How can I as a new runner start slow when I feel like I have a running start?

I need an introduction to practical cataloging, as opposed to the very theoretical stuff we covered in library school. I have recently started a job as a public library cataloger, I guess on the strength of my interest and local ties, as I have zero experience. So, what books/online tutorials would you recommend to a brand-new cataloger, who took her last cataloging class in 2003? [more inside]

Or do I just need to knead my knee?

I just got into road cycling this year. I bought a bike in February, and have been ramping up in miles and pace since then. I just did a metric century (actually ~67 miles) a few weeks ago, my longest ride yet, and it killed my left knee. With this in mind, how do I keep up my progress in the off-season and return harder better faster stronger? What else can I do to move up a division for next year? Help me help my dog

I was just sitting outside on my friend's lawn with my dog, who was tied to a tree branch about 20 feet away (that I checked for strength before tying her up) and quietly watching squirrels. How to pick up my marathon training after 2 weeks of not running?

I'm training for a marathon that is taking place in just over 5 weeks. I haven't been able to run for 2 weeks due to illness and injuries. I took a week off to nurse some hip bursitis and then I came down with a flu like bug. The longest training run I've done so far has been 14 miles, and that was two weeks ago. This weekend, I am supposed to do 18 miles. To you runners out there - what do you think the best way is for me to get back on track and finish the race successfully over the next 5 weeks? My pace is around 11 minutes/mile.

Good dog or bad dog? I think know that it's good to praise a dog for the behavior you want (good dog) and scold it for behavior you don't want (bad dog!). Help me with this please dog-whisperers ... NewDogOwnerFilter: Is it worth the fight?

I adopted an awesome dog from the local Humane Society. The dog is a one year old German Shepherd who is very well behaved (doesn't chew, rarely barks, never steals even when freshly cooked cheeseburgers are left unattended, etc) and already knows basic commands like "sit" and "come" and "heel." The only problem is the "heel" - he was obviously trained to heel to the left and I really want him to heel to my right. The question: is it worth the effort to retrain him and if so how do I accomplish this? More details and some photos below the fold. [more inside]
