I just got denied my car rental in Hoboken because I don't have a credit card (the things you learn ...). How can I get to Hartford right now in time for the Springsteen show tonight? Complication: I have a bag with me that they won't let me take in the venue. [more inside]

I live and work in Blacksburg, Virginia, a good place to live without a car, which I don't own due to primarily budget, but also health/anxiety issues. And that's perfectly fine for city living, but there ain't no bus routes to the Appalachian Trail or to the Cascades waterfall or the dozens of other outdoor places I'd like to visit and hike and explore. What would y'all suggest I do? [more inside]
In relation to reading a recent article on the Skydeck, I wondered if flying at 40,000 feet and thereby removing an equivalent chunk of the Earth's atmosphere, made a significant difference in how clearly one can view the stars.
I live in California but will be spending all of December in a small city in Tennessee. I need a car to get around the city and perhaps do one longer drive to Atlanta and back. I won't have a car available to borrow there. What kind of options would I have for transportation? [more inside]
I'm going to be in Oakland (visiting family) and need to get to Santa Cruz (Scotts Valley) on a Sunday, and I won't have a car. What's the least expensive way to do it in a reasonable amount of time?
Are there metro systems not open to the general public? I know of Moscow's rumoured Metro-2, but are there others, either for military or civilian purposes, that are not part of a city's public transit system? I'd also be interested to know of rumoured systems, or any fictional systems described in great detail.
Aldeburgh to London via public transit, on a Sunday next March: possible? (Google Maps is not listing any option at all on Sundays during the next few weeks, and while Google doesn't have March schedule info yet, I assume March is no better than October.) Hoping this is a glitch or missing info since there are so many options for other days of the week.
My mom took this picture of a train at a museum in Maryland today -- is it a rail company logo?
For my new job, I collect attendees at the hotel and bring them to the office, then bring them back at the end of the day. I do this every month for a week - in total, 4-5 hours on the road. So far I've been playing Andy Fink's Corporate Report cd, but I would like some more variety. Please recommend equally particular albums that would go in the background of a jovial van ride. Maybe some instrumental 70s rock, or a really solid dub album?
Currently, I am living with my mom in Giles County, VA, about 15 minutes outside of Blacksburg (home to Virginia Tech). I'm unable to get a license right now, and there is no public transportation here at all (until Blacksburg). I need to figure out how to get to Blacksburg more often, but that's proving hard to do. Details within. [more inside]
I have never traveled outside the U.S. and am terrified about this specific part of the trip. I anticipate being at least a little jet lagged when I arrive, so I want to make sure I have a plan in place. Advice?

I've been reading articles about backlash towards high-speed rail in American cities, and it confounds me because I enjoy rail systems in Europe and Asia. Some people have said it logistically doesn't make sense in America, and I want to why that is. [more inside]

I have a meeting super early on Monday morning in Washington, so I'm going to fly in on Sunday afternoon and get some time with family in Poolesville, MD. Trying to track down some information for work. The UHaul et cetera sites give very cursory information on the inside dimensions of their trucks, but nothing on overall sizes, wheel base, et cetera. Anyone know where I can track this info down? I'm planning on emailing the various companies but am not super-hopeful on that and looking for alternative sources as well.

I'm in Berkeley right now (near the Ashby BART station) and am headed down to Menlo Park this afternoon/early evening (today, Friday). It looks like there are two ways I can go: through San Francisco via rail the whole way, or along the East Bay via rail and then via bus across the Dumbarton Bridge. What's the easiest and/or quickest way? [more inside]
I've spent the last seven years as (practically, if not in title) a well compensated secretary in a consulting company in the transportation/industrial sector. Attempts to move our company or my own work in a direction where I can grow have met with "That's too complicated", and two years of reaching out to contacts has essentially yielded "Man, I'd really love to have you, but don't have a position" ... how do I move on to a place that does/makes/moves things? For our upcoming March nuptials in Philadelphia the fiancée and I are planning to take photos before the ceremony with just the two of us and the photographer. We have no wedding party and plan to take family photos at the venue. For the 2+ hours we wanted to take photos as a couple at some spots around the city but we're wondering about transportation options - can we use uber to avoid hiring a sedan or other driver? Will an uber driver wait for us as we make multiple stops? Will a 2ish hour commitment be possible for an uber driver And if yes, will it be cost effective?
Going to HK on Wednesday, and wondering how much getting around is affected by the situation in Central. More specifically, getting from the airport to hotel in Shatin, and getting from the hotel to City University (Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre). Is there anything to be concerned about / that I should know before setting off? Many thanks.
In November, other people will make a decision which will determine whether they want to appear at an event. Then, I need to use a crowdfunding site to raise the money from their fans. I'm looking at a site that shows cheap rates, which I know will rise. The crowdfunding deadline will be two months after I start the campaign. Assuming this all works out, when should the 2-month crowdfunding begin? [more inside]

For upcoming international travel I booked a flight out of Newark for the lower cost. I anticipated having a ride but am now forced to deal with transportation to/from the airport. I'll be gone for just over two weeks and will leave and arrive back during normal business hours on weekdays. I live in Montgomery County PA and am looking for transportation options to Newark Airport. Some options include: - Suburban rail to center city Philadelphia, Amtrak to Newark - Suburban rail to trenton, train to Newark/bus to airport - driving - hiring a car service - shuttle So far it seems like all the public transit options are pretty cheap but a pain from where I live and given that I'll have luggage. Hiring a car service would be easiest but most expensive. I liked the option of the SuperTrans shuttle which could either pick me up at home or at a nearby hotel, but have read terrible yelp reviews on them. Anyone have experience getting to/from Newark that could be helpful here?

One of my coworkers said that the PATH will shut down if the snow accumulates past the height of the 3rd rail. But the line is underground (except outside where there are wires above head-height handling the charge) - could that actually happen. Has the PATH ever been shut down due to snow accumulation before?

A friend and I run a small-but-growing online vintage clothing business. We've recently branched out into showing at vintage truck shows in the Chicago area. As of now, we've been using a friend's Saab hatchback. Unfortunately, this isn't a really a sustainable option for us; it's also a bit of a tight fit for our 200ish garments, 2 - 3 clothing racks, bust, and table. We're interesting in purchasing a used vehicle so that we can continue to travel with our merchandise. Ideally, we'd like something that is reliable, safe, and has some extra space to grow alongside our business. Unfortunately, our budget is on the low side: we'd like to spend less than $5000... the cheaper the better. Thoughts? Recommendations? Should we rent instead of buy? Thanks for sharing your wisdom! I'm going to Korea for the first time. It'll be a very short trip because I'm just attending/presenting at a conference at Yonsei University. Have you had an immobilizer-equipped car stolen? By immobilizer, I mean the cars (typically post-2006) that have a ROM chip in the key which is required for authentication to start the engine. If so, how was it stolen? If you have such a car, has someone attempted to steal it and failed due to the factory-equipped immobilizer?
Can you help me solve my rapidly deteriorating transportation situation? I am a car dependent person who hates everything about cars, and my relatively beloved 1985 Mercedes 300 seems to have finally had it. In spite of the child's voice in my head screaming I DON'T WANT TO, I need to figure out how I'm going to get myself to and from work...maybe too many details below! Personal experience with car lease takeovers as well as general life advice about solving this problem like a grown up especially welcome! [more inside]
