I was one of the 6,000 unlucky souls to download the KeRanger ransomware virus for Mac. It seems that I caught it after it started to encrypt my files, but before it encrypted all of them. Am I still at risk? Next steps? [more inside]
Hi, recently my 2002 Ford Escort (automatic) has been revving up to 3-4 RPM while I'm driving, and is not very responsive to me stepping on the gas. This is most evident when I'm stuck behind drivers who are constantly slowing down/speeding up, or when I've stopped moving after coming to a complete stop (i.e.: stop lights). Since I've had the car, it's also shook when stopped, but it's never done this until the last several weeks (and has gotten worse today). [more inside]
I had my transmission diagnosed as needing a rebuild and they quoted about $2800 in the northern Virginia area. The shop is well reviewed and recommended by another shop that I trust so I'm not concerned that I'm being scammed, but I'm having trouble weighing out whether I should just start looking at a new to me car or if we should have the transmission rebuilt. I have a 2000 Toyota Camry V6 5 speed. It was not treated well and I have spent at least $2K over its sale price of $7K since buying it in 2011. I bought it with 117K miles and now it has 140K. I've had to fix an oxygen sensor, the ball joints and battery wiring along with replacing tires. But I think I am running out of problems to fix. Plus, it's loaded and comes with the power, comfort and style I like. [more inside]
Transmission is not running right for the freeway. It will be OK then after stopping a few times, the ignition needs to be turned off and back on then it will be OK for a short time. Is this a mechanical problem with the transmission or can something else be causing this?
2011 Kia Sedona will sometimes have this funky problem wherein there is a significant loss of power. That is, I can floor the gas pedal and it's pretty unresponsive. Oddly, the digital instrument panel indicator that usually shows what gear it is in (or D for drive) doesn't show anything at all for the gear (the panel is otherwise lit up normally) when this problem is present. Let's say I need to send some personal data (e.g., full name, DOB, SSN, address history, etc.). I already know I should never transmit that information via email, but why? What are the risks, and where and when do they occur? At what point(s) during transmission is the info in that email in danger? Hit me with every worse-case scenario you can think of. [more inside]
I would like Transmission, my OS X BitTorrent client, to only download and upload torrents when I'm on my home Wi-Fi network, and to stop all activity automatically when I'm not on this network. How can I achieve this? I'm open to using different software if need be.
Details aren't necessary except for sometimes when I have to sort clothes to be cleaned, I run into other people's garments that are soiled in some way. What's the likelihood that I am going to pick up anything unwanted as far as blood/fluid borne disease or any other nasties? My hands do not have any obvious sores or anything like that. This doesn't happen often and I thought I would ask here before I get too obsessive with my hand washing or badgering my doctor. Yes, I realize you may not be a doctor. Thanks in advance.
I'm having trouble figuring out if I can use a tow dolly to tow my car halfway across the country, or if doing so would destroy the transmission. [more inside]
Thinking of buying a 2013 Ford Focus Automatic. Big Manufacturer incentives right now. My one concern: lots of reports on car forums about transmission "shudder" that Ford appears to have blamed on programming alone for the last 2 years, but many owners say the reprogramming didn't solve things. I cant tell for sure that the most recent cars coming off the line are affected. Seems hard to get reliable information. Thoughts?
Is it my transmission, my clutch, or something else? Shifting into 2nd gear from 1st, constant acceleration (gas pedal) but the car stutters (surges forward, almost stalls, surges forward, almost stalls with concomitant spiking of RPM). [more inside]
Someone I was in contact with on Christmas has just been diagnosed with shingles. There was skin to skin contact, although I didn't notice any sores (but I wasn't looking for them). I'm concerned that I could transmit the virus to others - particularly some young children, elderly, and otherwise immunocompromised people I would be seeing at another family gathering tomorrow. Should I quarantine myself for a bit? [more inside]

My 2001 Saturn's transmission celluloid has gone out. It can be reached through the oil pan so it's fairly accessible as transmission repairs go. What's a reasonable price to expect for this repair? I'm just looking for a ballpark so I might know if I'm getting hosed in the estimate when I get it next week.
My 2002 Mazda Tribute is having transmission problems and I'm stumped about what to do next. Can you help? (My apologies for the length, I was trying to include all pertinent and potentially pertinent information). [more inside]

Our wagon has a quirky automatic transmission—the same problem with little change for six years: Sometimes it won’t shift into drive, but it will always always engage in reverse. The go-to fix? Drive backward to a slope that enables a rolling start forward, shift into drive and tap-tap the gas until, eventually, *clunk* it engages. Diagnosis? [more inside]

My pickup is a 2000 Toyota Tacoma V6 4X4 with an annoying problem of popping out of first gear both under load and when not under load. This is apparently a known issue with Tacomas as documented here. I've replaced the bushings per the linked article except for the white one on the end of the shift lever visible in the second photo of step four. This part is on order but I'm not optimistic. What are my options? [more inside]
If an alien located on a planet 100 light years from here was to switch on a big, multi-frequency radio receiver, and record all the noises coming from outer space for the next hundred years, on all frequencies, how many soap operas, advertisements and new broadcasts would they pick up from Earth? Would a mass-market radio, similar to our Earthly equivalents, pick up anything? Over time, as the number of Earth transmissions increases exponentially, would the alien pick up a cacophony or a damp fizzle? [more inside]
The automatic transmission on my 2001 VR2 Volkswagen Jetta has failed twice. The first time was at 40,000 miles, it was covered under the 10 year/100k powertrain warranty (but barely) and now I am 6 months out of the time period but the car only has 64,000 miles on it and has been impeccably maintained and gently used. How can I get the dealer to cover this under warranty? [more inside]

I have a 2004 Hyundai Tiburon GT V6 Special Edition (http://autos.yahoo.com/2004_hyundai_tiburon_gt_v6_special_edition/) with 53k miles. Recently I noticed an odd sound when I press the clutch pedal. The best way to describe the sound is that it's very much like the rushing air sound you hear when a window is opened. The sound does vary just a bit in pitch depending on how far the clutch is pressed, and the sound stops when the clutch pedal is let back out. I'd swear it sounds like a hole being opened and closed. The sound is very subtle and can't be heard when the radio is up, so I don't know how long it's been there. I first noticed it several months ago and it hasn't changed since then, neither getting worse nor better. As best as I can determine, the sound is coming from the area underneath the pedal. The transmission seems to be working perfectly and I don't abuse the clutch in any way. Someone suggested that it could be the throwout bearing, but I've watched clips of that sound on-line and it doesn't quite match what I'm hearing. Any ideas or suggestions?

My 2001 VW Golf (1.6l manual) was caught in flash flooding on Friday. The car stalled in water that came up to a couple of inches past the level of the bottom of the doors. The car was in the water for about 15 minutes before some local residents helped me push the car out of the water. Luckily, the car started and I drove home. The next day I found it was (intermittently) difficult to change gears. Is it possible that water could have got into the transmission or some other part of the car effecting the transmission? Or is this just a coincidence and the well know problem with the Mk4 transmission has happened? Any advice is appreciated.
Would you buy this used Toyota Corolla? I've got a line on a 1997 Corolla with 150k on the engine, but the transmission was replaced five years ago (after dying at 125k) with a used transmission from JapanDirect. That transmission now has ~75k on it, in addition to whatever it had before it was installed. I'm having my mechanic look at the car this week, but have no idea if any of this is a warning sign. Is JapanDirect reliable, in your experience? Would you buy a used car with a replacement transmission?

I am far from home and my truck is acting up. The speedometer has started flailing around wildly and every so often we'll feel the kick of the transmission (automatic) shifting or falling out of and into gear. I think the problem is electronic as every so often the speedometer starts behaving normally and the transmission settles down and behaves normally. [more inside]
