I'm looking for examples of small-to-medium sized U.S. cities and towns that are known for having exceedingly radical city governments (whether left- or right-wing). What have these governments done that makes them considered radical? What obstacles have they faced in attempting to implement their policies?
I am going to Paris for six days in early May (super-excited - I was just fondling my passport this morning) and am looking for suggestions for interesting things to see and do. [more inside]
We are looking for a small city without cold winters that has a large body of water - no inland towns for us- and is vibrant, cultured and intelligent. We have lived in LA, NY and Miami and are now in Durham, Nc - finding it too woodsy and land locked and way to hot in the summer here. We both work and are in our early sixties.
Birthday wish for my wife: Is it possible to get tickets to, or when does one need to show up to get into a NH Democratic Town hall when one is a Democrat in MA? [more inside]
Hi, I recently was offered a job on 1st Ave near Grand Central in NYC. I live in Maplewood, NJ which makes for a rather long commute so my wife and I have discussing the possibility of CT or Upstate NY. We really like the culture of Maplewood. It's very diverse and accepting. A lot of families move from Brooklyn and it has a very artsy culture. I was wondering if anyone knows of towns in the NY or CT that have a similar feel?
After living the nomadic life for many years, I'm starting to think about settling down again. Search criteria inside. [more inside]

What novels or movies have a vivacious, charming person drop in and change everybody's perspective or shake the place up?
So next week, my girlfriend and I are going on a cruise for our third year anniversary booked through Royal Caribbean that leaves from Florida and stops at Labidee, Haiti; Falmouth, Jamaica; George Town, Grand Cayman; and Cozumel, Mexico. This is my first cruise, and my girlfriend’s eighth cruise. We have already booked awesome excursions in Labadee (parasailing!), George Town (turtle farm and stingray city!), and Cozumel (snorkeling boat tour!), but we are unsure what to do in Falmouth since it’s a relatively new port. Does anyone know the history of mining towns and/or horse ranching in the Rocky Mountains, or where to go to research it? [more inside]
My colleagues in New Jersey often refer to places as "the next town over" or "two towns down from me." I get the general idea, but as life-long Southern Californian, I feel like I'm not getting the full, nuanced meaning. [more inside]

Mrs Primate, the Messrs Primates Junior and I may be moving back to the Netherlands in the near future. I'm looking for recommendations of small towns or neighborhoods in larger cities to check out. We're know A'dam inside and out and are pretty familiar with Utrecht and Haarlem, but we haven't actually lived in the country since 1999 (although we visit twice a year), so.... [more inside]
Can you help with identifying this mystery print? It shows a 'futuristic' town, with bubbly/jet-like cars and trains going past a mall. I saw this print at the Philly City Archives. They think that it might be set in Lawnview, in northeast Philadelphia, but they don't know, and there are a number of other Lawnviews in the US, e.g. in Dallas. [more inside]

My family is considering moving to Oregon (or conceivably Washington) in a couple of years, and we are going to visit soon. I'd like to collect suggestions of possible locations so we can try to visit. We would like a cheap, small town with a liberal climate along the Washington/Oregon border or moderately near the coast. Is this possible? [more inside]

I start a new job next week at a local newspaper in the production end of ad sales...ie. design. This will be the first time I've worked in three years. I dumbed down my resume a lot to get the job, which I really want. It's in a small town, which I moved to three years ago and the paper publishes twice a week....small town....really small town. I used to work at a high profile 24 hour Cable News Network located in Atlanta, GA, which shall remain nameless, wink. wink, in a very stressful, high responsibility position... [more inside]
