Where can I find a central hub of all the products and chemicals banned or being phased out by the European Union? Which particular countries are ahead of the EU? (e.g., banning even more instead of waiting for EU consensus, all in the interest of public health or due to inconclusive info about these kinds of products) Please provide links to detailed lists for those.

I rent a 50 year old ground level home that has NO pests! This in Hawaii where every home has loads of roaches, ants, etc etc. I have seen one roach in 2 1/2 years. and a neighborhood where they abound!
WE have used no pesticides in the past 2 1/2 years and
the house has not been tented in 5 years
I am worried that at some point in the past someone treated this place with something long acting and toxic: worried for my kids mostly.
Landlord says not to his knowledge. What tests could one reasonably do to see if toxins are a problem? Is this fear ridiculous?

Phthalates, VOCs, BPA in plastic and cans, the list goes on. I changed my habits in an attempt to avoid all those things. Now it's high amounts of BPA that rub off of sales receipts. Any advice that could help me chill out? I'm exhausted.

Since having a baby, I've been trying to pay more attention to the types of products we use and now I'm pretty sure that everything is killing us. How do I become better informed about hidden toxins and chemicals and other nasties and learn to eliminate them from my life
without going completely crazy and running off to the forest with my tinfoil hat?

Here's a
Talk of the Nation show that addresses the need, if it helps.

I live on the second floor of an old turn of the century mansion and the first floor party-hardy dwellers are serious chain smokers. Their noxious, secondhand smoke is so pervasive (they entertain smoker friends by the droves) that it seeps through my hardwood floors and walls and stinks up my apartment something awful. Sometimes it seems like I'm living above a nightclub it is so bad.

BeerFilter: I've been told by 3 separate bartenders that draught beer has formaldehyde in it, that's why they only drink from bottles. A Google search shows at best that there may be two reasons for formaldehyde being in beer. (1) Can manufacturing and (2) ethanol breakdown. Are either harmful enough to avoid draught beer?
