Traveling to Europe for the first time ever, and I'm super excited! Have most of a plan mapped out, but not sure on details and would appreciate any advice. [more inside]
I'll be in London somewhere around June 2016 and am looking for hotel recommendations. My stay will be approximately one week long. I will be spending extended periods of time in the hotel room working with one other person so I am primarily looking for hotels with very comfortable rooms. I would be very gratified if I could get some hotel recommendations in the 200 to 300 USD range (although if you happen to know of some amazing sub-200 USD hotel, please do tell). [more inside]
I've got some paternity leave and my family and I are going to Europe in January, starting in London. Where should we stay in London? Where should we go elsewhere? We'll have a two-month-old and a two-year-old. [more inside]
I escaped a long-term abusive marriage homeless with a lot of hermit like attributes. It's been about three years of clawing and crawling out of that hole, and while I'm not completely out, I do have an apartment, job, friends, and enough money to feed me and my kid three squares a day. That deserves a celebration and I'm determined that I'm going to spend a long weekend with my best friend in London in December as a combo birthday/holiday gift to myself. I want to see Hyde Park done up for the holidays, do a Jack the Ripper tour, eat in a pub, and visit a museum [more inside]
I have been given the opportunity to take a ten-day trip to London! I am super excited! I also have way, way less time to plan than I would normally like! So, I turn to MetaFilter to help answer some of my questions, and/or point me toward online resources that can do the same and help me generally just get along there as a visitor. [more inside]
I have a US passport, tickets to see Hamlet at the Barbican Theatre in London next week, and oh so many questions. Please help me make this happen! [more inside]
Londoners and experienced travelers; HALP. Landing in London during (currently) planned Tube strike; Transport for London website indicates NO service from Heathrow Terminal 3 on trains. So. How do I get from the airport to Gloucester Road? Should I prebook coach tickets? Links and advice needed!
A friend of mine is moving from Israel to London on the 28th of August. Their living arrangement just fell through, and as well as getting in touch with people they already know in London, they are looking for resources to find short-term rental housing there. They are looking for temporary accommodation for one to two weeks while trying to find a more permanent arrangement. What resources (preferably online) are available for finding a room for a short-term rental?
Spending a week in London soon. Here at home in the US, my wife and I are quite used to using Google Maps on our smartphones to help us get around in unfamiliar places on vacation, but we know we won't be able to use our regular phones when out and about in London. We've been thinking about buying an inexpensive Android phone once in the UK entirely for the purpose of using Google Maps to help us get around. is this a good idea, and, if you think so, where would you go to get one? Flying into Heathrow from the US, arriving in the evening on a Saturday. My wife thinks we should take the tube from the airport to our hotel in Kensington (the hotel is a short walk from the West Kensington station). Help me figure out a couple of things. [more inside]

I'll be in London for a party & wedding over two weekends, and need ideas for domestic travel during the week in between, and the few days after. Travelling to London next week. Need advice on packing for the weather. [more inside]
Where are some interesting places to walk in London? I am in London the next few days and would like to explore some new areas after work. All I know is Bloomsbury to Mayfair to Westminster, so not much at all! It would need to be reachable by tube and should be safe. I would love to find little shops or cafés as well as just a pleasant place to walk for a few hours. I am staying in Hackney, if that is relevant. [more inside]
Planning Ahead Filter: My travel buddy already has a ticket on Airline A (ATL-LHR round trip) for our planned trip together in November. (Miles & awards redeemed so she is set). We're deciding what to do about my ticket. [more inside]
In a few hours (5), I will leave Kuwait en-route back to the United States. I have a 24-hour layover in London and a hotel room (right across from Heathrow) that has already been bought and paid for my my company. I will arrive at around noon, and I will have until around 10 a.m.-ish tomorrow (Sunday) to explore London. Money is no significant concern (but let's keep it reasonable). What are the absolute must-see PG-13 things to do in London in 22 hours? GO!
My wife will be in London for 2 days in late April. She asked me to ask you some things. [more inside]
Howdy! We're relocating from New York City to London at the end of this year, and of course we're taking our cat Olive with us. What we're having a little bit of a hard time with is figuring out just *how* to bring her, and we're hoping you can help us. [more inside]
Asking for a friend: Older American couple is visiting London for the first time. They're having a hard time figuring out travel agencies / DIY internet bookings. Can you make some recommendations? [more inside]
Even though I'm totally broke, I'm going to London for nine days at the end of August. Yes, the most expensive time to go. Plane tickets were bought with miles, and I'm staying with friends-of-friends. This is why I'm able to go at all. But I'd like some tips on how to have a good time while spending as little money as possible in a place I am totally unfamiliar with (and I want to bug my hosts as little as possible, too). Hi London Mefites! I will have time during an extended layover to choose one neighbourhood of your large, international city to eat dinner, wander a little, sleep, and eat breakfast in. Which neighbourhood should I choose? [more inside]
I finally saved up enough flyer miles for a flight to Europe and I am super excited since I've never been. I'm planning on a week in London and then a week in Paris, advice for things to do while I'm there would be much appreciated. [more inside]
As per my previous question, my wife is attending a course in London in June so we are moving from Australia for three months. We were thinking somewhere central initially, but the prices are nuts, so we will probably pick somewhere on the tube line (red or black line). Any suggestions for the seasoned London mefites in this thread that would suit our family of four (me, wife and two preschool boys). For reference, our rent here is equivalent to about 250 - 300 pound a week, but no idea how that compares. my wife would also be okay with up to a 1 hr commute, especially if we live at the start of the line and she can get a seat. Thanks all.
Due to a last-minute work trip and a big difference in plane ticket prices, I have from Thursday evening through to a 2 PM Heathrow departure Monday free to go exploring. Where should I go and what should I do? [more inside]

I will be travelling to the UK this May/June and will be in London on June 3. I have heard that for the Jubilee Pageant on the Thames, some pubs along the river are accepting reservations for tables. It seems like a great way to spend the day - does anyone have any specific recommendations for pubs along the Thames that I might contact?
Have any recommendations of places to stay in East London in June? [more inside]
I've just booked an international trip with a 3/4-day layover on the way home. Great, I think, I can spend some time in the city, get a cheap hotel, see a few friends for dinner and then get some sleep and a shower before my trip home - easy! Problem: after booking the trip, I realize I will be in London during the Olympics, and hotel prices have accordingly skyrocketed. I am on a grad student budget. Help me find a decent place to stay - ideally not in a shared room - that won't kill my budget? [more inside]
On a scale of 1-10, with 1 being "very safe" and with going-to-11 being "the most crazy," how insane is it to try to get into London from Heathrow to do some light sightseeing on my way back home to the US. (I've read the previous questions, but needed some clarification about some of the issues!) [more inside]

Often I want to go from Southampton UK to Islington. The public transportation system in London is awesome! There must be a better way than the white-knuckle drive through the city I currently do... Given that I want to do the first leg of the trip via car, I expect there is somewhere in SW London I can park and take public transportation, and get to Islington relatively quickly (~1 hour) and cheaply. I've played around with Google maps, and there are a bajillion options.... anyone know one that is near optimal? Ideally with free/cheap parking, and outside the congestion fee zone.
