I reply to a fair number of L.A. travel questions here and many of the answers (including mine) often contain dire warnings about traffic. This happens even if traffic isn't directly related to the question being asked.
So, visitors to our fair city, how bad was the traffic
really, and what information/advice can I give to newbie LA tourists who drive?

Every weekday my commute is either easy -- because there are almost no big trucks on the road -- or terrible -- because the freeway is packed with a solid line of big trucks. Why is it like that? What do I not understand about shipping, trucking and/or logistics that makes this such an either/or proposition?

I need to be in Beverly Hills by 9AM tomorrow morning. I'm in San Diego North County. I have two basic options: Either take the I-5 N all the way or take the I-15 N and then go west towards Beverly Hills. I am assuming that taking the I-15, even though it's the longer route, will get me there faster during rush hour, because I'll avoid Orange County, South LA and all that mess. Am I right?

When did Los Angeles drivers begin to consistently make illegal left turns, against a red light? In LA last week, my wife and I noticed that the last two or three cars making a left turn at an intersection did so even though the green arrow had stopped showing. And are there other places besides Southern California where these (belated, illegal, dangerous) turns happen regularly? [A bit more inside]
