Adventure, but not too much adventure

I am planning on going to Turkey at the end of November for just shy of two weeks and am looking for a couple of pieces of advice: Is a side trip to Cairo alone for two days a terrible decision? And are there lodgings in Istanbul where it is easy to meet other travelers that don't involve giant dorms and drunken twenty somethings? [more inside]

Tips on scoring an exit row seat?

I'm flying to Hawaii for work at the end of May (yay) and work booked my ticket for me. My four USAirways flights (Milwaukee to Phoenix and Phoenix to Hawaii and then reverse) have ZERO exit row seats available online. I even had to pay $89 for their "ChoiceSeat" on one flight because it was the *only* aisle seat available (which have no more legroom than a regular seat, just allows you to board before the rest of the passengers). At 6'6", this is troubling. I called USAirways today and was first told they had exit row seats for purchase (at roughly $90/flight) but that she was having trouble getting them to work on her system so she had to transfer me to their "online helpdesk". That person told me that there were no exit row seats available at all, full stop. I can't rebook to another flight because my arrival is being timed with other coworkers. So, are there any tips/tricks/secret handshakes I can use at the airport to try to get a seat with a little more room? I'm extremely grateful that I get to go to Hawaii on someone else's dime but am anticipating agony the whole way there and back.

How important are all these vaccines for Peruvian travel?

I will be spending a month this summer in the high jungle plateau of Tarapoto, Peru. I am trying to get my preventative care in order, and will be getting Hepatitis A and typhoid vaccines, as well as taking anti-malarial medication. I don't think I will be getting the yellow fever vaccine, the Hepatitis B vaccine, or the rabies vaccine; the first due to lack of access and the latter two due to risk factors and cost, respectively. Would you try harder to find access to the yellow fever vaccine or rethink the other two, or am I good with the three I'm doing? [more inside]

Day-long layover in Amsterdam

I have a day-long layover (7.5 hours) in Amsterdam coming up. Research leads me to believe the airport is relatively close to the city, enough that I can probably take a train in and hang out for a few hours. What to do? I'll be there during the day. Things I'm interested in: walking around, good food/beer, clothes shopping (smaller boutique type places), modern art. I was in the city about 10 years ago so I saw a couple of the major sights.

Translation Filter: German and Czech Food Allergy List

We are travelling to Germany and the Czech Republic later this month. My mom has a set of severe food allergies, and would like to print some translated cards for restaurant staff just to be on the safe side. I'd like to translate this list into both German and Czech please. I'm happy to translate using a dictionary, but I feel that native speakers will have a better handle on subtle details, such as corn and its derivatives (for example, corn flour is not big in Canada, but corn starch and corn meal are in everything). Many thanks Metafilter! [more inside]

What's the best method to get this anxious kitty across the ol' USA?

Special Agent Dale Cooper is a very sweet, loving and lazy kitty. He is very happy living the simplest of lives - by day he lazes at the foot of my bed. He takes odd breaks to snack, or lie in his cat lounge. Every once in a while, when he needs to shake it up, he takes an adventure-tourism vacation to lounge on the bathmat. I am currently anticipating a job offer that will take him VERY far out of his comfort zone - clear across the country. Previous travels have been traumatic for Agent Cooper and his traveling companions (namely me, but also anyone in a small radius). I'll explain at length inside - warning: it's a little, but not terribly, gross. [more inside]

Name that children's picture book - a tailor traveled the world.

After reading a recommendation here for the utterly delightful Ms. Rumphius, I started thinking about kids books about travel that I used to enjoy. When I was a kid I loved a picture book about a kingdom where everyone had to wear black all the time because the prince or princess had died and the kingdom was in mourning, and an apprentice tailor traveled the world by boat and learned about clothing in different cultures and eventually came home and made beautiful colorful clothing for everyone in the kingdom and the sadness over the kingdom was lifted. I have searched and searched and can't remember anything more about it. Can anyone remember? It was a lovely book and I would like to share it with my daughter.

What should I give my temporary neighbor as a going-away present?

My landlord has been subletting his apartment to an elderly Japanese woman for a couple months, and I've been acting as sort of a superintendent while the landlord's away, helping her out with navigating the language barrier, our building's eccentricities, and other issues that would normally be brought to the landlord. When she moved in she brought me a lovely gift of Japanese rice crackers, and during the time she's been here she's brought me a few other small gifts (fruits from the farmer's market, pastries from a local bakery), presumably in thanks for my help. She is incredibly sweet and I've enjoyed interacting with her, and I'd like to get her a small gift when she leaves next month. But I'm at a loss for what! I'm thinking something non-perishable she can take back with her, but alcohol doesn't seem appropriate, and I'm not sure about chocolate, either, which is my usual go-to after booze. Any ideas? We're in Berkeley, CA if that helps.
