I've been running since 2007, and since then I've run three half marathons and several 10 milers/10k/5ks and what have you. Over the years my speed and abilities have increased, but boredom has set in and my motivation is lacking, especially when it comes to long distance running. I think I want to transition to doing short distances and speedwork, but I'm not sure what I should focus on.

Hello.
I am signed up to run the Manchester 10 k on 26 May. I have never run any kind of race in my life before, and am REALLY „not sporty“ though I am used to hiking/cycling.
I have not, to put it mildly, trained as much as I should. By now I can jog for 2.5 – 3 km in half an hour, and have mostly „trained“ on the treadmill rather than outdoors (I strained a muscle running outdoors and feel like it’s my muscles and joints that are most struggling with the running rather than anything „cardio“ related as such. So my actual question: is it still possible to get myself into a condition where I can get round the route without walking it and without injuring myself (too badly) in the remaining time?

My dog is very active. I like to jog long distances. When we run on the lead he pulls and gets distracted by wildlife. Is there a better lead solution? Personal electric fence? How can I get him to run by my side? Must he be condemned to a mostly sedentary lifestyle? He is a Pointer.

Okay, so when I turned 40 last year I wasn't super-psyched about the direction my body was going. I started exercising a bit, and this year decided to set a goal. I decided to do this stupid "
Warrior Dash" thing. Possibly because it looked more fun than a standard race, possibly because I'm an idiot.

I'm looking for a beginner running program that's geared to someone with good initial fitness and isn't quite as beginner as Couch-to-5k. Any recommendations of a good program or any experiences you have to share?

I'm new to running, but am already very fit and active (cardio workouts 5-7 times a week.) New runners are warned to take it slowly and not push themselves, but how does this apply to someone who's not coming off a couch towards a goal of 5k?

I'm training for a marathon that is taking place in just over 5 weeks. I haven't been able to run for 2 weeks due to illness and injuries. I took a week off to nurse some hip bursitis and then I came down with a flu like bug. The longest training run I've done so far has been 14 miles, and that was two weeks ago. This weekend, I am supposed to do 18 miles. To you runners out there - what do you think the best way is for me to get back on track and finish the race successfully over the next 5 weeks? My pace is around 11 minutes/mile.

Light smoking, nicotine gum, and marathon training: I smoke 3 cigarettes a day, and am very set in this habit so it's hard to cut back. I'm training for a marathon that is soon. I want to use nicotine gum to cut back on my cigarette smoking ahead of the race. Is it okay to combine the gum + cigarettes at very low doses? What else should I know?

I know you are not my doctors and we will be visiting Dr M. The Doctor Who Runs, but in the meantime, any suggestions/experience would be most welcome.
Mr LyzzyBee wanted to start a running programme with me. As he was doing 3 mile walks once or twice a day for a total of 3 or 4 a week, and an hour on a Sunday on the cross-trainer/rower/bike combo, we started a bit more than a "couch to 5k"
We did the below training. He complained of running out of steam on the Sunday, and today he got shin pains. On the OUTSIDE not the inside of the shin bone, and he got a little lump by each shin bone (yuck) as he ran. Stopped as soon as (I noticed) he was in pain.
Running quite slowly, we're averaging 4.9-5 mph. I have a feeling I've pushed him too hard. What do you guys and gals think?

With a large amount of time per day (say capped at 4 or 5 hours), what improvement could you expect to see over 6 months in running 800/1500m, starting with somewhere between a 4:45 & 5 minute mile? What would the workouts look like?
