A person with a California driver's license gets a speeding ticket while driving through West Virginia. The speed alleged on the ticket was 15 miles over the posted limit. What would be the insurance consequences if the driver simply paid off the ticket without contesting it? How could the driver find out more information about whether s/he should contest the ticket, or plead guilty to a lower speed? In what state should the person be looking for a lawyer to best answer her/his questions? What should be this person's next step?
Also, would the answers be different if the alleged speed was 10 (or 9, or 5, or whatever) miles over the posted limit?

My friend was riding his bike through Brooklyn early Sat morning. Streets were quiet and he was not stopping at all the red lights, just slowing & crossing the (mostly) vacant intersections.
Unbeknownst to him there was a cop in a patrol car following him about 1/2 a block back. After multiple blocks the cop finally pulled him over and issued separate tickets for every red light, totally about $800 worth.
Although there is no dispute that he went through the lights, this was a very dick-ish move. How to protest in court? [more inside]

Afternoon commute: Headed out of town, you drive WITH traffic -- and it sux.
But if you were driving toward town, from the burbs, you'd be driving AGAINST traffic. And that's a breeze. See the paradox? [more inside]

So I've just moved to LA (awesome) and am thinking of getting a motorcycle as my primary mode of transport. Thing is, when I mention this to my friends (most of which aren't licensed to ride a motorcycle), I get incredulous looks and/or stern warnings as to how silly and dangerous a proposition this is. [Asking for a friend]
My family and I are moving to a new bigish city in the non-California west. There is a house that is essentially my dream house, for what I think is a very good price. It's been on the market for a bit, probably because the property borders a fairly major thoroughfair. How big of a problem is this? Should I just run away?

I have seen many controlled intersections that have one (or more) left turn lanes with one (or more) straight-through lanes with separate signals for the left turn lane(s) versus the straight lane(s). In general, those intersections are designed to have straight-through traffic going from two opposing directions and then alternate with left-turning traffic going from two opposing directions. When the straight-through traffic is passing, why do the left-turning lanes get a red circular light rather than a green circular light or a yellow circular light? [more inside]

Even with the ringer set on maximum volume, I tend not to hear my phone ringing when I'm out walking on a busy London street. I'd like a ringtone that will be audible over traffic noise, but not be earsplitting or annoying when I'm indoors. Are there any acoustic properties (other than sheer loudness) that I should look for in a ringtone to help it stand out against a background of car engines and other street noise?

Until very recently, I lived in a college town where having a car was completely unnecessary. Though I had my license, I rarely drove. I am now in a place where having a car isn't absolutely necessary, but more convenient. At my parents' behest, I also now have a car, which I'm very grateful for. However, there's such a mental block for me to drive said car that I haven't driven anywhere for over a week. Any suggestions to overcome this general avoidance of driving? [more inside]

From what she has said, the due date of the fine/court appearance is coming up in two days and seeing as her car is still in the shop, what options does she have? Plead not guilty in hopes of buying some time, and showing up with proof of correction? She's not sure if her car will be fixed and properly smogged in time on or before the due date. [more inside]

How bad is traffic in Dubai on Sundays in the afternoon/evening?
My wife and I have 24 hours in Dubai, beginning on a Sunday. We arrive to our hotel (right next to the airport) around 5:15PM, and we're taking the Bateaux dinner cruise leaving at 8:30PM. My plan between these two times is to take her to the Royal Mirage down by Jumeira for drinks.
Online, it's looking like a taxi will take roughly 40 minutes to cover the distance from the airport to Jumeira, assuming no traffic. But on a Sunday (which is a work day in Dubai, as I understand it?), I'm worried: will the roads be totally clogged at that time of day? Or will a taxi be able to get us there in a reasonable amount of time?
