I don't understand leasing and renting in Toronto [great deals and spectacular lake-front views inside].

Beyond renting videos, long walks on the beach, and hot pig sex... What are your favourite things to do on a date? I'd like some creative suggestions for fun, date-appropriate activities, especially ideas that are low-budget or free, and geared to the early stages when one (or two) hasn't quite gotten to the hot pig sex yet. Toronto-centric ideas will be most welcome, since that's where I am.

Going to Toronto next weekend for the first time, for three days and staying at the Canadiana Backpackers Hostel in downtown Toronto. We are three college students - can anyone recommend free/cheap things to do and explore? We'd prefer to avoid touristy spots, have a high interest in walking everywhere, exploring ethnic neighborhoods (where'd the best place for good, authentic dim sum in Toronto?)

Torontonians: Where can you rent art films on VHS these days? Generally Bay St. Video covers all my rental needs, but they only rent DVDs now, which is great for movies that are available on DVD, but less great for those that aren't. (+)

I'm in Toronto, currently just northeast of Queen's Park Crescent. Why have there been trucks blowing their horns outside my window for the past two hours?

If I am going to Toronto for a weekend, with three people, what is the best and cheapest option for parking for three days? If I'm correct, i can't park there overnight, even in a residential neighborhood. is there a train station i can park in overnight and take a train in? or would just shelling out for three nights ofparking be the best idea?

I'm moving from Tokyo to Toronto in a few weeks, and I have about 100 books (many of them hardcover) that I'd like to bring home. I can't really take all of these with me, since when boxed they're almost impossible to lift. Anyone have a suggestion on a cheap way of getting them home?

Suppose, hypothetically, that I were considering a move to Toronto, Ontario. I've never been there. Can someone give a quick rundown of the city and its neighborhoods? Where should a 30-something single professional from the Boston suburbs look for a nice two-bedroom condo?

Selecting things to see at the
Toronto Film Fest.
Here's a list of films playing at TIFF. International MeFites and film nuts: have you seen/heard anything about any of them/the directors? What should a TIFF-goer see or avoid? If you're going to the Fest, what are you seeing? Got extra tickets you want to sell? Looking for ones to buy? Lets use the thread to maximize the event. {more}

I want to start doing some volunteer work. Can anyone give me some suggestions as to organizations or causes? My preferences are that it’s something in Toronto, that it’s political or sociological in nature, that it’s project-oriented rather than long-term, and that it involves meeting lots of people.

Collected or filtered local culture/happenings... I know about upcoming.org. I'm wondering if there are other sites where people can find collected listings of events in their area. Basically I'm sick of missing concerts in my city (Toronto) because I forget to check the papers regularly. (I'm also interested in non-Toronto-specific sites.)

Looking for a job in Toronto. Specifically, it would be a job working with kids in some capacity, including social work, sports, education, whatever, but not a volunteer job, more of a career type job. Failing that, any kind of social work or advocacy would be good too. The question is, does anyone have experience looking (and hopefully finding) that sort of work? Regular job hunting sources have not been much use. Please help! And look inside!

Two-part question about buying a bike. Part the first: I want to get a good quality road or hybrid bike. What's your recommendation for brand and/or model to check out and/or avoid? B) If you're in Toronto, where do you recommend shopping? My price range is C$600-1000 (about max of us$750). If you're not in Toronto, is there an online shop you can recommend for buying and having a bike shipped here? Main purpose of the bike is exercise and will almost exclusively be ridden on city streets. [more]
