buying a used car for the first time with cash

I'm in the market to buy my first car. I plan to spend about 15-17k, buy a used car, and pay entirely in cash. I'm planning to look at mostly private sellers, since they have the greatest benefit from doing a cash transaction, and are most likely to lower their price. Am I right? [more inside]

Marin Car Rentals Accessible Via San Francisco Public Transport

I'm thinking of flying into San Francisco (SFO), renting a car, driving up the coast, and flying home from Portland. I'll spend a few days in the city before heading north. I want to avoid renting the car either at the airport or in the city. (This is a fun trip. Driving in San Francisco is never fun for me.) I've rented before from a small Hertz shop within walking distance of the ferry landing in Sausalito. Are there other rental car shops within equally easy reach from public transportation or a cab from the city into Marin?

Is there a better area to stay or a better way to arrange transportation to support this?

I've got no car, but it's not breaking my heart

Non-drivers of the world, unite... by foot, bus, or bike. I'm not proud of being a non-driver at my age, but I've never really felt the need to learn, and do fine with walking and public transportation... and the whole environmental trend is a bonus. But does anyone else get a lot of grief for being a grown non-driver? And how do you manage to get by (literally and figuratively)? [more inside]

Switching off Traffic Lights

I'd like to ask a relatively simple question – what would happen if we switched of traffic lights when we didn't really need them? I'd like to know from an environmental aspect what effect turning off the nations traffic lights would have towards saving electricity and reducing emissions. From a social point of view could the nation's road users manage with such a change? And from a technical innovation view point – could it and should it happen and if so how?

the economics of intercity bus services
