What careers mainly involve buying low and selling high by knowing a market in great detail, in part by making contacts and in part by combing through reams of information - and how does a college student get an entry level job in them? NOT interested in entrepreneurial suggestions, or things that require much theory or advanced mathematics (no i-banking/hedge funds) - more emphasis on information-gathering and shrewdness. What reasonably solid jobs might there be and what's the entry path (recommended academic background, internships, etc.)?

Earlier this year, as part of my 401K, I sold some of my investment in my company's stock (total value ~$2000). NASD licenses (specifically series 7 & 63) requires company sponsorship to obtain. Once obtained, you need company sponsorship to maintain the licenses. Is there a company who will maintain your licenses for you while you are not working in the financial industry? Perhaps for a fee on top of the annual registration costs? I believe you have two years from separation with your employer to obtain a new sponsor.

Can your average person who spends their entire workday in front of a computer short the dollar online, through some sort of investing site? I'm macroeconomically literate, but know next to nothing about what sort of options are available for playing with my money. I read about day-trading Japanese moms making money on the currency trade, and I'd like to keep my relatively meager savings from vanishing into some Weimarish wheelbarrow-of-bills traffic jam, so...do I need to learn Japanese to do it?

Why can't you put numbers in a stock trading symbol? (Or can you?) For example, 3M is MMM, which works out, but it would have been easier for them to simply have 3M. (I tried to Google for the answer, but there are so many irrelevant hits.)

UKSharesFilter: Some of my relatives have had a small selection of the shares in an inherited portfolio disappear over time from their online tracker, so my question is what has happened to the following stocks: CHB.L; GAA.L; MFBUEUGI.L and MFBUTRU.L, and should they have received any notification, documents or even cheques, (and what can be done about finding out more)? (I should clarify that they still have the certificates and haven't sold, traded or otherwise physically disposed of them, it's the listing themselves that now come up as 'No Such Symbol' on the internet listing of the portfolio).

The UK based company I don't work for is not a fairly large online financial information provider. Understandably we receive no traffic at all from Google and other search engines for searches related to various company names. Recently I discovered that we catalogue all the search terms by which people reach our site and do a WHOIS search on their IP address using public WHOIS servers. We then search this information for things like "users from ms.com searching for takeover and at least one other word." Then we buy shares in whatever company people from ms.com are looking for along with takeovers. We have no relationship with any of the companies involved other than that we get to see their search terms. So far there is a definite correlation between these things, and we have made money. Could this qualify as insider trading? We are exploiting non publically available information that's for sure.

Opinions on the best online online brokerage out there right now? I want to buy some stocks and do a little trading for myself away from my retirement account which is handled by a professional. Hard to pick between the big boys (e-trade, scottrade, etc.) or maybe there's a better option I'm not aware of. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
