Things to do in Paris in May

I'm going to be in Paris next week. I'll be alone for three days, and with a friend and her 2 year old daughter for four days. I'd like suggestions for the non-obvious things to do, for restaurants and cafes to go to (by myself and with my friend), for nightlife (there will be a babysitter at night), for places to shop, and for restaurants and activities that adults can enjoy that will be acceptable to a two year old. Road trip from Kansas City to Houston - activity suggestions

My boyfriend and I are making a road trip from Kansas City to Houston, TX, in mid-May. We like to explore small towns, eat at local diners, take tours, etc. What are your recommendations? We'll take either I-45 or I-35, and probably use some side-roads.

No True Scotsman punches an American in the face.

A few years back, my friend Russell (mid-twenties, American, white, male) was in Scotland, at a bus stop. It was late at night, he'd been drinking, and some guy (mid-twenties, British, white, male) came up and angrily asked him "Are you of Scottish descent?" Russell raised his hands and eyebrows in a confused "Whoa, no idea what you're on about" gesture and said, "Buddy, you got the wrong guy." The man then punched Russell in the face. WHY? [more inside]

Three Months in Birmingham

On Friday I'm going to Birmingham (Sutton Coldfield) for three months (until early may) for an engineering internship. What should I know? What's the Birmingham area known for amongst Britons? What should I absolutely not miss in my down time? What social norms (at work or otherwise) might be unusual to me? What do locals do for fun? What parts of the city should I wander around in to get a sense of the place (and in which areas would doing so get me killed or served with an anti-social order)? [more inside]

Trip Planning for late Summer

Trying to figure out the prefect trip for late July. So far my top two choices are Upstate New York and Montana. I'm not set on either but we have family in Milton and Cold Spring NY and I have heard that Montana is nice in the summer. I'd love any and all suggestions. We are in Texas so we are looking for a cool climate break (70s or 80s are ideal). Also we will have our 5 month old with us. [more inside]

Help me figure out an urban adventure in Saigon!

Help me have an urban adventure in Saigon / Ho Chi Minh City. I'm traveling there by myself, early 20s guy, and reasonably street smart for Asia (I currently live in southern China). I speak fluent English and advanced Mandarin but no Vietnamese. An ex-girlfriend's family lives outside of Saigon and she's got some young cousins who'll be willing to help show me around if I've got some cash to spare. The area where I live in Guilin already has beautiful scenery, I love urban areas, and I really have little interest in getting out to the countryside, except maybe for a one-day excursion. Thanks for your help in advance, everyone! :) [more inside]

How do I start taking commercial photographs?

I've been taking photographs for a few years with the aim of becoming a professional, and I think I've got enough experience and material to start billing myself as one (published work, fancy website, etc). I'm working towards photojournalism, but in the meantime I'd like to do some travel or commercial-type photography for the extra cash. I'm not really sure how to kick that off, though. I'm living in a huge tourist city in Asia and I suspect fancy hotels are a good place to start, but where else should I be putting out my feelers? [more inside]

Escaped from Greenock Prison

Browsing today's newspapers here in Scotland it would seem that there is an anti-Scottish feeling pervading the whole of the USA after the compassionate release of the Pan-Am bomber last week. Question1: Am I right in thinking that this is the case, or is it just right wing neo-con nonsense eminating from the Fox News stable? Question2: If this anti-Scottish feeling does exist, how best can I explain that we the UK/US public have been sold a lie by our Governments and that this guy was merely a patsy? [more inside]
