For a friend: Can I bring a pack of hot dogs on a plane to China? That is, are there any regulations that would prevent me from doing so, and will they still be good after ~36 hours? They're Hebrew National all-beef, and I'd put them in cargo.

My wife and I are looking to pack a carry-on care package for a friend who is flying to China soon. He will be staying there for a month on business. What kinds of things should I send on the plane with him? Just small things that would fit in say a quart size ziplock (or maybe something more creative than a ziplock). Perhaps stuff to do on the plane or maybe something useful once he gets to China? Just plain fun, stupid stuff is good too. [more inside]

I'm flying to DC this week, and all of my travel sized containers are four ounces, not the 3 oz. specified in the TSA bulletin. I went shopping to try to find some more compliant containers, and everything I found was 4 oz. as well!!! The bottles are short, I'm only using 2 of them, and they easily fit into the quart-sized baggie. What are my chances, MeFi? Would I be courting trouble to use what I've got? [more inside]

Every time I fly I notice that people order an inordinate amount of tomato juice from the sky waitress. It's out of proportion to the amount of tomato juice I see people drinking on the ground. What gives?

I got a great rate from Qantas Air, but it's economy class, and I'm 6'2". 23 hours in a small seat will be tough and I want tips on getting an upgrade to business class, or even first class without spending a lot of money. I'm flying in a few weeks, and I'm majorly worried by some of the stories I've been hearing about physical TSA screenings. There are certain ways I am not willing to consent to be touched by strangers, no matter what.
Do I have any recourse if I am singled out for a physical search of my person, other than not to fly at all? How can I prepare in advance for potential conflicts?

TravelFilter: My Partner's Grandmother passed away this morning. He is driving out (ME to OK) with his family today, but needs to fly home ahead of the rest of them to be back at work on Monday. Are there other online of super-cheap airfares besides "the big three"? Am I doomed to spending every spare moment for the next three days researching airfare prices?

ExperienceFilter: so I'm going back to Cali (from Texas) in a couple of weeks to be in a dear friend's wedding. I'm a cheapskate, and deathly afraid to fly (though I will if I must), and have found, much to my surprise, that Amtrak offers the cheapest ($276 vs. $375 bus and $400-800 air) round-trip fare by far. However, the few people I've spoken with all semi-shudder at the thought of taking the train long-distance, mainly due to unexplained delays. What's your long train ride experience? Is it worth the cheap fare?
