). We found this thread but want more information specific to Lyon. [more inside]
I'm headed for Riga, Latvia for work for the second time. On the first go-round, I had very little time off, so this time I wised up and tacked a couple vacation days onto the end of my trip so I can do some traveling. But where should I go, and how?! I'm overwhelmed with the possibilities. [more inside]
I will be visiting Asheville during beer week! Looking for suggestions for your favorite breweries, your favorite bars, your favorite gay/queer bars, your favorite Asheville snacks (biscuits please!)... [more inside]
I'm thinking of visiting Chile in June and July, which are winter months there. There seems to be a lot of focus on outdoors activities in Chile, which might be more enjoyable during their summer. If I don't plan on skiing in Chile, what other activities should I consider? What is Santiago like in June and July? What other destinations would you recommend? Coming from Oregon, I'm used to cold, wet winters.
We're going to Australia this summer (late July-early August) and would prefer not to book rooms in advance, but will that be a disaster? [more inside]

We'll be there in early June, with access to a car, for about a week. Accommodations are sorted, but we'll be free for most of the days. This thread had lots of great recommendations, but I don't want to miss anything. Two adults in average shape, neither of us are SCUBA certified, but we might like snorkeling. Looking online has my head spinning.
My partner and I are flying from the US into Melbourne on the first of July and leaving two weeks later. I'm taking a last-minute trip to Europe in a few weeks and will be flying into and out of Berlin. [more inside]
I've been traveling a lot and my overstuffed backpack is wreaking havoc on my back. Help me find a better solution? [more inside]

I have lived in Saint Louis for over 10 years; my wife for 11. Neither of us are natives (so That Question has no bearing on our lives). She is in the running for a job in Independence, MO, and yes, I am gun-jumping here, but I think it's worthwhile to start gathering information about potentially living in KC. [more inside]

Do you know of a cool/weird/interesting/kitschy place to stay along that route, say within 30-45 minutes of the highway? I am thinking something like the Tee Pee Motel, The Clown Motel, or other interesting places to stay.
